No worries. How many miles have you done since the oil change?

16Vs are 'allowed' to use about a litre per 1000 miles. That would be from the top mark on the stick to the bottom.

How many miles on your motor?

Im having the same problem.

Its burning a lot of oil, and I've had to top up twice now in the last 1000 miles!!!!

I do get blue smoke especially when im idling in traffic, but I dont notice it as much when im driving.

What needs doing?

valve seals?

piston rings?

head gasket?

head skimming?

and of course how much is it going to cost???

Would a compression test tell me which needs doing? and would it harm the engine even further?

Cheers for any help.

Cheers Henny,

yeah its a 1.8 16v with about 100k miles on it? is it a big job? ie should i look into getting a specialist mechanic like autowerks or someone or would any mechanic worth his salt be able to do this for me?

Also how much is this going to cost me???

Its due a new timing belt as well so might as well get them all done together!!!

First thing first, VW motors use heavy oil such as 20W-50 so make sure you are using something close to this. When I worked for VW we used 20W-50 all year round and had no problems. Also, it is common for people using lighter oil to have the oil buzzer go off under light throttle, for whatever reason the dynamic oil pressure warning system doesn't like thin oil.

Common things that cause a loss of oil are valve seals and guides, seals wear out as they get old and the valve guides are brass and they do wear. Rings will also wear and allow oil to pass by them so I would give this a check as well. If there is a lot of blow-by you will have oil in the intake system so it would be a good idea to check for this. I would do a compression test on the motor and see what numbers you come up with, this is a good way to gauge the condition of the motor.

Cheers, Dennis

Update on this old thread...

Gave car to specialist mechanic who kept it for a few weeks and did timing belt, water pump, head gasket, valve guides, seals, rings and a few more things as well that i've forgotten, all cleared up now, and no more blue smoke thank god! Not burning as much oil either.
