Help my car hates me again!! problems found!!3/4/06

Recommended Posts

I recently changed my manifold to a nice shinney 50mm one, job went ok apart from a tricky stickey injector, fitted new gaskets etc, took it for a run about half hour and it was great running better than it ever has!!

full of the joys of spring i thought i would clean the engine bay up abit, sprayed the de grease around and washed it off looked quite alot better and then everything seemed to go wrong... the car decided to start running like a bag of spanners miss firing dropping revs and stalling....will not run for more than a few mins and that is with foot hard to floor at times!

ok i thought let it dry out so i did over night wipped round etc, today still the same, removed spark plugs gave em a clean still the same!

bought a new dizzy and new plugs still the same!!

havnt changed the ht leads as no where open on a sunday stocks em ... typical!

removed spark plugs again and noticed they where covered in carbon deposits??

Have tried the search hence changing what i have been able too....

does anyone have any other ideas??

what a great weekend i love my rado!!!!

 :!:

thanks

good trick is to see if its an ht lead is to run the car with each lead disconnected in turn and see which one makes a difference. also its worth checking you have not disconnected any wires whilst cleaning.

check for vac leaks around that fuel dizzy also

fuel delivery problem? im only guessing here but if you have added more air you ought to add more fuel - running lean can cause spluttering problems and no power with foot to the floor - been there lol (could be wrong) mabe take her to a garage and get them to check the fuel air ratio - doesnt cost alot - worth a try :) ps: what do the tt seats look like? lol

reaper1_3,

Not likely to be a vaccum problem is it bud? I've not changed my manifold yet but looks like it's very close to the ISV vaccum pipes... Is it likely one of these got knocked/ damaged?

mistrall, what was the problem with your Valver running lean mate and how you fix it? Mine is doing the same....

well i took it to 16vg60 jmr and he adjusted the screw on the metering head whilst checking the o2 levels on the breather pipe at the back of the manifold - i had it checked at anouther place too not alot of money and well worth it

Reaper1_3, I got the same problem with mine (2.0l 16v) yesterday afternoon. It started fine and then after about 5 mins it started jerking like a kangaroo when I tried to floor the car. I noticed that it was idling really bad below 900rpm and was popping from the exhaust. Also heard popping sound from the airbox. When you turn teh car off and back on again it seems to reset to normal and then 30 secs later it returns to a bag of spanners! The only difference is that my car has got a brand new alternator fitted on it on saturday. I had this prob about a year and half ago and I think it was the Cat on teh exhaust that was knackered. I replaced the Cat and Lamda probe last summer and it has been running fine since, until Sunday when it all came back. It would be interesting to know what the problem is 'cos I'm sure its the same as yours.

Sanj sounds interesting and very alike my problems you are right it does seem to reset itself after leaving it to stand?

well am going to try the cheap option first HT leads then i suppose the isv...

will keep ya posted...

quick question re isv would a golf 16v isv fit ok?

Reaper1_3 before replacing the isv could you not test it by applying a 12v current to it and see if it works, I did that with my which ruled out teh ISV. I'm not sure if a golf 16v ISV would fit. I think they may be the same as a golf 8v not really sure though.

Mt suspicians are with teh lambda probe, and the exhaust, i'm going to have a look at mine cos I think it might be blowing near the Cat. I'll let you know mate.

when i had the same symptoms - i replaced the cat got the timing done changed the fuel filter spark plugs lol , i would recomend starting with the cheeper options and ushaly they fix it - the reason i think it is the fueling instead of the amount of air exausting via cat (good idea though) , is because of the new larger manifold - mine started fine (ran great) then turned into a 5 tone truck lol after about a mile or 2 wouldnt rev above 3k - if you cant move the car get a chap to come to your house and adjust the metering head (easy to do ) might not get it spot on but would make her drivable to get to the garage to get it fine tuned - pm 16vg60 on here he knows about everything and is one cool chap! - dont fret though she will be running again soon lol

Could i not adjust the metering head??

I wouldn't recommend touching anything that you don't *know* is causing a problem at this stage. If you fiddle with the mixture settings you may just introduce further problems. Adjusting the mixture screw without proper gas analyser tools is asking for trouble.

Thanks I believe that is good advice wish id never done the bl***y manifold now!!!

yeh will probably have a further look this weekend change ht leads etc and if no better get the heep of junk taken to my local vw specialist and sign a blank cheque for him to sort!!!

coz i am sure it will cost me a small fortune to sort....

sometimes i really hate owning a rado! :onfire: :brickwall: :mad2:

bcstudent its weird I was reading your thread last week regarding a similar experience that you were having. Did you ever get the problem sorted? Was it anything to do with the throttle sensor etc. It just feels that it might be cos reaper1_3 is having similar probs after he changed his manifold. I put my suspicians down to the exhaust blowing from near the manifold/CAT end.

What would a blowing exhaust do to the reading on the Lambda probe would it result in a lean reading or rich. My suspicians would be a rich reading i.e lamda showing 1.00, because of the lack of power due to the ECU holding back on fuel to compensate for a rich signal.
