9olo 0 Posted June 25, 2007 update- found the fault split coolant hose from throttle body to heater matrix [to fit late vr]. has anyone got the part no. to hand?? because VW can't find the hose on there system. :( sad news for my vr, head gasket failed on me on sat evening, put my foot down off the lights, into second and then.... white smoke from the rear of the car and rough engine running, cut the ignition, shortly after lots of white smoke from the engine bay as all the coolant was pissing out of the engine somewhere around the exhaust mainfold area, i haven't gone near the car to see exactly where the water was coming from. i assume the HG has failed?? car has covered 88k. Louie Lungbubble 0 Posted June 25, 2007 Sounds awfully like it mate. :( 4 to 5 ton is ballpark for a hg job.
Goldie 2 Posted June 25, 2007 Yip, sounds like a HG to me and agree with the prices, id consider 400 to be a good price... If you have the time id seriously consider doing it yourself, it is a big job but if taken a step at a time itll be very rewarding and youll save yourself several hundred quid... kop10320178 0 Posted June 25, 2007 hi if you get it done, get the timing chain done as well whilst the heads is off, it cost me £1670 at VW but that included clutch, timing chain new belts, cv joint, spark plugs and gearbox mount and a new battery and £120 to get the head skimmed in a specialist garage, it cost a lot of money but its come with 2 year warranty, the only ball ache was i had to collect my head and send it off to be repaired. jay
NottsCounty 0 Posted June 25, 2007 Before you assume the worst, check the coolant hose that comes out the back of the head and into the matrix. It's quite a common problem, mine went and I assumed HG....but thankfully it wasn't :)
9olo 0 Posted June 25, 2007 cheers for the info chaps, was thinking around £400, asked some of my mates but they are shying away from doing the job, so not sure if i want to attempt it?? problem is i need the car daily, so whould need to buy a cheap run around [£100-150?] for the time being . so would end up costing me the same or near enough. if i get the chain done then may aswell get the clutch done to, i think i'll just do the HG for now, to keep the cost down. can anyone recomend someone?? It's quite a common problem, mine went and I assumed HG....but thankfully it wasn't :) i was thinking it may just be a hose, haven't checked yet, but fingers crossed!!!! thing is i'm sure it was running rough after i saw the smoke, but can't be 100% certain as i turned the ignition off asap. swiftkid 1 Posted June 25, 2007 Well iv just done a head gasket on my 1.8 16v, i know the vr6s are alot more complicated but if you search around and do it yourself it might be cheaper than you think. I got a full head gasket set off ebay for £45 and the head skimmed and crack tested for £75 and then its just a case of cleaning it up and timing everything up. I would advise to research thoroughly before doing it or to get a mechanic friend to help you out so theres no bent valves or anything. good luck with it though!! kop10320178 0 Posted June 25, 2007 if you did get the chain done the clutch is half way done i only had to pay for the clutch parts at vw jay
corrado vr6 0 Posted June 25, 2007 hi mate when my HG went on my valver the coolant was pissin out of the exhaust manifold turned out one of the valves had been smashed off and caused a dent in the head luckily it was able to be machined out, hopefully this is not the case for you!! :(
Toad 0 Posted June 25, 2007 Get it compression tested before doing anything... I'd think about doing it yourself. You'd probably save best part of £300. There's a few guides online to doing these things yourself. There might even be a local forum member who could help you... O/T Corrado vr6 Whereabouts in Winchester are you? I've seen a couple of red corrados around but not as nice as yours. There's getting quite a collection of us around....
9olo 0 Posted June 26, 2007 went to my mum's to have a look at the car yesterday, filled it up with water....... and found a 2" split in the water hose by the throttle body. :D so fingers still crossed that's all it is/was.
RS VR6 0 Posted June 26, 2007 A cut hose shouldn't cause the engine to run rough.
9olo 0 Posted June 26, 2007 A cut hose shouldn't cause the engine to run rough. that's what i'm thinking, but from seeing the smoke in the rear to switching the engine off was all of 10 seconds if that. so i can't be 100% certain the engine was running rough or just the shock of seeing white smoke?? maybe it's me just hoping it's just a hose........ Louie Lungbubble 0 Posted June 26, 2007 Hope it wasn't a pressure build up because of a HG failure that caused the hose to split. :?
9olo 0 Posted June 26, 2007 right just ordered a new hose, will be here tomorrow, got a day off on Thursday, so fingers crossed i've got VR smiles again by Thursday afternoon....... :?
9olo 0 Posted June 28, 2007 New hose fitted and all is good again!!!! [touch wood....] got a funny smell coming from the engine bay now as all that coolant burns off.
NottsCounty 0 Posted June 28, 2007 Good to hear fella, next thing to check will be your engine mounts. I've snapped said hose twice as I can't be bothered changing the sloppy engine mounts. It will get done.......one day :D
9olo 0 Posted June 30, 2007 sorted out the split hose, but now i've got another problem, start the car drives fine for the first 5-10minutes.after that when you apply part throttle the car hesitates/miss fires, push the pedal more and it seems ok, also if you put it in a high gear with low revs it does the same, untill the revs build up to 3.5k+. it doesn't happen all the time though, it will drive fine 1 minute and then the next it will start to hesitate/miss fire again?? when it's not hesitating it drives like normal. dirtytorque 0 Posted June 30, 2007 once warm is it idling ok?
9olo 0 Posted June 30, 2007 yeah idles fine, same as before the hose split. but it's always had a slight uneven idle.
corrado vr6 0 Posted June 30, 2007 my valver had exactly the same problem after head gasket it turned out the lamba sensor had come disconected causing it to mis fire and hesitate reconnectoed and all sorted
dr_mat 0 Posted July 1, 2007 Well start at the top .. Coilpack/plugs/leads/fuel supply .. then do a VAG-COM, read the ECU for faulty sensors (perhaps a sensor got soaked and just needs to dry out?).
NottsCounty 0 Posted July 2, 2007 Well start at the top .. Coilpack/plugs/leads/fuel supply .. then do a VAG-COM, read the ECU for faulty sensors (perhaps a sensor got soaked and just needs to dry out?). I'd be inclined to agree.....coolant and water pissing all over the engine bay caused havoc on mine for a couple of days after the hose burst. When the sun shines again (If??) leave it all to dry out and then try again.
