Any suggestions for a MONSTER to thrash round a field?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've been looking into getting a car for track days, but clearly this is going to be ridiculously expensive.

I have a mate whose a farmer though, and I'm hoping to persuade him to join me and another mate in setting up our own (mostly comedy) rally series. Basically, just marking out different tracks in a field and then nailing it round in bangers. We're talking about setting ourselves a £200 buying limit (although more can be spent afterwards on "tuning") I don't think this is really feasible though. I'd love to get a battered Rado, so if anyone has a rusty old one lying around that they want to donate for some magic beans then let me know...

Otherwise, have just done a search on autotrader and have found these:

1989 BMW 5 SERIES 535i 4dr Saloon, 3430 cc - £500

1992 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 1.8 GL 5dr Hatchback - £150

RENAULT Laguna 1.8 RN - £200

1997 P Reg FORD Escort 1.8 Si - £200

1994 RENAULT 19 RSi 5dr Hatchback - £350

Most of these appear to deserve being taken into a field and destroyed quite quickly. I'm wanting the power of the BMW, as the rest are a bit weedy, but no doubt replacement parts might be a pain to get. Does anyone have any experience of this type of thing? This will be a definite budget project. The plan is to strip them out, make them a bit safer (roll cages, fire extinguishers, etc.) then add ludicrously big wings being welded on for no good reason

Any repairs would be with parts from scrappies. Is getting these harder for particular makes, etc?

Lol.

My mate and I acquired a mk2 fiesta and abused the crap out of that round my parents farm until we ripped driveshafts out of the gearbox. Then we towed it around upside down. Don't worry about power, get a one make series going, all feistas or something. and get spare wheels as tyres dissapear quickly....

Wow! This is a great idea. We have a spare field that's not doing anything, other than growing millions of buttercups. I could start Sonicriot13's Bring Your Old Banger And Rag It Around My Field Contact Actively Encouraged Demolition Derby! :D

Where do you live Sonicriot13? Most of Suffolk? Once the team is up and running, we'll come down and take you on. And let me warn you now, my car will be powered by angry juice :bad-words:

I put most of Suffolk Because I've lived in 3 different houses in 3 different towns in the last 12 months! Based in Bury St Edmunds for now.

Bring it on! Just look at our state of the art training ground! It almost seems a shame to tear up such an idyllic country scene!

sierra

sierra's, cortinas, mk2 escorts, bmws, granada's, scorpios, old cavaliers/manta's.

trouble is, most of these rwd cars are now becoming colectable. i wouild have thought the easiest to get would be sierra's and bmw's

someone up north got space for a re-surgence in grass tracking???!!!!!

best bet would be a E36 325i,

The E34's are too big and heavy to throw around and most ofthem by now will have knackered shocks, top mounts and front control arms so plenty of shake rattle and roll under cornering and heavy braking through the steering wheel.

When the suspension is in fine fettle they are pretty handy but for your sort of budget i have the feeling you'd be getting more trouble than good out of it!

Would still love to spank a battered C round the fields. Surely, if all the people who are breaking them put in all the bits they can't sell (and are cluttering up valuable garage space), we might have enough to build a Forum Banger VR. Admittedly, we might need to get bits from other cars to make it work (front end from a Ford Transit, wheels from a steam engine and 4 pogo-sticks for suspension...)
