Jim Bowen 1 Posted March 7, 2007 hi people lastnight my car started sounding different, (1995 VR). When you reach about 40/50mph i can hear a kinda droning noise, and you really start to notice it when slowing down casually while in gear. it reminds me of when you used to put cardboard on your back wheel of BMX bike and ride round thinking it sounded cool  its very faint tbh, it doesn't sound like a wheel bearing to me? i have just had a new caliper put on, and that has started to sqeauk/squeal as i press the brake
dr_mat 0 Posted March 7, 2007 You got grooved brake pads? Could be a stuck caliper ..
Jim Bowen 1 Posted March 7, 2007 i think they are normal pads, VW ones hope its not another stuck caliper

If wheel bearings are okay, check tyres for uneven wear as this also can sound like a knackered wheelbearing.

Walesy 0 Posted March 12, 2007 and you really start to notice it when slowing down casually while in gear. Does it not happen if the car's not in gear then?
Jim Bowen 1 Posted March 14, 2007 it happened with car in gear or out of gear car has been in garage now for 2days, they reckon it was the wheel bearing but its also having full service, 4x tyres, rose joints? (front suspension) and a cv joint on a driveshaft hopefully it'll drive a bit better now, these rose joints he showed me looked very wobbly, i'm not too clued up on what they do or how they should be tho
