Fifth Gear Unleaded/Super Unleaded Experiment

Recommended Posts

I'm finding it increasingly better than top gear myself, alot less egotistic.

Did anyone watch it tonight?, there was a really good experiment with normal/ superunleaded fuel, and Tiff giving a TT and 350 ZX a good ragging was pretty cool.

They tested a Renault clio, a Golf Gti and a Scooby doo with unleaded , Shell optimax, and BP ultima .

The clio showed no difference in BHP whatsoever, whereas the golf increased by 7 if I remember correctly, and the Scooby by some 14-15 bhp. Basically saying that the more power you have th emore you will increase by using high octane fuel. But I have to ssay I found it suprising that it increased by so much, I never really noticed better performance, just a better idol etc when using higher octane fuel.

It also showed that Shell optimax was the best fuel, 98 ron as apposed to BP ultima which is 97

So what was the outcome with the unleaded/super unleaded?

About 15bhp on high end cars

They tested a Subaru-something-or-other and it made about 235bhp on crap supermarket fuel, and over 250bhp on Optimax

Made no difference on some crappy renault they also tested though

I also avoid 5th gear, but the return of Top Gear last night reminded me that it is just Automotive porn with little substance or relevance to the real world.

No..i've corrected my first post...the Shell was the higher octane fuel which showed the best performance figures, sorry dude!.

I 'heard' that shell was higher octane but had more unstable octane boosters (so the fuel goes off quicker with time), BP is lower octane but keeps its rating better.

I notice a BIG difference at full chat using optimax, and also fresh fuel from an m-way service station is better than fuel I get thats been lying round for weeks at out local 'in the sticks' filling station.

Cheers

Never seem to be able to keep fuel in my tank long enough for it to go off!!!

I'm not sure if Fifth Gear is repeated, but it was a really interesting experiment, and like I said, it was suprising to see a difference of 15bhp...I used super unleaded in every raddo I had, and as you say, I always found motorway services fuel felt sweeter (( if not a little more expensive  ))

But its how long its been lying around in the petrol station before you put it in thats the problem

I must say, I watched the first episode of this series of Fifth Gear and wanted to eat my own face due to the horribly rigid and bad presenting skills.

In fairness though, they do seem to cover more interesting and relevant car-related things, but I'd rather read that in a magazine.

Top Gear is great for that nice bit of silly fun and eye candy which you don't otherwise get in a magazine.

It also seems like a bit of a stupid comparison using 95 RON supermarket fuel with 99(ish) RON fuels from Shell and BP - why not compare all the 95 RON fuels and/or all the 99 RON ones?

Just my 2p.

you whatjimmywhatsit? :?

They put all types of fuels in every car (( ie a 95/97/98 ron fuel )) and tested the BHP...testing every single fuel available would be a bit of a bugga...it was just showing whether higher octane fuel increases performance like it says it does on the tin.
