Rado87 10 Posted October 11, 2014 Hi everyone. Would very much appreciate some advice on my project! I was given the car by my uncle as it needed new timing chains. The car has 250,000 miles so thought I'd do a rebuild. Engine is fully stripped now, Pistons out, valves out etc. The problem I have is the pulley at the top of the lower chain has quite a bit of play in it!? I thought this was the oil pump but pics I have googled just show the pick up in the sump? Can anyone confirm what this is and if I can replace it? Any other words of advice would be very much appreciated!!
fla 9 Posted October 12, 2014 Might be cheaper to get a 2.8 and have it rebored to 2.9 to use as a base.
seanl82 23 Posted October 12, 2014 I think your talking about the intermediate pulley/shaft and it does drive the oil pump amongst others. The oil pump has a connecting rod that drives it from the intermediate shaft. Good luck with the rebuild, good effort on a high mileage car and sounds like it being saved rather than replaced, which is always a good thing in my eyes. :thumbleft:
Rado87 10 Posted October 12, 2014 Thanks for the replies guys! I must admit, I'm more of the opinion it's better to keep my engine. It has got full history up to 200k and ran like a dream until the chain tensioners failed. I think maybe the oil pump wasn't working to full capacity which in turn caused the chain to go slack. It has put the timing out a tad and has unfortunately bent 3 valves as long as I can rectify the play in the pump pulley bearing I'm confident it will be ok! Rado87 10 Posted October 19, 2014 Just a quick update. After removing the lower timing chain it became clear there was far too much play in the oil pump intermediate shaft!! After removing the shaft it turns out that the bearing around it had fallen away and worn away the block meaning a new block is required!! I can see plenty of 2.8 aaa variants but would prefer a 2.9 abv as that's what's in it. Can anyone confirm any differences please.?
Jim Bowen 1 Posted October 19, 2014 I recently bought a new 2.8 block with pistons. Think there is one left on ebay now. With the corrado inlet etc and I'm using some 263 cams I'm hoping it will make decent standard power or better. I thought it was a good option so went down that route. I have my old 2.9 block and another in the car if you can't find one. Although I think one needs lots of work.
Rado87 10 Posted October 26, 2014 Cheers Jim. Just managed to find a 2.9 abv block on eBay actually. Turned up Friday so when funds are freed up I'll start rebuilding it!! Can't wait!
