pablo_vr6 0 Posted January 24, 2005 does the C share rear shocks with any other car? Mine is making a noise from the back and I can get a lend of a mk2golf shock to test as I dont want to buy a new one and that not be it. cheers
coolrado 0 Posted January 24, 2005 have you checked your rear spring top plates as they have a habit of rusting and falling to bits
pablo_vr6 0 Posted January 24, 2005 took the whole shock out the other day. top plate was fine, mounts were all fine. what else would cause a knocking back there? only really on low speeds and only takes the slightest bump to make it knock. really stumped. coolrado 0 Posted January 24, 2005 either the shockies or are you sure your exhaust isnt knocking on the rear beam?
Henny 0 Posted January 24, 2005 rear shocks are MKII golf...
pablo_vr6 0 Posted January 24, 2005 can move the exhaust in all directions with my hand and it doesnt touch anything :( this is really bugging me now
gibber 0 Posted January 24, 2005 Could still be the exhaust! You need to get under and look how close it is, maybe even zip tie a bit of hose to your axle to rule that one out. Then I would try a diff shox, but failing that it will be your rear axle bushes. Went through this with my golf.
pablo_vr6 0 Posted January 24, 2005 are the bushes a bastid to change? Im imagining they will be. good tip on the pipe/exhaust - will try it out. The exhaust was in to get the cat fitted back on so may have been hung differently.
coolrado 0 Posted January 24, 2005 might be worth getting new rubber hangers for the exhaust anyway. does the rear of the car ever feel odd while cornering or at speed?
pablo_vr6 0 Posted January 24, 2005 cant say it does no
dr_mat 0 Posted January 24, 2005 Old worn shocks can clunk, particularly when cold. They go a bit dry, and it never goes away unless you swap 'em. That said, they're not expensive, and frankly if the car's done more than 50,000 miles on 'em you will significantly notice the difference when you replace them! In fact, GSF sell SACHS/BOGE gas rears (OE for the VR6) for about £30 each.
pablo_vr6 0 Posted January 24, 2005 the shocks are 6month old bilsteins mate - must be a problem as it couldnt be wear.
Supercharged 2 Posted January 24, 2005 I take it the bump stops were changed with the shocks?
pablo_vr6 0 Posted January 24, 2005 they seemed in good enough shape like. and the noise is happening at 5mph so they cant be stressed too much
