Spark plugs

Recommended Posts

OK have spent ages trawling through previous posts but cannae find the answer to this one

Are platinum/iriduim plugs an absolute necessity for the 1995 VR6 engine or are standard plugs OK?

Anybody gotta pic of the platinum plug head? Does it have a tiny electrode like the iridium one?

cheers

i used the standard NGK ones prior to getting my schrick fitted then i went to NGK iridiums............as the standard plugs are good for 20k and cost less than the platinum ones which are good for 40k

Yup, the standard plugs are fine. The only advantage to the platnium plugs is that they last longer (good if you've got a Shrick!)

I discovered at the weekend that the plugs in mine were completely wrong, installed by the "specialist" who fitted the new cylinder head last year !! The engine was pinking like mad, and I was pleased to have got to the bottom of the problem. The correct specification is 10100035AA; I bought a set of Beru plugs to this specification, 4 side electrode, so-called surface discharge type. They were RUBBISH. The engine had a huge power loss and a total inability to rev beyond 3500 in top gear. Fortunately my supplier Murray Macdonald in Hatfield, is an understanding type, and he exchanged them at no cost for a set of single electrode Bosch plugs. The result is a clean and smooth running engine, and no pinking.

Best wishes

The general advice on VR spark plugs is to stick to the NGK ones as supplied by the dealer.. optionally get the same-spec NGK platinum ones.

VR6s don't like triple or quadruple electrode plugs. Single or doubles only.

I'm running bosch twins in mine and it seems to get on with those.

I just bought the platinum ones for my service (NGK from the dealer) but must admit I have had absolutely no problem with the standard NGK's - they have lasted very well indeed. Plus they are so cheap - only £3.50 each! I just thought i would get the platinums for the sake of being sure that I had the best.
