JayGT 0 Posted July 14, 2007 If I'm correct the later VRs come with a black cam cover as opposed to the early metal ones. Is this purely a cosmetic thing that i can retro fit to mine? Anyone got one going if it is?
Goldie 2 Posted July 14, 2007 The late ones came with a black plastic one...
JayGT 0 Posted July 14, 2007 Yeah thats what i was on about, my car has a metal one that is pretty grubby. Don't wanna polish it or anything like that but can i swap the late black plastic one onto my lump?
Goldie 2 Posted July 14, 2007 You can swap them, i did the reverse and sold my plastic one for a metal one.. Its a different rocker cover gasket so when ordering state its for a late (94-95) one as they arent interchangeable. THe late one doesnt use the same nuts and studs to fix it, they are built in to the plastic cover...
JayGT 0 Posted July 14, 2007 Top man Goldie. Any reason i shouldnt swap em. Just want to do it for the under bonnet appearance really. So the covers are interchangable as long as you have the matching gasket? anyone have a clue how much these bits are from VW?
Goldie 2 Posted July 14, 2007 The gaskets are about 10 to 15 quid.. There are no pros or cons to either, the metal one looks better against my schrick, i polished mine but in a dull finish so its not too bling. If you shotblasted your it would be good as new and match your VSR nicely..
JayGT 0 Posted July 14, 2007 To be honest the VSR has seen better days! Might get it powder coated in black but until then the grubby cam cover has to go! Any idea how much the cam cover is?
Goldie 2 Posted July 14, 2007 No idea brand new but the going rate for either metal or plastic second hand is about 30 quid..
JayGT 0 Posted July 14, 2007 nice work mate. Car's at the garage at the mo having a certain engine fitted... i'll have a look at it when it comes back and see if the new one is in better condition
Goldie 2 Posted July 14, 2007 From memory the one on 'that' engine is ok, might be worth offering your current one up for a swap on here.. So youve managed to score yourself a pair of 268s at the same time...
JayGT 0 Posted July 14, 2007 Yeah.. good news travels fast! It would have been rude not to take the 268's really! Saw the engine today and the cover looked pretty much the same as mine... once i get it back a lil treatment with some Autoglym engine cleaner might sort it out. But looking a a mates golf VR i suddenly got all jealous of his black cover! just think it matches the engine plastics which i like...
double-6s 0 Posted July 14, 2007 Yeah the one on that engine you bought from the REALLY COOL bloke is a bit ropey too mate. Powder coating is the way forward i reckon.

Wondered how long it'd take for you to notice this! I'll powder coat the VSR black eventually... maybe. for now though i'll just get the black cam cover and i'm halfway there! dukest 0 Posted July 14, 2007 Jay, if you end up with a spare metal one then let me know. I'm thinking of swapping to one but just not right now, with your newly started engine collection though maybe thats not such a big deal!
JayGT 0 Posted July 14, 2007 I guess you can never have enough engines lying around!! If I do have a spare cam cover lying around I'll let you know mate. My old lump was going to go in a mates golf but he wants to go OBD2... So I might have a lump for sale soon!!
KieranM 0 Posted July 15, 2007 The late ones came with a black plastic one... My 95 vr has a metal one, does this mean it may have been changed? I also heard that the plastic ones hide some noise somehow?!
