robrado974 1 Posted September 28, 2016 Evening chaps . While my car is sorn , as im refurbing the underside , ive been looking at a few other bits that need sorting . The battery tray is in good condition but has a little surface rust . What is the best way to treat this before paint ?.Also im going to use a rattle can to spray the area afterwards , so where do you get good quality paint in a can ?. Tjninny 10 Posted September 28, 2016 Rob, I struggled to find aqua blue pearl so in the end I bought a can and lacquer from someone in Ireland off eBay - it was mainly for the drivers side a post and sill under the plastic trim so not crucial for a great finish prior to proper respray at some point, but I as very pleasantly surprised with the quality of finish. Let me know if you want me to try and find out who I got it off. Cheers, Tim.
bristolbaron 11 Posted September 28, 2016 Dont buy halfords stuff, its really thin. I got paint from a place local to me www.avonautocolours.co.uk before which was pretty good. I'd see if you have anyone local, or ask a bodyshop where they get paint from.
seanl82 23 Posted September 28, 2016 I've used paints4u before a couple of times Rob, mixed results with regard to colour match bur not a million miles off, and won't be noticeable in that area if it is off. Good price too.
Jim Bowen 1 Posted September 28, 2016 I wasn't too happy with the stuff i got from paints4u, no matter what i tried the paint came out really dull and flat with bo sparkle. Maybe a dodgy batch. I must have bought paint from most places including the dealers but found this place to be the best for the top coat. http://www.autopaint-pro.co.uk And then for lacquer i get this stuff, really good lacquer http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/201657543252?lpid=122&chn=ps&adgroupid=33170564523&rlsatarget=pla-257284468440&adtype=pla&poi=&googleloc=1007108&device=m&campaignid=661219804&crdt=0&ul_ref=http%253A%252F%252Frover.ebay.com%252Frover%252F1%252F710-134428-41853-0%252F2%253Fmtid%253D1673%2526kwid%253D1%2526crlp%253D138747902141_563391%2526itemid%253D201657543252%2526targetid%253D257284468440%2526device%253Dm%2526mpre%253Dhttp%25253a%25252f%25252fwww.ebay.co.uk%25252fitm%25252flike%25252f201657543252%25253flpid%25253d122%252526chn%25253Dps%2526adtype%253Dpla%2526googleloc%253D1007108%2526poi%253D%2526campaignid%253D661219804%2526adgroupid%253D33170564523%2526rlsatarget%253Dpla-257284468440%2526gclid%253DCj0KEQjw1K2_BRC0s6jtgJzB-aMBEiQA-WzDMWhWmQAPMnZUOYR97WI9yxovdmduCIAXtQAqwq8BQ7oaAsRU8P8HAQ%2526srcrot%253D710-134428-41853-0%2526rvr_id%253D1101561293624 Still debating on a good primer though. VW_OwneR_85 2 Posted September 29, 2016 if you have access to an air compressor even a small 25L, buy a small sand blasting gun {£25} and cover the engine and car , it makes jobs like this an absolute breeze especially in hard to reach corners, then expoy prime bare metal., if the rust isnt 100% removed then you have only brought yourself time before it grows again, rust treatments/convertors are crap and not worth the risk of paint bubbling up in the future... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Spot-Sand-Blasting-Kit-Air-Compressor-Remove-Rust-Paint-Dirt-Nozzles-90-PSI-/131422454717?hash=item1e996383bd:g:nhcAAOSwPhdU1I8- use etch primer if you want but epoxy primer is far better here, its water proof!! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SPRAYMAX-2K-EPOXY-PRIMER-FILLER-BEIGE-400ML-AEROSOL-SPRAY-2680032-/261565453345?hash=item3ce6841421:g:LHEAAOxyLN9Sh5Eu

JoeHurley 10 Posted October 24, 2016 Take the surface rust area back to bare metal, with a wire wheel or something that can get into the pitted metal, etch(Upol or mipa) branded aerosols are good, prime, rubbed it back till smooth then paint. I would take the fuel filler cap and the paint code to a local automotive paint shop and get them to make you up an aerosol of paint. It will be a better match the anything online.
