A big think

Recommended Posts

Well from a couple of months after i bought my lovely vr6 it became evident it was not all it seemed. It drinks alot of oil and smokes when you've been coasting down a hill and pull off. Symptoms point to valve guides.

I got a quote from a good vw specialist in stonehouse that knows its stuff, and to get a gas flowed head fitted i'm looking at £1295

From the same place i've also been quoted £1088 for koni coileys to be fitted and set up correctly. One of my shockers is leakin and it seems a good excuse to get coilovers and give the car a long overdue lowering.

Do these prices sound about right?! I'm mortified at how much money my bloody cars goin to cost me before the year is out.

Is it worth it? The cars otherwise very clean, immaculate interior and all the electrics work.

I'm no expert but the engine quote sounds about right if that includes bits. Does the coilover price include the Konis as well? If not, then that sounds a little pricey to me.

As to whether it's worth it, well that depends on how much you paid for the car, and how badly you want to keep it going...

Good luck with it,

Tom

If you just get the valve stem seals/guides changed it will be a much cheaper job. Don't bother getting a flowed head, that's where the expense lies, for little gain. Shouldn't cost more than a few hundred to just get the seals/guides changed. That would keep the cost down and allow some money for suspension mods, again Koni Coilies are not the cheapest, what about some FK ones. I've heard good reports, or Konis/H&Rs for about half your quoted cost.

that includes the price of the koni's too. I paid 3k for the car because it had a whopping dent in the rear arch which i got repaired for a few hundred quid.

I just want opinions on whether it is worth spending that much money on my corrado, and if it'll add to the resale value at all.

The fella said he didn't rate fk's very much. The h&r kits are about the same price as the koni's and he reckoned they would be better for general road use. He can get the koni kit at 600 quid the rest is on fitting and setting it all up right... I realise its very important that the suspsension is set up correctly but it sounds like a hell of alot of money to me!

I'll quiz him on reconditioning my head on monday...

Repairing the engine definately :-) However, the gas flowed head and the konis will probably only appeal (in value) to the enthusiast when you come to sell it.

If I were in your position, I'd get the valve stem seals etc. done without the flowed head, and replace your standard suspension with a good setup (but perhaps not konis, I think there's a whole thread on suspension options somwhere).

If you're not happy, then you can always change later and sell the setup you had on, and if you want to go faster, then you could charge it :-)

I can sympathise mate, as I had an expensive time with my old valver shortly after purchase.

Cheers,

Tom

Well i've already got the advice i was hoping for!! I shant go for a gas flowed head then. I was getting quite worried that i had a nail that was wanting me to spend over a grand on to get it right... I also think that if i'm goin to change the suspension i'll just go straight for koni coileys so i don't have to fuss around later on. I would like the option of adjustable ride height so i can cater for different wheels in the future, and i've only heard good things about the koni set up. Unless i'm missing some bargain kit out there that is, i did a little research earlier in the week and found that if i want adjustable rebound as well then they're all in the 600+ region :(

he should only be £200-£250 max for fitting the coilovers and setting the geometry.........Star-Performance a quality VW specialist this side of the border charge approx £200 for doing it all in IIRC

Agree with the others about the gas-flowed head. Not worth it. Get the stem seals done, and it would also be worth getting the chains done with a MKIV tensioner/pad (if they haven't been done already).

Which garage is it? Are they behind the petrol station? Got a quote for fitting some rear calipers which was pretty steep. Blake Services did it for half the price and have since done a lot to my car- been very pleased.

Second all the above really. Bugger all gain on a flowed VR head from what ive heard, for the money.

Is the head tired?

I fitted my own coilies on the drive in less than 2 hrs. The hardest bit is dropping it up and down tweaking the height just right. My FKs are not to bad but not as comfortable as H&Rs or KWs. The FKs use Koni dampers btw.

£488 to fit and set up the kit is way over priced imo

what you want to take your car to stonehouse , i would not there all dog lovers down there , he sound like he is filling your head with costy mods, pushing you into geting your car faster when headwork is only needed in the valveseals, if you had a 16vavler the do the head.

get em fixed theres nothing like wasting oil .

Hmmm this is what i had thought... So are the H&R's a better ride? I'm only using it for road use so want it quite useable, if its too stiff a ride i'll just get fucked off with it.

Yeah it is the one behind the petrol station, and i got a quote from blakes for the gas flowed head with him and it was only 800!! Think i'll be goin there afterall and just get the stems replaced. He's fitting a new radiator for me tomorrow so i'll have a chat with him then. Mines got a stinking massive hole in it :(
