I have also measured the resistance across the three coils on the heater resistor pack, it may help others perhaps

Thick coil 0.4ohms

Medium coil 0.9 ohms

Thin coil 2.7 ohms

All results with lead resistance taken off

I don't know if mine are correct, but it did all work fine. Hopefully it's the same as other peoples

Or, anybody have a spare fan?

Thanks

I do have the latest Webasto brochure somewhere. I'll dig it out and check against mine that is off the car. I remember looking at it b4 and thinking some looked similar, but didn't go too deep into it

I also need the part no for the blower fan. I haven't opened the blower/evaporator to look but I can hear the bearing is starting to go. Best get a spare one.

Great thread by the way. My A/C works, I spent £600 getting it recommissioned by an HVAC Specialist a few years back. It's not as super cool as described here though. When we had 38 degrees in Summer it really struggled to create cold air.

Surprising Mike. Mine needs regassing but it used to get super ice cold before.

I'll be changing the condenser to a smaller one (from a polo) once i can get the hose connections made up because all the corrugations in the original are falling out!

I think mine also needs regassed. It's been about 5 years since the HVAC was overhauled and the car has spent most of that time in my garage sleeping. She covers about 1500 miles per year.

Any idea of the Fan part number? Is it the same as a MK3 Golf with a/c?

I have my fan out the car still. The only markings on it are A52/C2.

I could happily send people pictures, but have GIVEN UP TRYING ON HERE ...

VA01-A52/2C-43A is the closest looking item I can find, but would need the fan blades swapping over..

Sorry not that Fan. The Heater Blower motor.

It's the motor that is similar, not the blades which look like a radiator fan... Although looking on ebay there are very similar VW fan blower motors that could be adaptable.

Good work there Cressa!  Did you have the pipes welded on to the evap?  I have a Polo evap but might need to have an adapter of sorts welded to it too and not really sure how to have this done..

The pipes on the mk4 golf evaporator are the correct sizes. They just needed bending, swapping over and shortening. 4 months and 4 different workshops b4 I found a decent place that did the alloy welding correctly

Finally back in the car. Secured and sealed up. A difficult part was lining it up against the heater directional box. It was catching the hot to cold flap, which I turned to hard!!! So lesson to all, take your time and you won't have to reset the dash controls.  Since working it out the Hot to Cold flap now turns incredibly smoothly.

There is however no way of securing the two units together, so I used a tyrap to hold it up and in line, some sticky sponge to seal and close the gap, then gaffa tape all around. A very efficient system now.  Fingers crossed that I can get it pressure tested soon and  that it won't leak.......

Be interesting to see if this converted mk4 golf evaporator does the job, especially after all this time and money.

I'm sure it will be excellent, plus it looks like a nice tidy job there.  Insulation on the condenser pipe looks good too - mine is the original and looks a mess!

Finally got the aircon guy to come round to my car. I made sure all my o rings were lubricated with  the compressor oil and connections very tight. Lastly a new receiver drier was fitted as he turned up. A successful vacuum test and filled with gas. Tested and all working perfectly.

Ok, so I have officially changed everything and it is cold. Very cold.  Here's hoping it lasts.

But the good news for anyone with a failed evaporator,  the early mk4 golf one previously mentioned does fit in the box, it just needs the pipes altering and shortening the bends at the evaporator. I had the pipes swapped over to match the old pipe set up and have realised this was totally unnecessary,  as I should have just turned the block expansion valve, that the flexi pipes connect to, 180° !! Simple.

Good luck to anyone that has to go down this route

At least it’s fixed and working. You must now be the OE air con expert. Well done that man. Shame you can’t go out and celebrate.
