mariojoshi 1 Posted July 28, 2008 Well.. Sounds like a really dumb question, BUT - a good friend of mine is over in the states at the moment and he's due back in a couple of weeks. I'm trying to persuade him to bring me back a timing chain kit for the old VR but he's asking how big and what the weight of it is etc... Might even be able to get a headgasket set too.. who knows what I can blag eh! I doubt they can be that heavy really and out of the packing, and surely not that big either! Obviously this rules out heavy postage costs to the UK(as most of these US places (fourseasons/MJM etc) seem to ship free to most places in the US) and possibly even the customs charges?! SO... who's the brightest sparkplug in the corradoforum's cylinder head then eh? ;) Thanks all, Josh
boost monkey 0 Posted July 28, 2008 If by Timing Chain Kit you mean: Chain - upper and lower, Tensioner - upper and lower, Guide - upper and lower then my guess is 2.15 Kg

dinkus 10 Posted July 28, 2008 Size wise - not all that big. There's a pic of what's included on the Four Season site here - http://www.fourseasontuning.com/?product=14# The guides are just plastic and thus not very heavy, but the chains and tensioners are pretty much solid metal so a little on the weighty side. For size reference - the tensioner bolt (brass bit inside the chain in the pic) is about 10cm long. I'd say they're more like 4kg total weight though... boost monkey 0 Posted July 28, 2008 VWSpares lists them as 2.15 KG when you checkout hence my "guess" :salute:
dinkus 10 Posted July 28, 2008 VWSpares lists them as 2.15 KG when you checkout hence my "guess" :salute: Cheater  Edit: And that doesn't include the tensioner bolt, which is fairly hefty... so I'd go for more like 2.75kg :D ...assuming that you'd want to go with the Mk4 setup, rather than the slightly crapper standard Corrado setup... mariojoshi 1 Posted July 28, 2008 Hehe, some amusing replies there, Thank you good fellows. That's plenty of info to be getting on with. I'm actually surprised they weigh that much, I mean.... I know they take a lot of load, just somehow don't look that heavy! Another thing I noticed (at the London Motorshow) is that the Subaru boxxer engine is dual chain driven, that must be a pain after a lot of mileage! Twice as many guides and tensioners to replace! Toad 0 Posted July 28, 2008 It's only really the chains, bolt and lower tensioner that weigh anything. The tensioner bolt is 27mm and fairly hefty, hence the weight.
