ABS Warning light

My ABS light comes on when I hit 5 mph.

I thought this meant a broken sensor,  I've tested all four and they have the correct resistance reading, and there is voltage of 5v at each connection point.

Any ideas where to look next please?

Yeah, bent/loose  or damaged ABS rings is a good bet - also, sensors or wiring can still be faulty even though your are getting good readings.

On the VR6 you can pull fault codes from the ABS ECU with VCDS - not sure if this is an option on hte G60?

I've cleaned the rings but no joy

Is the voltage to the sensors meant to be running at 5 volts or should I have 12 volts?

I tested between the positive terminal of the sensor feed  and to the battery neutral and still got 5 volts.

I've jacked the car up and spun all four wheels. 

Either rear wheel will trigger the light when I manually spin the wheels.

I really don't think that both sides can have a sensor or ring problem.

Has anyone got an idea why both rears would trigger please?

The system works by comparing wheel speeds - all 4 corners at the same time.

Measure resistance of the sensor, they should all be more or less the same

If you spin the wheels with a multimeter connected to the unplugged sensors you should get a small voltage reading.

Will VCDS not connect?

A garage tried VCDS and could not connect. However, Tempest RS used it on the ABS system 3 years ago and it read ABS faults.  (now closed down)

Each sensor reads 1150 Ohms which is  correct . 

The voltage on the pins that feed the senors are reading just under 5 volts. I'm not sure if the ABS system runs at 5v or 12v. 

I don't suppose you would be able to confirm on this Dox? 

Or if anyone else can confirm this by doing a quick voltage test on their sensor feed. I would help me at least clear up that query.

The sensors are like tiny alternators, if you spin the wheel with the multimeter connected to the two pins in the sensor (wiring disconnected) set to volts you should see small voltages displayed.

this proves the sensors are being flagged by the reluctor rings

Both near side sensors are reading a max of 6 volts

Both offside sensors are reading a max of 38 volts

Thoughts please Dox?

0.6 and 0.38 volts you mean?

 

either way there’s a large discrepancy side to side, but at least it shows the reluctor rings are being picked up by the sensors? It could just be you’re better at turning wheels faster on one side than the other?

You really need to see all 4 sensor readings on a gentle drive to see which corner isn’t reading correctly 

id imagine tempest still has his vcds set up if you contact him he may still be local?

Sorry I am inexperienced with a multimeter.

The meter was set to DC and the lcd showed       00.0 m V

 I could only get a reading at the very slowest speed of wheel turn, as soon as I span the wheel any faster than crawl speed the voltage would drop to zero.

Those reading  were the highest  I witnessed.

I.e   the  offside flashed as high as 38.0   and the near side as high as 06.0

I tested each side 5 times doing the same wheel speed to make sure I got the correct results.

Tempest RS was a garage in Retford that has closed down. I did mange to speak with him briefly but he is no longer in the industry sadly.

So you're in Nottingham? You could try C and R enterprises?

I have an ancient laptop that has a very early VGAGOM program on,(inc 2 x 2 adaptor) James off the forum used it to trouble shoot his ABS

I'm in Coventry.  I took the drive up to Retford because the chap was an ex employee of JMR and very knowledgeable with Corrado's.

The garage who tried to connect with VCDS has agreed to another attempt next week.  I guess I'll just have to wait and see if they are serious or just blowing me off.

Early VR6s will have the 2x2 connector, later the 16 pin OBDII purple one.  The Engine ECU and the ABS ECU are the only two options you will have once connected.  The Ross Tech site for VCDS will cover any port adjustments you might have to make.

I'm assuming MooG60 has a G60, not sure if they ever had 16 pin?

I have ancient VAGCOM on ancient laptop. James used this to connect to his Campaign 2 x 2 successfully? 

I also have current VCDS - never used it with 2 x 2

And VAS1551 clunky lol, bought for nostalgia rather than function

VAS1551!! Is that the one that can print a receipt from some till roll with cryptic fault codes (and probably how much it will cost to fix at the VAG dealer)?

Yeah, the G60s would be 2x2, to be honest, for early ones I would doubt that there is much to be interrogated - I know that my 8v Digifant Golf (PB) from 1990 did not have any diagnostics even though it was largely run by the ECU.

The US models had additional diagnostic features to assist with meeting Californian emissions control standards, so don't go by the Bentley as that covers only US G60 models  -  you'llbe unlikely to find all the same options on a UK G60.
