PhatVR6 0 Posted April 20, 2004 looking from the front, is the top level, or is it higher at one end?
jedi-knight83 0 Posted April 20, 2004 you mean higher left and right, or higher front and back? i can go take a look if you like. are we talking millimeters or feet??
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 20, 2004 It sits higher at the back to slope the engine forwards and also higher at the left than the right. K
PhatVR6 0 Posted April 20, 2004 I know it leans forwards, it wouldn't fit under the bonnet otherwise. I was just a bit concerned at how high it sits on the drivers side. Wasn't sure whether there was a problem with my subframe or the engine mount. I'm used to seeing them in mk2's, with a modified rear mount to bring that side down you see so mine looks a bit alien to me. Cheers Kev, you've put my mind at rest. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 20, 2004 No they sit like that in all Corrado VRs. Probably why the shrick hits the bonnet.
PhatVR6 0 Posted April 20, 2004 So why don't you corrado owners modify the rear mount too so it sits lower? I can't, otherwise the prop will hit the steering rack.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 20, 2004 Not sure! I know the sump sits real close to the offside chassis leg/wishbone..... could be something to do with that? I know VW had a right mare getting it to fit in there so I'm loathe to change their good work!!
PhatVR6 0 Posted April 20, 2004 no, it sit's about 1" in front of that, it'll go down a good 20mm no problem. both my mk2's had a lowered rear mount.
PhatVR6 0 Posted April 20, 2004 Buy? you don't need to buy anything, except a hacksaw to cut the mount down and a tube of sikfelx to fill in all the holes to stiffen it up.
dr_mat 0 Posted April 20, 2004 My sarcasm filter wasn't on, sorry.. otherwise that message would never have been posted.

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 21, 2004 sorry, "sikaflex" 221, liquid polyurethane. mongy fingers... Or Loctite/Henkel Terostat 9200, which is the same stuff.... Not that many places sell Sika products, excpet boat yards!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 21, 2004 Didn't notice it in mine.....
CoxyLaad 0 Posted April 21, 2004 I was told the engine slopes right to left in order to counteract torque steer. Something to do with the unequal length driveshafts...
DanA 0 Posted April 21, 2004 Does that mean then that the oil can't be accuratly checked on the flat then ? Dan
PhatVR6 0 Posted April 21, 2004 Fair point....
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 21, 2004 The engine doesn't tilt as much as it 'appears' to. It's more likely to do with clearancing than counteracting torque steer. No amount of engine tilting will compensate for unequal length shafts, but the VR6 is not particlularly prone to torque steer anyway. And the engine is flat enough for oil reading purposes. If it was *that* critical, VW would have used an electronic level guage. K
PhatVR6 0 Posted April 21, 2004 And it just so happens my shafts are almsot equal length anyway due to the sycnro transfer box :D oh, and I have a Torque biasing diff.....and 4wd to come!! oh joy
dr_mat 0 Posted April 21, 2004 I think the engine is more or less perfectly vertical, it's just that the bonnet slopes off to the left a lot, and it makes the engine *look* as if it's tilted. Look down the left hand side of the engine block - the belt components are parallel to the bulkhead wall, more or less.
PhatVR6 0 Posted April 21, 2004 Err, no, the bonnet is open, it's nothing to do with that. I'm comparing the bottom of the block (sump gasket) with the top of the rad support (which is level as it sits flush under the chassis legs).
dr_mat 0 Posted April 21, 2004 Yeah, but the rest of the bonnet opening also slopes. I have to admit, I always thought that my sump gasket was pretty much horizontal. I could be wrong, it was not something I looked that closely at...
