Rams 0 Posted July 16, 2003 I need to do this mod at some point...... My mate had them fitted in his G60 but you could here the gage like it was ticking all the time and the louder you went the noiser the ticking was. A mechanic said it needed bleeding, he had it done and it still made a noise. If someone can re asure me that they are all not like it and if anyone can show me some close up pics that would be cool. I take it oil pressure and voltmeter would be the favourites on a VR6? Any advice would be appreciated.
stormseeker 0 Posted July 16, 2003 My advice would be to get some gauges instead :D :D :D (sorry - I just couldn't resist  )
W3RKD 0 Posted July 16, 2003 you can buy a genuine part from vee-dub for this look very nice and have correct colours and corrado written on the gauges too...
mambomonkey 0 Posted July 16, 2003 If you want a subtle factory fit effect, go for vdo's - they look nice and are top quality. If you want somthing slightly moire interesting, try autometer, - they do a massive range with loadsa different styles. - Just got a boost gauge from them that works and looks ace.....For all these, try summitracing.com, - usa prices and everything in stock. Coincidentally, - i've got a neat 52mm Vdo water temp gauge lying around in good nick, so if your interested let me know
Rams 0 Posted July 16, 2003 If I like the gage, I would like to find the partner to it, obviously for a different filed. Could you show me a pic?
Rams 0 Posted July 16, 2003 stormseeker, I did it on puropse!! Gage, gage, gage, gage, gage, gage, gage!!!!! Just you wait, I will be checking your spelling and be sure to get a fat e mail stating your error!! Revenge is always sweet :D :D :D :D
spoier 0 Posted July 16, 2003 Voltmeter is good but if I had to pick two: 1. air/fuel meter 2. oil pressure If the alt dies the warning light should come on, and you might get stranded until you can get a new voltage regulator or alternator. But if there are problems with the two listed above your engine is going to grenade..... for the A/F meter you will have to have a second oxy sensor fitting welded into your downpipe I believe. G60 0 Posted July 16, 2003 naw you can just vampire tap it to the existing o2 sensor.. or solder it up properly. oil pressure also comes on as a flashing light. i'd say air/fuel and boost are the most important to me.. being the two gauges i have. i just had a problem where oil wouldn't stay in the engine. the light came on, i drove home (about 45 seconds) and the light saved the day since it was an easy fix. although.. i do want to get oil pressure and a volts gauge. spoier 0 Posted July 16, 2003 Who sells the gauge mounting stuff for the cubby hole under the ashtray again? Or does the stock (factory option) unit accept standard 2-1/16" gauges? Skye
vr6storm 0 Posted July 16, 2003 you can buy a genuine part from vee-dub for this look very nice and have correct colours and corrado written on the gauges too... just so you can see what darren is speaking about
Jim 2 Posted July 16, 2003 Do VW still sell that original gauge unit, or are they in the hands of specialists & ebayers these days?
vr6storm 0 Posted July 16, 2003 Do VW still sell that original gauge unit, or are they in the hands of specialists & ebayers these days? AFAIK jims16v they're discontinued........but GPC did have them last year but in very limited quantities don't think they still have them now
spoier 0 Posted July 16, 2003 Yeah that's the factory piece alright, but it doesn't look like you can put regular 2-1/16" gauges in there, I defo want to mount an A/F gauge. I swear I've seen an aftermarket gauge kit for that spot somewhere. Skye

Skye VW also had a guage panel for fitting guages into for rhd and lhd applications.........this too is now discontinued and was even making silly money on e-bay last year and the start of this year
spoier 0 Posted July 16, 2003 Come to think of it, it is kind of nice to have that bin there for odds & sods, I don't think I want to get rid of it. But I'm not sure I like A-pillar gauge pods either... seems like they would block your field of view a little bit. Altho its nice to not have to look down to see them while you're driving hard. Any other clean (read: factory-looking) options for mounting?? Post pics :) Skye
biggrim 0 Posted July 16, 2003 You could stick 'em where the centre heater vents are. Mine is like this but I want them moved to somewhere else. I know the one on the left is a cowboy job (duct tape over cardboard) but I didn't fit them. the boost gauge on the right isn't so bad.
spoier 0 Posted July 16, 2003 That's a thought.... here's a better one though, I don't smoke, maybe I'll replace the ashtray...... Skye
Henny 0 Posted July 17, 2003 That's a thought.... here's a better one though, I don't smoke, maybe I'll replace the ashtray...... Skye I'm looking at doing the same to my C... I've got hold of the whole center bit out of a dead C and I'm going to try and make a mold with the conversion built in so that instead of hacking the original to bits to bodge something in, it looks like it's how it was designed... A mate of mine reckons that he can do the plastic injecting and make up the mold for me, but it may be kind of costly, and it'll be RHD only.... When I finally get around to doing it, I'll put some pics up (and I may even get a few more made and sell 'em on!)
