Replacement car options once the vr's gone.

Recommended Posts

Been considering a few things but can't decide, any thoughts on this appreciated.

1. E36 BMW M3 - Would make a nice change and RWD would be fun, but TBH, I doubt I could afford the running costs and they dont have a great image about here.

2. Honda Integra Type R - I like this option a lot, great handling car but not any quicker than the VR in a straight line and at about the same purchase price as an M3 I doubt I could afford many mods to make it quicker.

3. Mike Edwards 16v and Turbo kit if still available - im favoured towards this option along with 2 at the moment. The car could be stripped out to be very light, stiffen up the shell and save for a 6speed with peloquin diff. Mikes car seems ideal for this as its already got Koni coilovers and Brembos.

The other obvious one is to just keep the vr and do more to that, but its a great car as it is along with the fact that a lot of the stuff thats already been upgraded would need to be upgraded again it seems to make more sense to sell it on. (I would likely want to upgrade to coilovers, it already has konis. Id want bigger wheels, but just got refurbed speedlines, the 6 speed box would be mad, as ive just got the quaife fitted, so on.)

Any thoughts on the above options appreciated, refinement of the car isnt an issue as I dont do many motorway miles and can manage without a car for work if need be.

The M3s next on my list. Theres only so much you can do with a front wheel drive car and the VR6 is probably as good as that gets, so its the next logical step!

I'd say either keep it. Or buy Mike's and fit a 20vT. The Honda is good but I couldn't live with the Vtech everyday. I drove

my mates to and from Crail last year and I had to rev the balls of it to go anywhere. A bit tiring really.

Option 3! Just for the simple fact I wanna see/hear what a turbo'd 16V goes like! Plus it's a rado, which IMO is far more aestetically pleasing than a Beemer or a Honda Civic Type R (which isn't without it's charms mind).

Good luck whatever you decide to do. :D

G60, E30 M3 is a nice car but they are only available in LHD, I dont think i could live with that.

Pau1, If I was going the 20vt route id try and find a cheaper c, but I like the sound of the 16vt and Mikes car has a recently rebuilt engine (though the bottom end would need work for fi) so if I could get a hold of the turbo kit it would be ace.

randal_24, Im keen to see that as well, especially in a stripped out C with coilovers, uprated arb's and so on...

E36 M3 - Driven one wasn't immediately impressed. Full bore launches are far easier with those fat rear wheels and RWD + LSD and the engine is mega smooth and grunty. I just didn't like the way it felt on the road. The steering was numb, tramlined a lot and didn't really feel involving, the steering is under geared too. The suspension is far superior to the Corrado's though.

Integra T R - Not too clued up on them but if the drive in Civic TR is anything to go by, the novelty of the rock hard suspension and narrow torque band soon wears off.

Corrado 16V T - Now that is the most appealing option to me having had a 16V Turbo MK2. FWD is fine if configured properly as you know. Look at the RS Focus, it's quicker than a Subaru round a track.

The 16V T is a lovely engine if used with K star & extra injectors or a standalone.

I liked the subarus for a long time, but have recently gone off them for some unknown reason. Insurance is a bit steep too, more than an M3 unless I go for a standard UK Turbo that would be slower than the VR above 60

I quite like the Civic Type R, but they start about £12k and for £15k theres the new shape Integra Type R, cant afford either but the 'teg would be good. 8)

beeftech, both nice cars, but I dont really know anything about Porsches, dunno about any local specialists or anything like that and again, high running costs.

i'm sure jim at star can handle sorting these 2 out........the 968's achilles heel seemingly is the cam timing(Variocam) as it can jump a tooth or two whereas the 944 Turbo is relatively simple-ish.......its only an 8v 4 pot in either 220bhp or 250bhp flavours as standard both being 2.5litres

if you can i would try and see if you could drive LHD.........cos the E-30 M3 is meant to be a total driver's car......which i reckon would suit yer driving to a T

944's seem to fairly cheap to maintain.....for a porka! It even has the same side repeaters as the Corrado!, Weird Gearbox/Axle set-up like, it's where the diff should be, right in the middle of the back wheels!

If you fancy one, make sure it's had a clutch, Bloke I was speaking to 2nite, has got a reciept (from a UK Porsche Main Dealer) for a clutch replacement, £350 for the clutch and £3725 in Labour to fit it

eeeeK!

they are cheap to service......its just to repair they are the stuff of nightmares   .....i also had to replace the clutch on mine.....well on the A/C compresser that is    .........£400-ish later and lighter............the annoying thing too is that you can't re-route the A/C or just do away with it........cos the alt belt is also the same belt that the A/C uses

Probably about 9k, if I get something a bit cheaper though I dont need to worry about the running costs as much.
