High mileage VR6 corrados..............................

I'm new to the corrado scene and I'm looking to buy my first VR6, but most of the cars advertised seem to have pretty high mileages 100k plus. What I want to know are these engines good for high mileages and are there certain checks that can be made when I'm examining perspective purchases.

 

I drove a VR6 this week with 165k!!, but to be honest it drove really well, still pretty tight and it felt right, but the mileage put me off.

 

Can anyone shed any light on this matter.

VR6 engine should, if properly maintained (look for a good service history) be able to crunch up an indefinate amount of miles.. i'd suspect 250k/300k wouldnt be difficult.

 

It is a well built & strong VW engine.. regular oil changes, appropriate driving behaviour (letting it warm properly before using high speed and revs), and all the other stuff should see it lasting a long time. Dont be put off by a high miler as long as it comes with all the paperwork!

Yeah exactly what I was going to say really.

 

If the engine has been looked after, it will be able to run for a very long time. Trouble is that obviously a lot of parts will need replacing as they reach the end of their life.

 

On the last two Golf GTI's I had, the one with 120k miles was a lot quicker than the one with 60k on! I'm considering buying another GTI, in addition to the C, but I will purposely go for one with over 100k.

You know I like the Golf Paul :) It's not too different to the one I've just sold. Just a bit out of my price range and I think I'd be better spending some cash on the VR.

Hello there all

 

Ive doen quite a bit of work on high milage VR6 units and the engine are built well but top cam chain guides do wear without you knowing ,they wont make a noise that would alarm you and due to the 15 degree V cylinder and shallow pistons ,bore wear happens prematurely on the thrust side which makes a light knocking noise when cold and putting load on engine, when the engine warms up the noise fads away and yes the vr will still pump out loads of power!

 

The VR units are built well but like all engines will wear(even with full VWSH ! )

Make sure all the electrics work !!! Sunroof(prone to screw up),windows,mirrors,rear spoiler(also at speed--- 60mph it comes up)

Check that ABS light goes off after start up.

Then do the usual checks ,tyres pannel alignment etc

 

Then Buy with your head not your heart do HPI !!!!

 

VR's are worth the chew on and reward you with one cracking drive :wink:

the spoiler setting was changed for later models(8v,16v and vr6)......though in the storm brochure it still states it goes up at approx 45mph....though in reality its 56-60mph

Well mines just gone past the magic 100k and having been rolling roaded its still putting out 191bhp / 185 lbft torque which is higher than standard figures....

 

The golden rule with any high mileage car is how well it has been looked after.... cars these days are so well built that decent servicing and looking after will ensure it see's 200k miles with ease...

 

Give me a 100k motorway mile muncher over a 50k towny car anyday *;)

 

So make sure it has a FSH (specialist or VW) with a load of reciepts ... check it all carefully ( to make sure its the right history for the right car :shock: ) - if has VW history then go to your main dealer and get them to tell you when it was last serviced by them to verify it .... I did this myself recently.

 

As mentioned HPi is a good thing.... *:)

 

And the most important rule of all - if it doesnt feel right or drive right then walk away.......

Thats new to me so far all the corrados if seen and drivin come at 60mph!

Unless the resistor in the box has been changed

My old 1991 G60 and my current '92 16v go up at 45mph. Think it's just VR's that are 60mph, unless the later 16v & 8v's were the same. Anyone?

no some early Vr's spoiler speed is 45mph.....its a model year thing as opposed to a model specific thing

The fact so many VRs have 100K plus under their belts is a testament to their driver appeal and longevity. These have always been two of VW's endearing qualities since the MK1 Golf GTi. VW's just do it better, for longer. Period.

 

The spoiler trigger threshold is irrelevant really, checking it raises at all is more important!

 

I've seen several VR engines in pieces and like James says, wear on the thrust sides is prevelant, but no more so than any of 1800 lumps. Number 6 cylinder has a habit of going first. No one knows why but I suspect there is a cooling weakness in that area. VW are not excluded from cock-ups. Vince showed me a standard VR engine that had it's conrods fitted back to front in the factory and early 16V heads had horrendous cooling channel design faults.

 

At the end of the day, if the engine pulls well, doesn't drink oil and doesn't make any strange noises, it's a good un. Common to all VAG engines is tappet rattle, but these are cheap and fairly easy to replace.

 

Knocking noises when cold are due to piston slap and common to all engines, especially 6 cylinder ones. All my 6 cyl BMWs used to sound like diesels for a few seconds in the morning but the engines were confirmed as healthy and well within tolerance.

I would let the engine idle for a minute before driving off in the morning to allow the ultra acidic vapours to disperse. Thrashing a cold engine will kill it quickly.
