VR or valver?

Well, i don't want an opinion on what's better, just on the difference in their characteristics.

 

I loved my old KR, how freely it revved and clawed the road past almost effortlessley, especially for 'just' 147bhp (it was a little modded).

 

I want another, but they are becoming quite hard to find, especially an early one, and most for sale that i seem to come accross within a tangeable distance are of the VR mould.

 

A friend of mine who has owned both a mk2 KR and a mk3 VR has said that characteristically they aren't too different - almost that the VR is just as happy and as quick to rev as the KR.

 

What are people's opinions on this?

 

It would open up the possibility of some 6-pot goodness in the future if it's true!

Exactly. That's what I've started saying to people who keep moaning about TDIs making a fool of them. If you can't keep with a TDI, you're in the wrong gear!

Ive just got rid of the kr and now have a vr. Both feel pretty much the same on the road, vr feels a fair bit quicker in my opinion....main difference for me... gotta be the sound, foot down in the vr and you will just sit there smiling at the acoustics.....EVERYTIME!

Just had my golf (MK7 GT) remapped from 150bhp to 180bhp and 400Nm........ the torque is brutal. The SC Vr6 doesn't get going until 4000 rpm by which point the Golf would have a good headstart. Only chance to catch is if you have a long stretch but in most day to day traffic scenarios, high power TDI is a winner.

 

On a stretch though, it runs out of puff at about 90 mph where as the SC VR6 is just getting started :)

/\ Yeah exactly! BMW forums have exactly the same debate with the 335d vs M3. Diesel is great for pulling a couple of car lengths on someone caught napping in the wrong gear / rpm, but if the M3 driver and 335d driver were both alert and Mr M3 was in the right gear and uses the full rev range, it would waste the 335d every time :)

 

I've yet to drive a diesel that has a broad enough power band to worry a well driven petrol of the same hp.

 

But diesel is fun in a point and squirt way. Just a shame the fun ends just as it gets started. Very frustrating!!

Yeah I found the 16 valvers do rev quite well but you've got to really rev them,

below 55 MPH, where as the 8v's have better low down rev / power delivery.

 

I've driven a Corrado 2.9 VR6 but that was a mates car that he had years ago.

I've also driven a MK3 Golf 2.8 VR6 and found both are good through all the rev rages,

with a good sharp power delivery.

I'd go with the VR6 over the 16v as they've got better power delivery,

the 16v feels like it's really on it's limit at high revs,

where as the VR6 seems more balanced as the power is there slightly sooner,

like with the 8v's.

 

 

What about the VR6 2.8 / 2.9 24v engine or head are they any good on power,

I'm only asking as I've never driven one.

 

I wanted a Corrado VR6 but went for the 2.0 16v as the insurance was cheaper back in the day,

my 2.0 16v is good but it does run out of puff towards the rev limit,

where as the 1.8 16v (KR) seems to rev a bit freer and has better power delivery.

 

I think the 1.8 16v (KR) came from the MK2 Golf (hot hatch)

so it's always been it little gem of an engine from day one,

where as the 2.0 16v (9A) came from the Passat (a family estate car)

I don't think VW changed the (9A) spec at all when they fitted it in the Corrado,

so it was never really set up from standard to perform as well as the KR engine.

 

Don't get me wrong I love my Corrado that I've got but at some point,

I might jump for the VR6 in the future.

 

I've seen a few look alike super cars (Kit cars) like the Ferrari 355 (base car used MK2 Toyota MR2)

Ferrari 360 / and a Ferrari 430 (base car used MK3 Toyota MR2)

Very strong torque between 2500-3000rpm, but then feels kind of flat, then gets better again at 4000rpm upwards. 5000 - 7000rpm is very strong on the R32.

 

Too much electronic interference (as in sticking it's beak in) on that engine though. It could be a lot better with a less intrusive ECU.

I have indeed sir and prior to that I had an R32 engine in my Corrado. That's currently owned by a member on here :)

 

I mentioned before in a similar discussion that I felt the MK4 R32 handled better than my Corrado, but that didn't go down to well :lol:

 

So I'll have a change of tact and say the MK4 R32 is far more effortless to hustle along a B road quickly. How's that for diplomacy? :D

 

In terms of performance between the two, surprisingly they feel about the same to me. I know that sounds odd given the Corrado's 250Kg weight advantage, but to me at least, they feel evenly matched.

 

What I would say is my Corrado handled better than MK5 R32. They really do feel their weight when you throw into a corner. The MK4 is much stiffer sprung.

Nothing wrong with the 2.8 24v engines either it's a great improvement on the vr6 engine just doesn't have the induction roar!
