Back in a Corrado VR6 after 22 yrs

Recommended Posts

No bother ;) part no's have changed since then but any good part's man will find them. By the way the price's have gone up a bit in 9 years you can't get the arm's and blades for £40 unfortunately! Arm's are £60 each and blades another £45 for pair Vw cottoned on to people putting them on other car's and hiked the prices thank's VW Group.

You guys need to lighten up.

If the guy wants to sell his Corrado then it's his choice.

In my opinion if someone is daft enough to pay £8,990 for a Corrado and he makes a profit then good luck to him.

Hi All,

I did post on this subject a couple of weeks back - scroll back and you will see my long post and I wish to say a couple of other things as I have now owned the car for a few weeks.

This is a superb example of a Corrado, there will be few better however my position is that I bought it for reasons stated below and I really imagined that i would be able to jump into it at any time and go for a blast with my kids however I should have known better. I am not someone who is inclined or even able to tinker with cars when they go wrong both because I am a non mechanically minded person and because I simply do not have time - like many people I leave for work at 6am, I return from work at 8pm - I drive between 1hr and 21/2 hrs each way every day depanding on which of my depots and I do this 6 days a week. I have to go to and so I simply have no time to get things sorted on the car - only minor things like the heater running on speed 4 take up hours of my time - luckily I was pointed in the right direction and it is only a fuse but I have no time to sort it or get it to a garage - I have an ABS light on and am awaiting a new ABS pump as I am told this is what it is but I cannot be certain. The enjoyment I imagined is not there and someone else should enjoy this great car.

It appears that people do not read everything on here - the car may well be on e-bay and has been put there by my friend who is a car dealer and needs to make profit but I posted on here (where Corrado enthusiasts hang out) that if I get my money back on the car I would be delighted for it to go to a new home.

I purchased it for £7,100 off Bill and have done the following:

Collection from St Andrew's Scotland £199.50 (fee + train ticket + fuel)

New Headlight Loom approx £50

Service, fit headlamp wirinbg kit and replace inop reverse light switch £184.87

I have purchased the fuse to solve the heater problem and I will have an ABS pump in the next 2-3 weeks.

The car stands me at £7,534.37 but I will take £7,500 as I would hate anyone to think that I was making a profit - God forbid! Those who criticise my friend for trying to make a turn I look forward to seeing you make a loss on your when you sell your cars however I am certain you will attempt not to do so because profit is not a dirty word.

See below my initial post when I was first vilified - the above comment from Seanl82 makes me feel that this is not a forum or a lifestyle in which I wish to hang out and even more so I have no intention of taking my kids to shows where I might come across people who have bigotted opinions such as his - I am sure he is the exception to the rule as shown by DriverVR6 but his comments about someone he doesn't even know and about a fan of VR6s who was driving the very first VR6 in the country when he was possibly still at primary school should grow up and think before making comments at midnight.

The End

POSTING FROM A COUPLE OF WEEKS BACK:

Just to put the record straight, the car you refer to is being stored in my mate's car showroom - Specialist Cars of Kendal - which was set up by my business partner and I a few years ago to sell interesting cars as a hobby and we sold it on to Roger who worked there approx 3 years ago. The car will be on show for people to look over and admire when not being used on dry days.

Like most things in life (excluding the wife and kids)it is for sale however if it does sell my kids have promised me that they will be hell to pay. We all went out in it in a gorgeous weekend in the Lakes and it was fantastic; currently it is at a specialist VW garage with a mechanic who worked on Corrados originally and raves about them so it will get the continued love and attention it deserves - an oil and filter change with OEM parts, the headlight wiring loom upgraded and hopefully the heater fixed as that does not work along with a few other niggles like intermittent ABS light and the temp guage not working this morning although after 50 miles I turned off the ignition and both started to work again.

As I said previously I owned the very first VR6 in the country J629 OFR bought out of VW in Haydock (they no longer exist) and loved it - I have been searching for one for years and this one finally fitted the bill and will get the love, attention and respect it deserves with due deference to Chris who did such a fantastic job on it.

Should someone come along who wishes to take ownership of this vehicle it will be because they think it is a fabulous example which is pretty much original and I am someone who will keep it that way whether it stays in the family for a few weeks or a few years.

I am disappointed that anyone on the forum feels that they have any right whatsoever to judge me or my motives as they do not know me from Adam. Profit is no motivation whatsoever in this case as the profit if it sold insigificant in its effect upon my life and anyway as you rightly say it is highly unlikely it will sell at that price. I find a potential owner that I think will love it and will pay that price or very close to it then:

a) my wife and kids will possibly still talk to me

b) If anyone wants it, they will be able to afford to keep it in the condition it should be.

Incidentally I have no intention of advertising on here but hopefully people will be helpful in pointing me in the right direction should it need parts as it is already showing up a few problems as I said previously and I want to keep it as close to perfect as possible.

Just one more thing - I doubt that there can be many better examples of a VR6 around and it is great that the marque is so admired and my judgemet of what a great car it is was correct back in 1992. I appreciate that previous owners may look at me as a heratic but that is the perogative of previous owners of this particular vehicle and interestingly enough if this does sell at a higher price it will positively effect the residual value of all superb examples of VR6 Corrados so you all win if you have one and look after it.

I have said my bit and I am unlikely to comment further as a slanging match and abuse from those who think they know better and have some devine right to judge me

I did read the previous comments, however my last comment still stands. I am not attacking you personally, so your comments are unwarranted. I know this car though, and whilst there may be the odd slight problem, it's still one of the best out there. For those reasons, I feel aggrieved that it has been put through the mill a bit recently. As I said, it's not a personal attack, just disappointment. You are however incorrect about me being in primary school. It's was senior school as it happens. That is neither here nor there though, you have made it personal by thinking you know ME. I am not the minority, but best of luck with the sale.

