dtjames 0 Posted August 23, 2003 How much work is involved in fitting A/C to my standard VR6. I believe the "Storm" model has it fitted as standard and wondered if anyone could recommend a unit I could have fitted to mine.
vr6storm 0 Posted August 23, 2003 contrary to popular myth storms never had A/C fitted as standard......some did get it "after-market" fitted sometimes even thru a VW dealer(that normally contracted it out).......but no RHD UK-spec Corrado ever came out of the factory with A/C fitted as standard best idea is see if there is/are any A/C fitting specialists near you and see what sort of price they would charge.....if of course they would be prepared to take on the job
dtjames 0 Posted August 23, 2003 Ok - Can you tell me why the "storm" is so limited/valuable? What features does it have that my standard VR6 does not? How many were made? (and does anyone know how many Vr6s in total were sold on the UK?) Am I better off selling my VR6 for one with AC installed or doing the conversion myself? joebloggsVR69 0 Posted August 23, 2003 Storms have heated leather and BBS Solitude wheels, came in 2 or 3 colours I think - Blue, Green and maybe another. 500 were made.
vr6storm 0 Posted August 23, 2003 Storms have heated leather and BBS Solitude wheels, came in 2 or 3 colours I think - Blue, Green and maybe another. 500 were made. only 2 storm colours were available........mystic blue(storm-only colour) and classic green(available on other Corrado's),both were pearlescent paint finishes......the mystic blue storms had black leather while the classic green ones had beige leather(both heated),all storms had a colour-coded grille and BBS "solitude" alloy wheels, storm badging on the centre console and on the rear panel and a standard-fit sony cd-tuner.......in total 250 of each colour and included in that were 10 or 20 auto's(can't remember how much)...........NO MECHANICAL DIFFERANCES WHATSOEVER though as for value due to the fact of their "limited-edition" status and the fact some well-known journalist told everyone to find a storm and lock-it up in a garage as "future-classic" car status beckoned maybe helped too being a storm owner to be perfectly blunt and honest there are better deals to be had on non-storm leathered up VR6's(sometimes even higher specced VR6's too.......such as elec recaro interior and H/light washers etc),also most if not all Insurance companies class the storm in group 19 versus group 18 for the VR6........though i wouldn't want to sell mine
Bruno 4 Posted August 23, 2003 How much work is involved in fitting A/C to my standard VR6. It wasnt delivered on Storms/UK models oddly it was also discouraged as an option. You need to be able to spend around £1.2-1.5K if you go for an aftermarket kit installed. Diavia does one. VW did one as well, directly. The Corrado A/C system (modification of the Golf one) is as rare as hens teeth (whether they are VW or Diavia based). The option to install this from VW no longer exists on the EKTA listing. So you have to either make it up from parts or get a kit. If you can assemble yours using original VW parts instead of Diavia parts, then I'd say its a better thing. Most parts are common to other VW cars and are easy to source, the second hand versions usually being reliable and cheap on Ebay. The main problem is sourcing the replacement interior heat-exchanger unit for RHD with the mouldings for the A/C cooler. Alternatively if you know someone in Japan or another RHD country who has a smashed C'VR6, then you are onto a good thing. If you dont have the time, energy, and technical documentation, then get a Diavia installation from a serious A/C aftermarket specialist, (or they will bodge the routing of the 7 or so pipes and mess up your tidy engine bay). Thats what I did and I had to take it back twice to get them to get my engine bay tidy again. I also chose to obtain the European 3 rotary switch control assemby so that I could anchor the OEM air-con switch in the cigar lighter socket, correctly. I believe one or two others have dont the same thing. Jay and Guy (Corrado GB Club fame) have modified their cars to operate a Golf IV version (with Climatronic control). I understand that this is brill, but Jay doesnt really wanna do these any more. ...too much trouble unless one is doing this for a living, he reported.... Is it worth it? Absolutely. One cant explain it. But my family goes mad if its not working--- and they are all grown up!
