Ice White Socks 0 Posted March 13, 2006 Hi guys, Quickie on behalf of my brother who has an Ibiza 2.0 8v. Its been running rough for a while and wouldn't start this morning. AA have been round and says the timing belts snapped :? Now our kid was turning the engine over and it sounded fine- just wouldn't start! Am I right in thinking you really would **know** if you tried to turn an engine with no timing belt (I'm thinking all the noise of valve bendage etc) Thanks Mike
RW1 0 Posted March 13, 2006 Turning an engine with a snapped belt can sound normal. Take off the cam belt cover by the rocker cover and see: a) what state is in b) turn the engine and see if the belt is driving the cam. It may be that the belt is OK but the engine drive cog has rip off the belt teeth at that cog position, in which case the belt will be tight but it will not move. . bcstudent 0 Posted March 13, 2006 The crank wheel stripped the teeth off the timing belt on my mate's 1994 Ibiza 2.0 8v last year. It took a few valves with it. Your brother may be luckier.
Ice White Socks 0 Posted March 13, 2006 yes thats makes sense- which is why it happened when it was being started (max stress on the teeth due to intertia of cams etc) Car will be back here soon so thats the first thing I'll look for Cheers

Supercharged 2 Posted March 13, 2006 Stick another belt on, turn it by hand then start up and see what compression you get - could be lucky...
RW1 0 Posted March 13, 2006 I had one like this a few years back on an 8v Scirocco and the valves just missed the piston crowns by a hair's width. The carbon was marked but no more. That happened on starting the engine. .
flusted 0 Posted March 13, 2006 i thought all 8v engines where "safe" engines?
Ice White Socks 0 Posted March 13, 2006 Bloody Recovery Muppets! Whilst I have a lot of time for the AA guys- the local guys they call in are just idiots. Like I say the car sounded fine when being turned over- but the 'expert' said the cam belt had gone and he could tell thru the oil filler cap that the cams weren't turning with the engine (how he knew this god only knows as you can't see the cams because of the oil splash covers) Cam belt covers just come off and hey presto- its fine. Our kids calling them back up and getting a proper AA guy to check it out. Grrrrrrr
Ice White Socks 0 Posted March 13, 2006 Funny thing is - the local idiots had told the AA it was fixed by the roadside....
bcstudent 0 Posted March 13, 2006 Oh my God. At least it's likely to be an easy fix now. Sweet.
