top speed prob?

Recommended Posts

hi chaps

had a quick blat on me private road with my younger brother driving a bmw 325, he started to pull away from me at 70, then at 125 then he really pulled away, mine topped out at 125 and would not go any faster, is this normal? i have a 2.8 litre from a golf vr6 in mine, his car has a 2.5 litre, i assume mine weighs less, why did he beat me? i recently had my car dyno'd at 188bhp so i know it is running ok, just had a service including fuel filter. the only thing i can think is that my fuel pump is going becasue my fuel gauge no longer works, and my idle goes weird for a minute or 2 when starting up from cold, any ideas????

Ah, ok.

VAG-COM is the engine diagnostic software that can read out any error codes from the engine controller unit. The dealers will all have one (or equivalent), and VW specialists will most likely have one aswell. You can buy it yourself for not much cash (particularly given the exchange rate against the dollar now) - around £120 I think, but checking this is pretty much the first step with a VR6 engine that's not behaving right. If you've a dead sensor it'll show up.

I could only ever get 130mph (on the clock) out of my 2.8. yet the 2.9 could take it up to an indicated 148mph.

I've had 130/135 ish out of my VR, and it showed plenty of signs that there was plenty to come (still accelerating strongly). I ran out of racetrack, however...

I've had 140, and it would have done a bit higher, if my nerve would have held

146 indicated on a slight decline....with a little more travel on the pedal. That was on a public road, not an imaginary race track or private road! Are you guys paranoid that the police monitor discussion forums or something?

are you all taking the reading according to the speedo???

130 on the speedo is only about 115 in actual fact.

strap a gps speed reading device to your dash and see how far your speedo is really out! mine is fine up to 60 but after that it goes out by 10%

indicated 100mph is only 90 on the gps

i'd like to see the speedo on a car that is ACTUALLY traveling at 140........ woooh im doing 160

Yeah, we know, but the question was about the car running out of steam at an *indicated* 120...

fair enough, just checking..

Could be a tired fuel pump, i hear that if it is not giving enough pressure it will affect top end speed as not enough fuel is being supplied

your rolling radius is slightly larger due to your 17" wheels so that is probably why yours is more acurate.

my CRX went from 14" - 16" wheels and with the 16" the speedo was spot on!!

Mind you... PeteVR6 is actually running 18's so his speedo is probably faily acurate........or it could be slightly under reading so he could be actually doing about 130mph which isnt too far off the top end??

I've seen an indicated 135 and climbing in the VR. That was until some clown was travelling in reverse towards me (it seemed).

How rude - and on my own private M25 racetrack too.

Allegedly.

yeah but eveyone knows that no one has EVER hit theor top speed in their car, because every f*cking time someone brings up the question the answer is alwys "XXXmph....and still pulling". lying b*stards, just admit you were going flat out and it'd only do 130mph.

if you're running 18"s that's probably the problem. you've altered the gearing and now you can't get into the power band in top gear. trying revving it further in 4th first and see if that pulls you through it.

Jedi, yeah mine was 146 indicated on the speedo. Dunno what the actual speed was but if felt a damn site quicker than 130mph, I can tell you! I used to do those speeds regularly in the Golf turbo, which was GPS'd at 139.9mph VMax (due to the 020's short FD). So I know the difference between a slightly optimistic Speedo and one that's lying through it's teeth.

The VW book speed for the C VR6 is 144mph, or there abouts and I have no reason to doubt it's ability to get there, as a standard, healthy car.

I don't think my Speedo is as far out as yours but wouldn't mind trying your GPS sometime!

OK you got me - it was actually 200MPH at 8000 revs up a steep hill with a headwind and running on 2 cylinders with flat tyres.

But I didn't think you'd believe it :p

I don't believe you, because rumour has it you were towing an 8 birth caravan as well but clearly you were too ashamed to admit that on here? Therefore, you would have been doing closer to 186mph, tsk, fibbers these days, eh? Can't even get a BS storey right :-P
