Eug 0 Posted July 1, 2004 Ok I've had the K&N 57i on my previous Rado ... looking to try something different. Anybody had any experience with say the PiperCross ? How about BMC ? RamAir ? Any to stay clear of ? I've heard that the cotton ones are better. Don't want one too loud. The K&N was quite a noisy bugger
Scott 0 Posted July 1, 2004 RAM AIR... no competition
RadoAds 0 Posted July 1, 2004 I had a Ramair on my Mk3 VR and it was sweeeeeet!!!!! Highly Recommended 8)
Scott 0 Posted July 1, 2004 Yup quiet at low rpm.... nice deep roar when get to 4000 rpm....
VR6 0 Posted July 1, 2004 RAM AIR... no competition  Turn2 cold air induction kit. Does exactly what it says on the tin ;) .... and none of this heat shield malarky ;)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 1, 2004 Yeah the CAI type are the most effective.
MoonlightVR 0 Posted July 1, 2004 Have a K&N on mine which is fine if you drive sensibly  Floor it and it makes a TVR sound like a Fiesta! It's LOUD! Have driven a couple of VRs with the Ramair, which I have to say sounded great. Much more subtle when flooring it. But I prefer the K&N!!!
Scott 0 Posted July 1, 2004 Yes the turn 2 is great.... but compared to my £10 RAM AIR induction kit it was no competition ( I got lucky - a mate sold his VR6 and took the RAM AIR off - he forgot about it till I asked about it - ten notes he said *:D) :D
Eug 0 Posted July 1, 2004 Yeah I've seen those Turn2 cold air intakes. Certainly the best idea/concept seeing as you stick it from under the wheel arch and through the carbon canister hole, but I was thinking of spending no more than £100. These ones cost around £130 from http://www.turn2usa.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=T&Product_Code=t2_a3vrcai&Category_Code=cai Even comes with instructions just in case someone wants to do a similar mod for their existing cone filter: http://www.turn2usa.com/a3vr6caiinstall.html
DanA 0 Posted July 2, 2004 Hi Eug, we chatted for a while via ebay about filters :) (i was selling my K&N) The Ram air one sounds like it might be worth a go if its quieter than the K&N, would probably need a heat sheild making up though. I still think this CDA is the one to go for if you want performance, just way to expensive!!!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 2, 2004 Make one yourself then! Doesn't look difficult and the K&N filter for the end of the pipe is about £15-£20! You're paying all that money for a bit of bent tube.
Eug 0 Posted July 2, 2004 Too true Kev too true. So you're saying I don't need the K&N 57i cone filter then - just a "bent pipe" and a cheapo £15-£20 K&N filter ? Unfortunately I dont't have a garage or any tools otherwise I would make one up myself. Might be a little project or group buy methinks. Watch this space ... PhatVR6 0 Posted July 2, 2004 don't even consider running a cone filter in the engine bay. the throttle response once it's hot is terrible. and if you'r going to f*ck around making up aheat siled, then you may as well have just bought a panel filter and drilled your airbox. make up your own CAI intake pipe and mount it in place of the carbon cannister. that way you're gauranteed cols air. I even stuck the outside air temp sensor in my filter so I could check on it. I reccomend the huge Ram-Air filter too. they sould f*cking awesome, and yes they do fit wuite nicely behind the bumper, and you can even use the carbon canister bracket and the housing itself as part of the setup like I've done. It sounds f*cking awesome. even with the factory exhasut on it mine sounds like an M3 touring car! no, really, it barks like it's on throttle bodies. :D
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 2, 2004 The RAM-AIR looks ridiculous though. Like Michael Jackson in his early years. There's nothing wrong with the stock air box. Don't see what the fascination is.
stormseeker 0 Posted July 2, 2004 Tools you would need are screwdrivers and a hacksaw? Big K&N cone filter (might be more in the region of £30 - £45 ), some aluminium tubing (3"???) and a 90degree bend. See DIY CAI for some pointers...[/url]
_leon_ 0 Posted July 2, 2004 which RamAir have you guys used exactly?
PhatVR6 0 Posted July 2, 2004 The RAM-AIR looks ridiculous though. Like Michael Jackson in his early years. There's nothing wrong with the stock air box. Don't see what the fascination is. you can't see it when it's behind the bumper. the fascination is the noise Kev.....you HAVE to hear a VR with a proper induction kit on it, you will be sold. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 2, 2004 Oh right I'm with you now. I thought you were talking about putting it in the engine bay! I don't mind the induction roar in short bursts but it does my head in on long journeys. Someone needs to invent switchable airbox tuning? Quiet on the motorway, noisy round town?
PhatVR6 0 Posted July 2, 2004 it doesn't make a noise on long journeys, only whan you have the throttle wide open. it's not like a poxy "big bore " exhaust. if I drive it sedately (I can when I try) you'd never even guess it was a VR apart from the nice burble. but when you boot it, all hell breaks loose and it turns heads at 100 yards! whether you like that sort of thing is up to you, but I f*cking love it, and I always drop a gear or 2 when going through a tunnel just so I can horse it right through and deafen everyone (as anyone who came to germany with us will testify). I can't get enough of the VR induction roar, it's addictive. even better with the schrick on too, you can actually hear it change in note when the flap opens. kieron 0 Posted July 2, 2004 Unless you use a heatshield to keep at least some engine heat away I'd say none of them. Also bear in mind that the biggest change you'll notice will not be power but noise and a LOT of it. I've made small children fall off their bikes with mine! The RAM Air filter looks ridiculous IMHO, like a big Victoria sponge in your engine bay. and the BMC doesn't fit very well in Corrados. Its ok in Golfs though. I've a Turn2 CAI that has been sat around boxed for 2 years waiting to go on instead of the Eurosport/ITG I have currently installed. Eurosport actually started copying Turn2, or it could be vice-versa, and theirs now drops down through the hole where the carbon can is. The concept of the Turn2 kit is the way to go IMO though I have yet to try it.

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 2, 2004 I hear what Phat is saying though, I need to get some more air in my engine to feed that hungry swamp monster, just not keen on the noise though. The 10 year old exhaust is not helping matters either.
Jim 2 Posted July 2, 2004 Just get a bloomin Milltek system Kev and be done with it ;)
