Awesome GTI's Diagnosis - Price Update!

Well after getting the car dragged to Awesome GTI, they've come back with a list of things that needs doing. They can't get a price for anything til Monday for obvious reasons! Any ideas for this lot? Some I already have a vague idea.

 

New MAF sensor. (£230ish from VW Dealer?)

ECU Speed Sensor (Haven't a clue)

Blue temp sensor (£10)

Brake Caliper (£50 already bought)

 

They also said that the plug had being modified so they couldn't replace the Lambda Sensor I'd bought?? That I don't get?

 

Any ideas on the speed sensor? Thats the big mystery price wise for me?

As for the speedo sensor,go to any car breaker and find any 02A 'box and whip it off,the sensors are all the same.

I take it they have just had your car in and code read it??....

 

Is it a VR6?

If so most MAF's are now less than £100 from VAG.

The engine speed sensor fault code will come up if the engine is not running.... so you may not need one of them. i seem to remember they are around £100 if you really do need it.

They lambda thing..... someone has probably at one time fitted a cheap universal sensor, these usually mean cutting off the original plug so it may no longer be possible to plug one straight in.

So what is the actual fault that made you take it on or was it just a service??

 

tbh I'm not sure about Awesome GTI - a specialist should easily be able to repair a lambda plug back to factory and it's a common problem on a corrado for these to break from sloppy engine mounts...

 

The MAF is £150 exchange from a Bosch dealer and takes the same time to fit as the BTS (5mins)

 

As above the speedsensor will be what they got with VAGCOM - either the crank or cam sensor but the crank always comes up with the engine not running - I assume they know this (!) and the car would run if it's dead (could be intermittent tho)

 

The cam sensor (G40) is also known as a speedsensor and the engine will run ok without this but loose sequential injection and therefore run about 30bhp down

 

Could really do with the fault code printout for more info mate if you feel like your getting messed around!

This is the one I did before it went it. I had to get it to Awesome because I arrived in Warrington on Xmas day on the back of an AA truck with a seized caliper! Awesome are only 7 miles away.

Yeah i'd change the CTS, MAF and sort the Lambda out

 

Not sure about the speedsensor tho, you need to ask them really...

 

How did the car drive before the caliper seized?

The idles being awful for months.

 

Occasionally it would refuse to start and then be alright for a while.

 

I've being meaning to get it sorted for a while but the seized caliper has kinda of brought it forward as its at Awesome now,

 

Just spoken to Euro parts and he said that my MAF sensor isn't on an exchange program anymore as its the earlier one. He did say that it was a Bosch one though and poss get it from Germany as an exchange but cna't find out til the 2nd.

Spoke to Awesome.

 

The lambda is reading ok they say, which is good. They also said that the wiring loom has being modified from original and fitted with one of thats actually part of the wiring? He said they'd have to source the original last 4 inches of wiring from another Corrado to get the proper fitting Lambda back on.

 

EDIT: Apparently its a crank angle sensor I need.

If they think it's the Crank sensor thats faulty then that should sort your issues out...

 

Just tell them to order the plug from VW - a few quid with the repair wires etc, they should know this!

So they'd order the plug and resolder the wires onto the existing loom.

 

Do you think its worth me waiting until I get all that done to see how it runs before I replace the MAF? Cheapest MAF I've found at the mo (bosch) is £170inc VAT p/x or £230 with no part ex from VW.

 

Even I should be able to replace that!

Did you clear the fault codes, take it for a drive and THEN rescan? I know its too late but it would confirm whether the faults are 'hard' errors or 'soft' codes.

MAF was £180 and crank was £80ish (from dealer). TBH, it's being going on months and I'd lost confidence in the car, even as a weekend car I didn't want to use it. Even after this, getting it back and being able to drive it properly etc and not worry about it failing will be like getting a new car again!

What work did Andy (PSI) do for you last year mate? You spent a fair bit with him didnt you? How come you didnt take it back there?

PSI is just too far away (nearly 2 hours each way), The main reason was because the caliper seized in Warrington and Awesome are only 7 miles away from the in-laws.

 

Last time I spent a fortune (at PSI) was to replace all the suspension and bushes.

 

Turns out I still don't have the car back today! They still need to replace the Lambda probe which they originally didn't think needed replacing. So it'll be next saturday now as Ican't get ove til then! :(

Got a phone call from Mike (general manager) to give me an update.

 

As he was passing the 'finished and running fine' Corrado of mine it just cut out and refused to start again!

 

He got Jim??? onto the case and they ended up checking the engine loom, fuel pump (which was not working and then was working again whilst they were working on it?) and various other parts, bearing in mind that several sensors including the £220 MAF sensor had already being replaced!

 

As luck would have it (at least for me) another VR6 Corrado turned up with a blown headgasket and a failed clutch, meaning some swapsies for testing purposes only was possible!

 

On a hunch he swapped the ECU over and since then it's being faultless and in Jims words 'absolutely flies' now! 8)

 

They've sourced another ECU and fit it (between £100-£150) which is fine, but my next question was "if this thing is telling you whats wrong is faulty in itself, could it actually mean that the sensors are in fact fine and the ECU was reading them wrong?"

 

A bit of testing later using my original MAF, and it's running perfectly! So although its costing me another £100-£150 for the ECU I no longer need to spend £220-£250 on the MAF etc as it's fine!

 

So, looks like its properly sorted now but it's being a pain and would explain why its taken so long for various garages (going on about a year now!) to figure out whats going on.

The next test would be to put the original ECU back in to make sure it wasn't corroded terminals that was the problem, LOL! :lol:

 

In all seriousness though, problems like that can be a royal pain in the arse to diagnose and people rarely consider the ECU as they're generally reliable. Thank god that knackered Rado turned up when it did!
