Had a good tinkering with the Daily this morning fitting some new Bilstein B4 dampers on the rear. Jim's old Koni's finally gave up

Very pleased with the condition of the arches too which look great considered they are 23 years old 6b5e92344d3e9a421e6166d212d82ab2.jpgb62ff9c0308e40f32c44c217447902bd.jpgf0dce325025a7f5211fe8a1fcf27f590.jpg781261bffb700b1f79cc7f1c0f32aded.jpgae001a9728f57418f16d2f7331ea84e7.jpg82e6eabebdc945068293ff1ac924b137.jpg

A little tinker with the 8v again today to change the track rod ends.

One was totally shot so did them both for good measure anyway.

Was a nice little job that took an hour maximum.

Strongly recommend getting one of the Clarkes ball joint tools first though. Absolutely brilliant piece of kit right up there with the irwin bolt grippers

Well just waiting for the call of Corrado Doom from my local garage as I think the Head Gasket has gone and with 185k on the clock it probably isn't worth fixing it.

It's been the best of the 8v's I've had though so a shame really. I don't have time or want to have a go myself at this time of year so if it's going to be costly i'll probably break it :(

Ah, you should give it a go rather than breaking it if it's in otherwise decent nick. 8v head gaskets are an easy job - I did one on my Golf with the engine in in half a day. Best to do the timing belt and check the water pump as well at the same time.

I know and if it was summer I would probably do it.

Cost is around the £650 area including all bolts gaskets a new pump and cambelt etc too.

Not sure what to do but mileage is putting me off saving it.

Such a shame to break it. You could always use the black one as a daily!
Lol yeah yeah.

Amazing Kip. What paint did you use?

I use Halfords Caliper Spray, I've used it for a few years now and has a good finish to it that makes it look almost factory finish rather than the foilatec stuff I used to use that left brush marks etc.

It seems to last a couple of years before needing doing again but bear in mind I don't use the car much lol!

I did the discs with it too and mask off the middle brake surface and cut an edge around it so the edges of the disc get covered too which helps with corrosion etc.

I do a couple of thin layers to the discs to build it up and then leave for a day or so before driving which then takes off the remaining bits of paint around the edge to then look a neat line around the disc. :)

Another job added to the long list - those calipers look 'sparkly' brand new!! Nice one.

It sometimes surprises me just how good some of Halfords' products actually are, plus they do a decent trade discount :-)
