Damn - sorry to hear about that Jake. That car has certainly tested your patience. Whats the plan from here?

That *may* be easier to repair than you think.

It looks to me like the driveshaft bolts have come loose, effectively seperating the inner CV joint from the gearbox output flange.

I'm not sure how good your mechanical knowledge is but I think if you get the driveshaft off you'll be able to see the problem for definite. You may get away with 6 new driveshaft bolts and nothing else, especially if none of the bolts have sheared inside the output flange. However, even if they have sheared/snapped you may still be able to remove them easily enough. The flange may be damaged from separation as its unlikely to have been clean but you never know, it might have survived intact.

If the worse has happened and the flange is damaged or the bolts have sheared/snapped and you aren't able to get them out then all you'll need (at the most) is a new or replacement output flange (which just bolts to the diff), some decent gear oil to top up the gearbox after you've changed the flange, and 6 new bolts.

However it does look like the driveshaft bolts weren't correctly torqued up when the driveshaft was fitted, sorry to say that.

Either way with a bit of effort you could have it running again for Sunday, good luck :)

Tom

Tested my patience is an understatement. Luckily Im day off tomorrow so going to have a look and see if I can see what is going on in there. Find out if the damage is at the drive shaft end or the gear box end and take it from there really

You need to get on the phone to the breakdown company and find out exactly what you're paying for if they won't take your car to a garage when it's broken. I thought that was what a breakdown company DID FFS.. who are you with Jake?

this is what happend to the previous owner of my mk3 vr6 daily, the drive shaft bolts had come loose and sheered off, he thought he blew the gearbox :) i only got it for £250.00 because of that, cost me £5.00 to fix :)

mk3bentdsbolts.jpg

it was a fairly easy fix, even getting the sheered studs out was easy,

Lets hope its that simple to fix mate

Sorry to hear L504's being a b*tch mate. It gave me a hard time when I had it and it's still p*ssing you off! Hopefully it'll get through it's midlife crisis soon lol.

Breakdown cover is flippin shocking mate. I've got mine through my insurance company and have had AA in the past and have never heard of paying recovery fees. It's bullsh*t. It's as if theyre charging you for their directory services. You could have probably had it towed cheaper if you just called a random local company.

Thanks guys. Just getting to the point now where Im tempted to just fix it and sell it and get something newer :?

Been looking at Bora's for a while now! was mainly looking at TDI's for a daily hack but done a random quote on a 1.8T and got a quote for the same Im paying on the rado.

I think I just need one more nail in the coffin to push me to it

mate, that doesnt look like the end of the world at all, hopefully tomorrow it'll all be sorted.

i totally understand the desire for a new car, but this is just as likely to happen on a bora.

get it dealt with, enjoy it again and if once it's all good you feel the same look at your options. personally i think youre so far into this its just a minor setback.

Thats the only thing stopping me at the mo, car owes me too much to just give it up. I know in a few months time I can afford to get a Bora TDI as a daily/side project. Which I think I need to take my mind off of the rado for a bit.

Just depressing when I think I've had the car for 14 months and its been broken for at least 8 months of those!

Hi jake i have a spare brand new flange for a vr gear box its the earlier type with a circlip on the end later ones (94 onwards???) are tightned with a bolt me thinks, was the last one in stock in Germany bought it but ended up getting a 2nd hand gear box instead. The flange alone cost me £130 but is just sat around so really not needed and could do with getting rid. drop me a pm and we can sort something out.

Well the car is now fixed

Big thanks to Graham for offering to come down and give me a hand fixing it (in others words I was stood there watching). Specially coming down so early on a Sunday.

Put another drive shaft on with new CV joints too just be on the safe side. After we (he) got it off we found what caused the problem. Looks like the CV joint had disintegrated/exploded as the casing was broken into peaces and all the ball bearings were missing, which caused the bolts to de-thread the flange. As all ways the car does a "proper job" of destroying itself!

Im sure there should be bearings in there  :camp:

Going to spend the day putting the new wheels on and putting the interior back in, so lets try again for next Sunday now.

I think we have made up after are little falling out earlier on in the week I think things have been made up now.

Put 90% of the inside back in just waiting on the Porsche seats and a few bits of trim which are going in on Thursday. Also put my new wheels on and I think they work rather well on the car :afro:

To top things off, the Metro is playing up now. It sprung a big fuel leak of all things today at work (why fuel too expensive) so that is at the garage over the road from work waiting for the verdict.

Just waiting on the 3rd thing to go wrong now
