VR6 vs CLK 320???

Recommended Posts

That 30-70mph time.... I assume thats done in 2nd gear without changing?

Most likely. Another reason why the VR does so well in this statistic...

Yeah thats what I thought - but to hit 70mph in 2nd gear you would be pretty much sitting on the red line?

That 30-70 time never really impressed me, I didn't realise how fast it really was. I just remember the stats on the Lotus Carlton with it's 3.8 seconds 30-70 time, which kinda ruined my appreciation of 5.7s! Perspective is hard to come by in performance figures!!

aparently you can take about a second off that time with a schrick installed so i read somewhere :?:

30-70 THROUGH GEARS....... you wont get 70 in 2nd you have to change

Sorry mate but I have SEEN 70mph on the clocks in second.... it was in the red though so totally pointless

Especially seeing as ideal change up point is 6k rpm's

Hmmm.. the autocar report lists "64mph" as the top speed in 2nd, at 6900 rpm. Methinks our optimistic speedos are giving us the wrong idea, OR they changed the gear ratios...

And Jedi I can well believe the Schrick takes a second off it - cos you'd have to be in 2nd from the rolling start and the standard engine doesn't start to pull hard till 36/37mph in 2nd ... :)

pretty sure that would be an over optimistic speedo to be honest

could you get away with a rolling start at 30mph in 3rd then with the schrick do you think??

Corrado club says this in their VR6 profile:

Acceleration 0-60mph in 7.2 seconds

They probably got that from the 1992 Autocar VR6 test. Autocar said at the time of writing that they felt the car they had wasn't delivering it's best and couldn't get the time under 7 seconds. It obliterated the opposition in the handling stakes though

The factory handbook quotes 6.9 and that's usually conservative, so 7 seconds + would indicate an under-performing example. Iffy MAF sensor probably.

But again, we're getting into this worthless 0-60 thing again. It has no meaning in the real world.

Golf and Corrado VR gearboxes are the same.... only the Yank boxes differ.

Max mph in each gear can be calculated......

To get 115 mph from 3rd, you'd need 17.3 mph per 1000 rpm running at 6600rpm on 15" wheels.

I keep seeing different ratios depending where you look. I have them as:-

1st 3.78

2nd 2.12

3rd 1.46

4th 1.03

5th 0.84

Final drive 3.39:1

Anyone got anything different to that?

nope, I can confirm that ALL UK VR6 gearboxes (except 4x4 versions) used the same gear ratios... 8)

I though the golf got a slightl longer final drive than the corrado, I have own both and I definately thought the golf had much longer gears

*cough* I said gear ratios *cough*

Final drive DOES vary between golf, Passat and Corrado VR6 boxes... Sorry, should have made that clear before...
