How to save £10 on a OEM VR6 oil filter

Recommended Posts

How do you save £10 when buying a OEM oil filter for your VR6..... simple, don't buy it from Volkswagen...

Long story short, I needed a new filter at short notice so I phoned the local sealer as I wanted an OEM filter... £17.95 plus the VAT sir, will be here wednesday... errr I need it today so no thank you.

So decided to go to GSF knowing full well that although they have it on the shelf it won't be OEM... £7.50 including VAT..

Got it home and thought, that looks very much like the old VW filter I have just removed..

New 'GSF' filter on left, old 'VW' on right.

Top of 'VW' filter.. HENGST E300H... Note the 'VW' logo stamped in the housing.

Top of 'GSF' filter.. HENGST E300H... Note NO 'VW' stamp..

Yep, exactly the same filter, basically you are paying VW an extra £10 for a 'VW' stamp and a two day wait.

It's worth buying a stock of filters from europarts when on offer. They normally knock them out for about a fiver delivered.

I bought mine from TPS a few months back...gave me additional discount because he didn't think it was right it being an older car!!...and he thought it looked cool, paid around £7ish iirc...

I never pay full price for dealer parts and neither should anyone else. You're entitled to a discount and some deduct it without asking, others need coaxing.

As for the differences between GSF and VW, who has analysed both in a lab to see what microns each filter can go down to, and measured the effective filtration area of both?

Don't know? Who has?

Will those microns and surface areas *really* matter on cars of this age, if they're serviced regularly?

Guys at an independent VW parts specialist who dealt with the OEM manufacturers directly and they didn't think there was any difference between the parts supplied to VW vs those supplied 'own brand', but I guess that's just their opinion?

TPS price is around the same - £7.55 but they sometimes do a promotion of 10% off oil filters...

Why are people 'entitled' to a discount?

It's not really a surprise to find that about a filter though, that's how they're all made. Probably a few companies do the same thing for the same part as VW don't buy just from one manufacturer in most cases

The poorly fitted over pressure valve was a bit of an eye opener, effectively the filter would would run partially bypassed from the moment it was fitted.

OK, its a bit of a commercial for Mann / scaremongering, but food for thought anyway
