scott1980 10 Posted December 18, 2012 (edited) After the bulb behind the mileometer display went , and a bit of a root round on here , decided to change the look of my dash a little. The bulb was £2.49 from halfords , and seeing as I had already drove there and wanted to do the job that day , I bought it ( I took the faulty bulb with me to make sure I got the reet one) The woman behind the counter asked if I wanted it fitting ..."errrr .. no thanks ill just put it where I got this one from" :bonk: Took the green diffuser out of the gauge cover and replaced it with a bit of a filter craftily cut from a disco light in my dads garage :rainbowafro: haha . Here's the end result , im going for blue ultimately , because then the needles will still shine orange but my dials will be blue (if you get me) I'm fairly pleased for half an hours work :) and will take about 10 minutes to put back to standard ! dragon green 5 Posted December 19, 2012 Looks good, are you going to do the mfa display, and mileometer ? A little tricky, but doable!
Hofmiester 10 Posted December 19, 2012 I have a set of inverse Red filters from DDI, £20 if you want them. They make the MFA screens look exactly like they do in the mk4 golf.
fla 9 Posted December 19, 2012 blue will look superb, with red digital displays. I've had mine like that for teh past few years and still not bored of them! For red needles, just remove them and spray them with red tinting spray - i just did that recently as the orange was really letting the clocks down. You'll need to redo the white layer on the back of the needles to ensure the light picks them up.
timmaaah 0 Posted December 19, 2012 I had all red illumination for a while - like you say, it's very easy to do. I went to blue/red a couple of years ago - the mfa and mile display are fairly easy to do - the blue is bluer in the flesh as it were and the needles are redder too. The light doesn't have that really intense bit - it's a really good, uniform illumination. The blue light is led strip from Maplin (iirc) rigged in place of the bulbs behind the film. I tried blue film, but it always looked cack. LED was the only way to get good illumination and colour. It all dims with the dimmer dial too. You can just turn over the polarising sheet on the lcd displays if you want them inverted (writing coloured with plain background instead of red background with black writing if that makes sense) :)
scott1980 10 Posted December 20, 2012 The futures bright ... the futures BLUE ! ha . Yeah going to swap to blue sooner rather than later , bought a new stereo head unit yesterday Sony MEX-BT3000 ...which is BRIGHT blue illumination. A good bit of kit for £80 (was £250 when it came out ..on offer at halfords) and doesn't really match my clocks now...AT ALL :/ The blue does look better , contrast with the needles .. mine are a bit plain now :( ha Ill have a look on maplins site an find that strip :) Hofmeister- I may just have them off you in the new year , if you still got em ! Awesome used to sell them but don't anymore apparently . Had a quick poke around with the MFA and Mileometer when I did the light , is it just a case of removing the face or can you slide the filter out ?
