veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted October 14, 2005 Ok so I havnt driven my beast in 2 days due to having no money. So I lent a fiver and me and my dad went to the garage to fill up. I didnt take my car as I was worried if it would conk out due to lack of petrol so went and filled a can up. AFAIK the can was empty and I filled up my car. So I went to drive it and WTF?!?! It took 5 attempts to start it and when I did start it again WTF!?! I put my foot down and there is no push in it whatsoever, it gets to about 4k and itd die and REALLY struggle, jerky as f***. Im thinkin maybe it needs a run round cos its been sat there for 2 days but no, its getting worse now and I noticed smoke coming out of the engine! Ill be honest I didnt oopen the bonnect cos I was scared to what id find, plus the fact im not very good with engines anyway. So i asked a mate and he said there was a chance they got their pumps mixed up at the petrol station, so i went to smell the can and im not too sure what it smells of TBH. It might be petrol, it might be not, but im thinking HUGE oil leak now because the car really stinks inside and i remember befroe the oil leak was cause by a loose pipe (which can be easily fixed again) So now my car is parked outside a hotel 3 miles away and I had to walk home :( Hell it could be oil leak AND diesel in my car ! PLEASE HELP!
samm_cvr6 0 Posted October 14, 2005 Right, have you actually checked the oil level? and where was the smoke coming from? Notbeing funny, but how can you not know the difference between diesel/petrol? diesel smells a bit horrible where as some people like the smell of petrol? 2 days standing won't make any difference to it, but it is very possible it is low on oil, especially if you haven't checked it? veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted October 14, 2005 Well Ive smelt the petrol, and tbh i dont find it really smells like petrol, whereas somebody else reckons it does. And the oil level was fine. But it does stink of oil too.
samm_cvr6 0 Posted October 14, 2005 How does the car run when it is just idling? does it sound rough and is the tachometer dead still or is it erratic? well, if it has been mixed with petrol/diesel, then you prob wont eve smell the difference depending on quantities. I would get the diagnostics checked first, and don't drive it anywhere yet.
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted October 14, 2005 Well when it first starts, its awful mate, jerks like hell below 1k and battery light keeps flashings etc. Until i get revving it and give it a min it seemed fine until i drove it.
Walesy 0 Posted October 14, 2005 If you were driving it with very little fuel in ..and have been before (( being 18 wasn't very long ago for me.. )) then perhaps a bit of sh1t has clogged up ur fuel pump. You should try not to drive around without much fuel because it can cause probs dude.
sciroccotune 0 Posted October 14, 2005 if you did put diesel in i think that if you filled it with petrol you should be all right after a good drive sounds like at most you had like 5L??
billinjah 0 Posted October 14, 2005 sounds like crap in the injectors whip them off and blast then with an airline in the opposite direction to fuel flow.
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted October 14, 2005 Thanks for the help guys, ill try some things tomorrow. Its just wierd that this has happened now out of nowhere since i put this petrol in. Was running lovely when mad-axl came down the other day
Walesy 0 Posted October 14, 2005 you could try injector cleaner in the fuel aswell...(( although you'l need to stick more than a fiver in fella!. ))
vr6storm 0 Posted October 14, 2005 might be an idea to budget for a fuel filter change............your existing one might have gotten clogged up with crud from the tank(even tho it will be made of plastic)
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted October 14, 2005 I know I hate putting in a fiver  But money is tight at the moment So what is my best option then? To clean injectors (which I have no idea how to lol) injector cleaner in the fuel ? (Nope, no idea lol) Sorry to sound stupid but I gotta learn somewhere
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted October 14, 2005 might be an idea to budget for a fuel filter change............your existing one might have gotten clogged up with crud from the tank(even tho it will be made of plastic) But it was fine last time I drove, surely it just cant go from normal to extremely bad in the space of 1 drive to another. Unless some w***er has put something in my fuel.
Walesy 0 Posted October 14, 2005 nah..theres usually crap at the bottom of the tank , when you run a car with FA fuel in it it can pick up the crap and put it through your system. Your can could have been running fine, then when you re-started it it picked up some crap and blocked your fuel filter/an injector. fuel filters are about £8 and easy to change. Injector cleaner can be bought from hellfrauds etc and you just whack it in the fuel tank with your fuel. (( it says use a whole bottle in with a full tank...so use half a bottle with half a tank. )) I think its around fiver. i'd maybe try them first semms your skint. vr6storm 0 Posted October 14, 2005 it could easily happen when the fuel tank is run dry and any contaminent gets sucked thru the system it could also perhaps be yer lift pump..........IIRC the 16v has 2 fuel pumps(lift-in the fuel tank and main-outside of tank) running on fumes isn't good for the pumps either btw
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted October 14, 2005 Aah thanks a million chaps :D Ill report back tomorrow with my findings Just a right shitter this because today I got my last of my work wages through today (£50..WOW, that has to last me for quite a while) now this goes and happens! veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted October 15, 2005 Well I got to it this morning and had a mate with me. First off we saw an oil leak (again ffs) underneath, but not a big one and it was hardly dripping while the engine was both off and on. So opened up the bonnet and it looked like and oil tanker explosion in there! This would explain the smoking form last night as the engine was hot and was burning oil. Ive since cleaned the engine now. But the wierd thing is that we cant really find where the oil leak is, and I dont have the money to goto a garage to sort it out. Also noticed that there was no water, could this explain the extreme over-heating?

vr6storm 0 Posted October 15, 2005 How much £££ is a headasket :( ? Just in case varies...........as while your at the head gasket other jobs could also be worth doing........such valve stems/timing belt/head skim( if needed)..........one thing tho..............NEVER skimp on parts for these..ie buy the best(VW or OEM) to give you an idea on cost...........friend of mine had his head gasket changed along with the stem/seals and also the head skimmed from memory it came to £400-£500 all in from a local German car specialist
veeDuB_Rado 0 Posted October 15, 2005 Oh my effing god If it is head gasket I am utterly fooked. I dont have that money :( :( :(
vr6storm 0 Posted October 15, 2005 Oh my effing god If it is head gasket I am utterly fooked. I dont have that money :( :( :( that price was for more than just the head gasket btw..........his was burning oil so he had to get the valve stem seals done too plain old head gasket using proper parts and proper mechanic should cost between £200-£300 tops i'd say..............obviously less if you can get a mechanic to do a casher for you.......just make sure you change the timing belt, use new head bolts and use a quality gasket set

mistrall 0 Posted October 16, 2005 sounds like some problems i had agas ago lol - might be wrong though - first thing i did was change the fuel filter because i ran the tank 2 low and blocked the chap up lol - 15 quid i think - because it was underfueling (running lean) she was running verry hot and burning oil :( - lack of power 2 etc - mabe go round the block a couple of times at night - pop the bonnet and see if the exaust manifold is glowing atall - (orange'y) thats the bit at the back or the engine that the exaust connects to - with 4 pipes coming off it - do this befor changing the filter though to save money mabe lol ... im no mechanic though so if im wrong lads please shout lol ,,, good luck