Obviously your lifestyle dictates that you would be too busy to attend shows anyway, so it's no great loss imo.

Wow. This forum baffles me sometimes, the guy has bought a car he wanted and now realises its not for him at this time. I think we have all made similar mistakes at some point. From what he's said he has had work carried out using OEM parts by professionals so i hardly think the car has been "through the mill" - has my car been through the mill because I'd rather struggle doing the work on it myself rather than pay expensive labour costs at VW or any other pro garage for that matter ?

Good luck with the sale bud and hopefully at some point you will be back. I think you should try and find the last corrado that was ever produced, that way you can say you've had the first and the last !!

I'm going to try and explain why I feel you've received this reception here Steve, and I hope you'd understand that actually it's a sign of a very enthusiastic and passionate community and that, if the circumstances were different, you might have have received a different welcome here.

I'm both an admin on here, and a committee member for the CCGB. I've given a lot of my time over the last decade (if not longer) helping to organise events, group buys, production of the club magazine, etc. I don't say this in an attempt to attract praise and massage an ego, I say it to underline the fact I'm a real enthusiast for not only these cars - but also, and probably more importantly, for the community around it.

What disappoints me is that this car belonged to a very well liked member on this forum who very reluctantly sold his car because of difficult personal circumstances, and aside from a spell with another enthusiast, has subsequently gone through the mill of changing hands. There's nothing more I can say than it just ****es me off. Cars in this condition are few and far between - yes there may be a few small niggles which need sorting but, overall, this has to be one of the best cars in the country still. It's extremely disheartening knowing the history of the car, and the condition of the car, that it's struggling to find a good home and seems to be used as being a profit making exercise.

So I'm sorry for the criticism you have taken on this forum Steve as you do seem to be a reasonable guy, but you must understand why so many of us are disappointed with the situation surrounding this car - it's not your fault really, and you just happen to have bought a car which has become something of a totem for the frustration many of us feel about seeing good Corrado's being, essentially, speculated on.

There's not many of them left, and to us they're special. They may be mass produced VW's, but for whatever reason they strike a chord for a lot of us. But it's not just about the cars, but also the former owners, and as I say Bill was a well liked guy who meticulously maintained the car, and was a real enthusiast and he sold the car under difficult circumstances.

And this is why this car has become such a hot potato unfortunately.

That said, I accept we probably should get a little more sense of perspective about all this and as I'm keen to underscore that for me personally there's no hard feelings to you directly - just frustration / disappointment about the situation in general.

Hi Jim,

A very fair and balanced comment but I can only say that I have put it on here where there are true enthusiasts at what it stands me - it is indeed on e-bay at a higher value but anyone who wants and is a member of this forum can have it at what I have posted. I accept that the car has had a bit of a bad run in the ownership stakes recently and that is why I am offering it on here at cost price so hopefully this time it goes not only to someone who wants it but someone who has the time and inclination to tinker with what is an exceptional car that will not go down in value if kept in the condition in which it is currently and over time will increase I believe being a modern classic.

Incidentally I have not included the £100 professional valet which means polishing is not required for probably 18 months or more as some outrageously expensive product was used by the guy who used to do our Ferraris and Astons when I had the garage before Roger. The parts and oil for the service and about 3/4 tank of fuel are also not accounted for so I don't think I am being greedy and the car is the right price unless I paid way over the odds when I bought it which nobody seems to think I did.

I doubt that someone on e-bay will give Roger his commission payment but remember if he sells the car, he has to stand on it under trading law whether he asks for a disclaimer or not i.e. he can say sold with no warranty but in law that does not hold any water - as a private seller i am selling under caveat emptor rules and have no risk whatsoever.

Is that fair comment Jim?

Seems very fair to me, Steve.

Again, I think you're a fair guy and that absolutely comes across in your posts and I believe you bought the car with good intentions. It's just unfortunate that it happened to be a very well known car, was all.

I know someone who was interested in the car prior to your purchase so I'll point it out to him.

err we are talking about vw's right?

I must be doing something wrong, I've owned loads, and never once, ever, ever gained a profit!

if i brake even it is a result, but then i put loads of money into them and get loads of enjoyment back and thats a true enthusiasts 'profit'

cars owe you nothing, they are just what they are worth, if i was selling mine and something went wrong, then i replaced said part, i wouldn't then add that to the price list....its just wear and tear

but regardless, its steve's car, he could buy it and scrap it if he wanted, its his after all!

if he stripped it and made it into a track car, what would we think then? just a thought

and at that price it will only really sell to one of us or a behind the scenes collector who will stick it in a air con garage

+ if it does sell for that, can only make ours worth more

good luck with the sale, its a shame you won't get the pleasure out of it we all know you potentially could

Not sure why this has come up on the board again - presumeably some glitch with the system?

No Steve, I had missed that post from Jim and it just kinda irritated me when I read it, more or less saying I'm not an enthusiast, after having been a member here for over 8 years and having had 6 Corrados... make up your own minds

You don't reckon you could be the enthusiast he mentioned then?

I didn't mean that at all Bill - as you say, you've been on here years. Sometimes just the way one can write things on here can easily come across wrongly or be misconstrued. Apologies if I offended you.

But I still can't hide my disappointment that it's changed hands several times regardless of the circumstances around it and the reasons, whatever they may be. That's in no way intended as a slight against anyone who's had the car in that time - I'm frustrated with the situation, not the people involved along the way.
