Not changing the pistons then?

Not sure how tired yours currently is but if spark plugs 1 and 6 get oily over time, budget for a rebore / pistons. I don't like putting new rings onto old pistons and bores personally, unless the cylinders are in exceptional condition, but it's up to you how far you take the rebuild obviously :D

You seem to like your 12V engine, but if it were me, I wouldn't bother rebuilding it. I would drop in a 2.8 24V which can be had for £600 with ECU etc. It's a far better engine and doesn't suffer with stretched / snapped chains like the R32 does.

More power and torque, smoother and lasts longer 8)

A new std VR6 engine will cost a lot - you could redo the head, chains & clutch for about 800 (I just did) or if you want a whole new engine then you can have one for £2000 for Vege (I think thats their name) who do excellent quality reconditioned engines (1 of the forum's users members mentioned it in one of the active topics today). If you are doing rings etc then I guess you will be reboring it etc (oversize rings/pistons?) and the cost will be vast (over the £2000 and all your labour on top). Or will you get a 2.8 and rebore it to 2.9?

Things like the whole head gasket set (Victor Reinze) and head bolt set and the actual chains can be bought far more cost effectively from GSF. Tensioners from VW and remember to user the mk4 golf top tensioner!

Food for thought?

a lot of those parts are vastly overpriced - the sump, rocker gasket being 2 parts that you can get for almost a tenth of the price from parts suppliers like gsf and euro car parts. any motors or critical parts i would get from vag, anything else thats simple i would look to save on. if you are keeping the 12v i would seriously consider what the chap above has mentioned - getting a vege built engine - will save you a lot of hassle/cost - bare in mind it comes without the bolt-on ancillaries - and at a cost of ~£1750, 12 months warranty and delivered on a palette for £40. Certainly would save you going through a trauma getting the rebuild done.

C2 offer plug and play looms - not sure if they will offer one for Corrado 12->24v, but its all doable for a price...

i forgot pistons actually... few things i forgot!!

i am a 12V whore really haha, but havent drove a 24V rado so maybe thats why... even so i think i want a mint 12V!! i dont actually need a rebuild, just want one, respray the engine bay, engine block etc and just have it mint :D

what are these brand new engines like?? are they the same engines or slightly different?? seems a cheaper option if they are the same...

I had a nightmare of a time having mine rebuilt by a so called 'specialist'. It will have cost somewhere in the region of 2500, way more if you count extra bits. If you have the skill to do the work yourself you could save maybe 800 or so. but it would be so much easier buying a Vege rebuild, with warranty. I was in contact with them when it looked like my engine was f+++++d [dont ask :bad-words: ]and they seemed very helpful and efficient.

The dealer prices didnt seem to be much more than OE, although I was probably ripped off by my rebuilder, either way I do not recommend Specialised Automotives in Worksop :p

A drive in a Golf or Bora 4 Motion would convert you - much smoother & torquier with 24v, even with 100cc less swept vol.

Ive done the whole 24v thing and its a great update on the car however if your car is running fine I would just leave it until there are signs of potential problems. Drive the car and enjoy it, once you start messing about with the car off the road then you can sometimes loose the enjoyment. Mine has been off the road for a month and I'll be honest if it wasnt sitting there when I got back from work I wouldnt be too bothered at the moment.

I was in need of a VR6 rebuild a couple of years ago, but was tempted by a 2.8 24V engine that became available.

I have no regrets - the 24V is very smooth and flexible.

Have a read through the Definitive 24V thread - you'll be convinced.
