993 v vr6 dilemma!!!

hi all

ive been a vw nut since i was a kid, beetles, variants, golfs etc

but ive always wanted a porsche 911 and think its the natural progression from vw ownership

 

have recently purchased my storm after 20yrs of looking and waiting!!

and after recently reading on here that the corrado is classed as a poor mans porsche!!

 

my thoughts diverted to my 911 dream again, and looking at the 993 prices they are within my budget.

 

but my dilemma is as much as i really do covert the 911, since my storm purchase apart from my mates 16 valver

i just dont see any corrados! but porsches they like every bloody where!!

 

so do i keep the storm and spend a bit on it? or sell it and get the less exclusive porsche?

so any input to what could make it a better car will be looked into my end.

993, no brainer really, and as you say a natural progression (says a lot for Corrado's), you can always come back into VR ownership once you have dealth with Porsche servicing costs (been there). Plus i am after a quality Storm with money waiting hint hint haha.

 

To be fair both cars put a smile on my face every time i see them, Porsche gets the Gold from me though...

With your history of classic rear engine VWs, surely you would be more at home with a more classic 911, like a 930 or 964.

 

A pucker VR6 is akin to a 944 from a handling point of view, but the only connection between a 911 and. 944 is the porker badge.

996s and 997s yes, but I rarely see a 993 these days.

 

I drove a friend's 993 3.6 widebody (LHD) some years ago and loved it. The acceleration, the purity of the steering, the flat cornering, grip out of corners etc are all lasting memories. Unfortunately, another lasting memory is the ghastly interior. As much as I love 911s, I couldn't live with an interior that dated. In fact I'd almost find it an embarrassment. Brown carpet on the doors?!? What were Porsche thinking?!? lol!

Not even a debate!!!! 993 everytime. There is not one thing I dont like about them. Evo did a test a few months back and had every 911 model in the basic 2wd version and actually raved about the 964 as being the biggest surprise however the 993 is still the best looking by a mile though. 993 RS would be dream for me.

I agree with an above post though for all you would get for your Corrado it wouldnt make a huge dent in the 993 budget I suspect.

That might stretch your budget a little too far so maybe a different flavour ;) lol

 

tough choice you have, would keeping the storm until you have purchased & are confident you only want the 993 be out of the question :)

993Porkers are my dream car, I have been saving for a few years for a good one!..I think Corrados have a similar design/engineering ethos..however, like others have said the 993is in a different league as a driving tool. As long as you have the funds for to get a good in and the ongoing commensurate maintenance funds then you have to go for a 993. You only live once and it's one of the most characterful and evocative machines ever made..

I'd love a 993 turbo (with an updated interior!) but the way my friend's 3.6 Varioram accelerated, I'd be happy with that tbh. Torque everywhere in the rev range and relentless pull to the redline. My C was Stage 2 S/C'd at the time and the 993 didn't feel much quicker overall, if at all, but it was the power delivery that did it for me. Waaaaaay better than an S/C'd VR6 and the whole car felt considerably more stable and able to deploy it's power. The brakes, despite being beefy 4 pots did need a hefty shove before being effective. You think a VR6 has a dead pedal, try a 993s!!

 

To me it was exactly the same kind of ambivalence you get with Corrados. Nice cars, but.....

Agree with Kev, that interior is dire, (I couldn't live with it either) but, otherwise an excellent car.

 

I do not think Porsche ownership of any kind should be taken lightly when it comes to expense.

 

I think there would be nothing worse than having a car you really desire then not being able to service it properly, even just having/affording good right tyres etc etc.

Better to have a car you can properly afford and therefore enjoy.

Absolutely hit the nail on the head just for example new shape m3 don't know how much for tyres/servicing etc but I understand they have a fair whack in power department nevertheless very seriously struggled with my r32 I can't see a Porsche offering much more and I know there are vr6/ turbo/ charger corrado with more power than mine remind me why we are comparing to 993

I brought a boxster s then quickly progressed to a 993, I'm not going to rave on how your life is less without one, but it is. Amazing car, and I can't wait for the next step. Porsche and vw are as one, IMO.

Find a good specialist and servicing costs are negligible, tyres are costly, so obviously is fuel. I use mine as a daily, just 8 miles a day, plus a little weekend use will see £78 of super, gone in ten days. But I drive it without much care. This time of year with no traction control often leaves a strange taste in your mouth, and that flat exhaust note is great!

My advice, just go for it, if its not for you then you'll not loose a penny if you keep up the maintenance :)

I am sorry but even if you have a specialist who is your best mate he costs are far from negligible you say you use your's daily for 8 miles a day plus wkend's .What car are we talking about here your vr6 or your c55 if it's either what is this got to do with a 993 sorry if I seem a tad confused James.

^^ Note its a 'Cat D' and looks to have had the typical numerous owners that I observe of many Porsche's - if looking at the Service History geography is anything to go by.

Numerous owners isn't a problem, so long as the servicing and service history are up to date and not skimped on. They all seem to have loads of owners who have kept them for a season then moved on to a sensible car when children or house purchases have caught up with them. The one thing about a 911 that puts me off, is that nearly everything is an engine out job or at the least take hours of labour to complete. Thus the simplest mechanical tasks (plugs, oil filter) cost a fortune.

 

Also, they're not that quick; there's masses more out there that's quicker for the money - even a supercharged VR will keep up for a fraction of the cost. I agree that I'd have a 993 over any other shape (993 Turbo as a daily would be awesome, 993 RS for weekends) is the one to have and prices are only going one way now...up! So if you can afford one and importantly afford to look after it, then go for it. But keep the 'Rado if you've got space.

 

Finally, absolutely definitely buy the best one you can afford...

I think there is a significant amount of owners that are so wealthy, they do not really care for them, quite abused even, even though they may be properly serviced and maintained.

 

Of course this can be the case of any car, but I think it shows up more on the more expensive of vehicles.

Having been a dub head since the early 90's ending up at by the late 90's with a purple mk1 g60 i had built,that was in a lot of mags and i did all of the big shows back then, the natural progression was a 911.Before marriage kids and a big mortgage ,i've had two, both great cars, one an ex cup challenge car that i converted for the road and the other a classic 73.

All i can say is that until you own one ,i dont think people really get them .you need to have one to understand. Don't get me wrong i still love vw's thats why i came back to them and why i'm building a corrado. But my advice to any one with a 991 type itch,would be to go for it.
