MK3 VR6? - Mrs B has bought one!!!! Pics page 4

Recommended Posts

Looks pretty good to me, depends if the chains etc have been done. Typical VR requirements would apply.

Cheers dude. Not sure on the chains. Will have a listen when we get there. Got a long list of things to look at, just don't want to be bent over on the price that's all. I HATE buying cars. I always worry about buying a knacker!!

I'm not to fussed about doing the chains anyway, I can enlist the Toadmeister for assistance in exchange for my services anyway :fondle:

the highline golf is the same power as the corrado isn't it?

you probably already knew tbh

Yeah, just spec and trim that is different. Heated recaros, AC, black pillar trims and wood 'effect' gear knob. This has the recaros and AC just not the trim. Not sure if they are heated though, guess we'll find out tonight :)

Nope! all Mk3 VR's are 2.8 174bhp! Highlines have Leather interior as standard colour coded to the car! So a blackberry one has purple inserts in the seats :) This one being black has black inserts

Looks v.nice in the pics I'd ditch the gay lights but thats just my 2p! Seems a fair price to me!

looks good man, chekc the usual vr6 bits as said, check the arches, inside and out, check around the rear semas for rust and the tailgates :? sounds like alot but generally give it a dam good goign over, o and one area i always forget, the roof! see if it has any nasty chips and bubbles, apart from that, good luck 8)

Sills are the rot area on the 3dr along with roof just above the windscreen,

Front wings low down and as said rear arch lips rot.

OBD2 will give approx 190bhp so not a million miles away from the 2.9 OBD1.

Looks lie a nice car especially with the recaro's

Well, we did the 180 mile round trip, and what a waste of time! :bad-words: I specifically asked the seller on the phone if the bodywork was in good nick i.e. rust etc. He said "no rust, just stone chips on the bonnet". Well, He must have been taking about another car or something. The rear arches were proper rotten with a bad repair on the one side. The side skirt trims were all funked as well. I'm right p1ssed off

Other than that, the interior was really quite good, leather in pretty good nick although could have done with some 'hide food'. The engine sounded sweet as a nut, some weeping around the thermostat housing and the LHS head gasket, but nothing that worried me. It was just a shame that the body was so poor.

Still, it wasn't a total waste. We have a benchmark standard, just want to find one without the knackered bodywork really.

Unless you get a mint Mk3 Vr I wouldnt bother, they rust like a mofo. My old highline was completely standard and was pushing out 194bhp so they are quick.

Bodywork is the first thing on our minds to be fair. Anything mechanical can be fixed, but once you get rot, you wont get rid of it. Of course the engine needs to be in reasonable nick though

thats a fcuker you drove all that way to see a shed stu

are you only in the market for a mk3 vr cos i've finally rebuilt my mk3 gti anniversary 8v, stripped all the arches, de-rusted, painted and re-trimmed, it went into the bodyshop last year and had the two drivers side doors repainted cos there was a bubble in the middle of each door and the tailgate was completely stripped for the same reason. Absoloutely no rust, brand new mk5 gti rep wheels, all that remains is for me to refit the rear bumper and exhaust, fit the new vag drivers seat bolster, the red trim strips in the front and rear bumpers and new pressed uk legal plates and its ready to be mot'd and go for sale, not a bad little car with a piper cam, decat, superchip and k&N but certainly no match for a VR :( but being a modded 5 door its a bit different!

Damn beat me to it I was going to suggest yours!

Stu sorry to hear about your wasted trip but a good bench-mark and souind like a good process to learnt what to look out for too!

We drover 200+ miles with a mate to look at a "mint" Baywindow couple years ago with some mates who were in the market. Sounded ideal, old boy owner (80!!) since new, full VAG and specialist S/H... got there to find the "specialist" had nailed at least 2 sets of arches over each other on each corner it in it's life (N/S rear actually had 4 sets overlaid!), and some of worst "Blind-man" welding on the chassis too, looked like a goose had been very ill under there! :bad-words:

Still gave my mate a good lesson on a bad one and where to look out for.

I remember flying to Gatwick to pick up a rado that I had been assured had a 'mint' shell - I had rung the guy up twice just to confirm that the bodywork was mint as that's all I was interested in and he kept assuring me it was, I got off the plane and was picked up by this piece of scum in the car and there wasn't a straight panel on it, the N/S rear quarter was stoved in and it was all just generally tatty. I'd landed myself in a right pickle being in Gatwick with no way of getting back to Cornwall.

I still cant believe how much of a liar this guy was, it really made me realise that unfortunately you cant trust anyone anymore - a real shame tbh but i've always liked to think that what goes around comes around, i'm sure he'll get his comeuppance

I would have offered him £850 cash for it stating the reasons- namely it would cost you £1500 to get te chains done and another £1000 for the rust etc. Would be worth a try if he's been cheeky enough to misrepresent the car. Yeti? your Golf does look very nice - how much are you looking for?

Oh yeah, I'd report the Ad as it does claim Immaculate body work! :bad-words:

It might well do that Jon. Just a total waste of an evening really

Yeti, your motor does look nice, unfortunately Mrs B has set her mind on a VR and 3 door

I have recently bought myself a Highline VR as a daily. I knew what I wanted and was just really fortunate that the first one I looked at pretty much ticked the right boxes. It is also low miles and was a very good price. Its not mint though, and there’s a small ding on the front panel beneath the VW badge that I’ve got to fix, the Solitudes are in a bad way and I think its got a minor coolant leak.

Good late Mk3 Golf VRs seem to go for around £2500-3000. And Highlines are about £500 more. But, as you know, condition is everything. I also went for an auto, reasoning that they are less likely to have been thrashed. There are some nice looking VR Golfs on Pistonheads, but generally speaking it’s the age old adage that always applies: you get what you pay for.

Woohoo No more Pug-rot!

Doubt you can get down tomorrow night, but if you can, Steve at Nomads has just had his VR rebuilt, and it's soo damn quiet, until you give it a kicking... no tappety taps, no rattly rats...

Lots of VR'd Mk3's out there though...

If you come across anything in E-London area, will be happy to go pre-view for you if you like.

Cheers dude. :)

Just found the VR we went to see on ebay. He says nothing about the rotten arches on the ad, and its up to 1550 quid! I'm sure that the people bidding will not have been to see it, as he said to me last night that I was the first person to view. Someone is going to get a shock!
