People who went rear 280s using the original calliper reported little difference in practice (I went from 288s to 312s on my daily golf and can't really tell the difference tbh)? As you're going to fab a bracket why not try to use a calliper with a larger pad to suit the larger swept area of the 256mm disk?

 

Not having a go BTW, it great reading posts from people with the skills to do this stuff :)

Understand what you are saying Dox, constructive comments are always welcome. I changed the brakes on my last mk5 from 288 to 312 and like you didnt really notice a difference and for a mad moment I looked at the discs I took of my R to go on the Corrado, 345 front and 280 rear :)

 

As far as I can tell, the rears dont really do alot anyway due to the restricter so more than standard is a bit wasted, this is more for show really so they dont get lost behind the 17" RC's. I decided to go for the solid disk although maybe a vented would have looked a better disk, but the caliper from a mk4 that fits a solid also looks better with the fins IMO. It did cross my mind to mod the mk4 caliper to fit a vented disk but that didn't seem very safe and I quite like living at the moment :)

Looking great! How has the paint come up? I am debating on cellulose or 2k paint when I get to mine, has your paint hardened well? My father sprayed his 1930's ford with 2k and it seems quite soft, scratches easily?

 

The brake idea is good, what's stopped you going 5 stud out of interest? (For the greater array of oem/aftermarket brake upgrades etc)

 

Hi Pat, paint seems to be quite hard, I used 2k and it is taking some time to flat (more caused by my spraying skills (or lack of) but when flat it comes up with a good shine :)

 

I decided to stay with the 4 stud because I have a set of 4 stud BBS RCs on it which I am happy with for now

rado20vT Glad you found it useful mate, also if using solid discs the Polo 6N2 (I used 9N) stub axles have cast in lugs to mount your caliper carriers to, not tried it myself but considered it before going with vented discs. The link below shows what I mean, it all lines up but may need tweaking to accommodate a larger disk.

Not much done on the rado yesterday but I took my R to a rolling road day

 

316 on a stage 1 map so was quite happy with that :)

along with some mods to the Audi TT seat basses to lower them down a bit more

What mods did you do to the Audi TT seat bases to make them sit lower ?

Ah, probably a bit misleading there, the rear is bolted to a bar with runners on each end that slot into the original seat runners, but it was sitting a bit high, (the guy I bought them off was a bit shorter than me) so I cut and lowered them a bit

Did you put enough hardner in when the paint was mixed? Should be a ratio of 2 parts paint 1 part hardner and 10% thinners.

Not much accomplished this weekend (F1 was on :) )

 

Still, the brakes are coming on, got the bracket designed, just need to get it cut out

 

 

 

Then because the 256mm solid disk is thicker than the corrado disk by 3mm I have to alter the caliper carrier a little

 

Standard carrier, a little tight on the disk

 

 

and the modified carrier, with the same gap as the standard disk

 

 

 

And finally, I cut out some protection pads for the tailgate

Had a day off today to get the daily MOT'd

 

The wife also went out for a few hours, so I thought while she's out, 'shall I spend my time watching porn or go work on the Rado'

 

So after an hour I got bored of porn and went to work on the Rado :)

 

Went back to the problem I was having a while back with fitting the climate control panel and after a bit of cutting I got this:

 

Old plastic around the heater controls removed

 

 

Some small mods to the rear of the climate panel

 

 

And its in

 

 

Radio still fits but the ash tray and lighter will need some further tidying up

 

 

And it still fixes in the dash with all the screws

 

 

 

In the end, not as much a problem as I thought it would be :)

Non Rado day today

 

Got some filing cabinets during the week so decided to use them to organise my garage

 

Started with 4 of these

 

cut 2 down to be 3 drawer

 

 

This was the state of my bench

 

 

And now with the cabinets

 

 

Of to dublogic tomorrow in the R but may get some time to work on the C on Monday :)

OK, back to the rear brake upgrade and brackets

 

Made a mock up (stupidly out of steel when I have perspex) and have realised a school boy error, I increased the distance to the bolt holes for the carrier out by 15mm radius but should have moved them in a straight line out so there is a gap between the edge of the disk and the carrier of 7mm meaning the pads would be in the wrong place and hanging off the edge of the disk.

 

Still you live and learn.

 

I do also need a 20mm spacer to fit the carrier to the new bracket but for this mock up and bit of copper pipe worked well

 

 

 

 

Only a couple of wasted hours :(

 

So I'll change the drawing and make another from perspex :)

Not been on it for a while so progress is slow, had a facebook mempiry come up the other day showing a picture of the rado when it was last on the road, that was 4 years ago, shocked

 

So today I routed the wires for the radio antenna, FM, DAB and power cables then looked at the roof lining. I had previously covered it in cream alcantara but that isnt what I want now, so stripped that of.

 

Whilst doing that I noticed the tabs at the rear had cracked so strengthened them with some plastic sheet

 

 

Glue a peice onto each side so should be ok for a while and with some tape around the edge I'm hoping it wont show when the new material goes on.

 

 

Also decided to fit a rear interior light. I like the one from the mk5 so thats whats going in.

 

 

 

Then tried it in place to be sure it wasn't hitting anything

 

 

I would have like to have covered it but the faux leather I bought some time back has been sat on the shelf, folded up, and has some nasty creases so its now hanging from the roof of the garage with a peice of wood stapled to the bottom to try to straighten the creases out :)

Have been recovering the roof lining which wasn't going quite to plan and then ran out of spray glue, will finish that today hopefully.

 

Spent the day yesterday running alarm wires, you'll understand if I dont show pics ;)

Then, as I only seem to be able to find grey A and C panels (but did find black B panels) I covered the C panels to match the roof

Had a day off today so prep'd the doors to spray tomorrow and also went back to the rear brakes with a slightly redesigned bracket

 

Next is the 20mm spacer needed for the caliper

Doors sprayed, not great, I think I need a new, better gun

Found some rear passat door handles on ebay, they are copies but at £7.40 each I thought it was worth a punt

 

 

Converted to work on Corrado doors

 

 

And fitted

 

 

 

If I'm honest, the quality of them isnt great, the metal seems a little soft but as I have gutted most of it and used the parts from a pair of VW handles I'm not that worried about them. We will see how long they last

You certainly get stuck in and the work and effort that has been put into this is incredible.
