Next time you're gonna be in rotherham mate, just give me a heads up and I'll take you for a spin.

yeah theres plenty of people that will buy the induction kit

theyre bad beacuse they they let the heat through and that type of filter doesnt keep out fine dust /dirt ....basicly yeah they just took your money , i spose most folk think an induction kit will make it faster and they take advantage of you :(

ring darren and have a chat...he's approacable enough and im sure he'l try and sort you out

as for the chip question...the sns are safter for your engine , a chip that goes lean can cause damage ..and the tensioners jabba fit are frowned on by a few people

alot of people are also ignorant to these things, i only noticed a noise because im VERY picky , youd never hear any problems over the noise of an induction kit

like i say, it wasnt leaking oil eveywhere, and made what appeared to be good boost

i think the way they get away with the work is often the car changes hands before the trouble sets in..and most new owners have the charger looked over to be safe

goodridge.....i fully intended to rebuild mine myself, i went to the trouble of importing a rebuild kit and got as far as opening it up

in the end i decided there was too much to lose if i made a simple mistake, and luckily g werks were happy to take over

if you price up good quality parts , theres not much in it considering you'l have a come back if someone else does it

Well how much did you pay for your kit mate? and where from? I've been a VAG techy for 4 and a half yrs now and have some mates that have had a good one and a f***ed one in bits. Its no different to having anything else mechanical apart and putting it back together......

Here's a question for you then...

Would you strip and rebuild the air-con pumps ??

I think the reason there is not a full guide on the net anywhere is because no two rebuilders use the same "step by step" ways of building them. Its like anything one person does regulary, they adapt there own method of doing somthing. As the servicing was not reconised by VAG in any schedule's there are no "techie guides" from vag. 2-3 dealers are even sending them to g-werks now as they have seen the problems unserviced chrgers can cause and the new £2000+ price of a replacment from vw.

True.. No I probably wouldnt, but then it is not really known as a "rebuild-able" item is it?! And if was there would be someone that would know how to do. And no there are no VAG workshop manuals that cover re-building a charger. But..... How did you learn to re-build them Darren? By doing it yourself, with help from others that had done before.... It's like anything.......

thing is goodridge, im sure darren and all the other builders have messed up quite a few chargers before they got the hang of it

have a go if you think you can do it , its not super complicated in there, and theres a fair bit of info on the net

where do you plan to buy your parts from?? all the outlets i contacted claimed theirs was the best quality !!

i do have all the part numbers written down from the kit i got, if you want em you can prob get the bearings anywhere..although i dunno who sells pukka apex strips

People would be right in worrying if they`ve had the wrong spec timing shaft bearings fitted, they`re normally the first ting to fail anyway and it will destroy the chager no problems if they go..

Mine did sound noticable bad, I could have had a fooked charger if it had been left to the next service interval.. Plus Jabba rebuilds aren`t cheap and you don`t really get any value for money do you...

Yea I'm sure they may have.... But then, if I re-built the head or bottom end of an engine wrong, I would mess it up. Me and a mate are fairly intent on doing it ourselves thats all. It's an intrest afterall. I spoke to Darren about it at Ed38, and it does seem that there are varying qualities/makes of bearings. i'm sure Darren said it was G-werks/KK/and SLS that only have the best rebuild kits. I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong though. How was it only £100 more to send it to Darren then? Was the rebuild kit £270?? Basing that on the listed price of £370 for a standard re-build.

yeah it was about that i believe

Mate that sound an awful lot of cash. My mate has just bought a kit from holland for £150 sheets.... However if we are going into quality talk I'm not sure what level its on...

As i said to you before goodridge... you could go and buy the bearings/seals from your local bearing place but i guarentee you they will only be near enough.. which might be fine for industrial applications but not when rebuilding a g-lader... ONLY the best will do I have been known to reject whole batch's of FAG bearings before just because I dont like the look of them. There are also huge variations on APEX strips also some will cost you about £20 to buy but these will cost you your scrool in the long run as there actually a harder compisite then the ally/mag material the scrool is made from. If your going to buy a rebuild kit choose very carfully and dont scrimp on cost.

Just found it mate. I honestly didnt realise that kit would be so dear.......

So if I'm still insistent about rebuilding my own Darren..... Can you recommend me a place to get a kit from? PM me if you prefer.... Thanks

John

Unfortunatly i dont know of anywhere that sells a kit i would use every part from. The KK one is about as good as they come though tbh. We only had to change a few parts from steve's kit if i remember correctly

If only you would let me buy one off you..... Ok mate, well I'll have to have another think about it then. I have bought a hacker for the winter so the Golf being off the road for a bit is no problem. Thanks for the info.

could someone please post who's had work carried out by jabba and are pleased with it,i must get some sleep tonight!!!when i went to jabba they seemed like very nice people, but then they had no reason not to be,those who've had things go wrong what were jabbas aftersales like were they willing to help,if things did go wrong i would expect jabba to try and sort things out, i know daz spends some time on here helping us all out ,when i 1st joined the forum jabba were actually making posts on here too, where have they gone why aren't they defending themselves, i know i would

anyway i've decided we could do with a specialist a bit further up north, after plotting my route to g-werks with aa,250 odd miles one way, looks like it'll have to be a service and an holiday in one, best start saving

cheers for that, iwas just wondering why people who had work carried out by jabba and they were happy with it never bother to post?i'm with you about the horror stories i would be more than happy for my work to be carried out at g-werks from now on its just a bit of a trek,i think i'll be better of drawing up a list of what to get done and get it done all in one go i shouldn't need it looking at yet it was only upgraded in april about 3-4k ago so hopefully i should have many happy miles ahead

i agree they must have dione thousands of rebuilds but back in the day there wasnt much choice now there is, and when its a nice amiable man such as darren you feel so much more confident!

Rebuild kits:

After I had requested a list of part numbers from Darren last year to aid me in deciding in where to get my charger rebuilt, Darren promptly send me the list, and I can vouch, as seen with my own eyes, whilst looking him over his shoulders whilst rebuilding my charger, that he uses genuine parts as originally used and recommended by VW, and by loads of my mates over in Germany, where there are still quite a few rebuilders left, but only very few are trustworthy, SLS being one of them.

If you decide to use cheap kits, and yes, they do exist aplenty on ebay, expect your charger to go pop sooner than later. As Darren mentioned, bearing are not equal to bearings. Neither are the oil seals (they must be from Viton), or the apex strips (they must be precut, heatshrink-resistant etc; many an offer on ebay uses meterware, pistonring seal stuff, crap in other words).

I can send a part number list of the parts that almost all self-respecting folk in Germany use, and as it happens to be, Darren, too :-)
