wheres the best place to take my 9a 16v diagnosed and sorted

a few months ago my 2.0 16v after running like a dream since id had it, decided not to start. Turns over and sparks for a couple of seconds then stalls itself. spent a few weeks swapping fuel pumps fuel lines coil packs and various other sensors and bits. after spending a lot of time and money the car still does the exact same thing. Had a couple of garages that would come out to me with obd readers try plugging in but none of them seemed to connect correctly with the car and either read error or no codes, i know there should be codes there anyway because the abs lights been on since ive had the car.

anyway ive given up and are going to borrow a trailer and take it somewhere that might be able to sort it as at the moment its just sitting on my drive depressing me evertime i look out the window. anyone know anywhere that specializes in these cars that might be able to figure it out, ive tried googling and had not much luck

help would be massively appreciated

If it starts for a second or two then stalls it sounds like an immobiliser issue. A good VW specialist in your area with a decent amount of experience would be your best bet, or just see if someone in your area will read the codes with VAGCOM for a few beer tokens.

Totally understand Tom. We see Corrados from every corner of the UK, so should you decide to make the journey South you will be in good company. Should your local search not provide the service you require, you will be most welcome

Check the fuse for the spoiler as that is the same one that controls the fuel in some way......spoiler blows and car won't start. Number 15 I think

Unfortunately you won't be able to connect to VAGcom to see whether there are any sensors that are at fault as the 16v engines aren't set up in a way they can be diagnosed. I think the only thing that can be read perhaps is the ABS but you need to make sure the correct cable adaptor is fitted as its not a standard OBD port. Even the VR doesnt allow everything to be read the same way as a modern OBD car would, part of that reason is that it is OBD1 not 2 and i guess the technology was just too new. Still, a lot of interesting things can be picked up on VAGcom for the VR, just not the same for the valver. Sorry mate.

 

Although Sean might have hit the nail on the head, read that being the issue on more than on occasion, even solved the same issue on my mates VR a few years back. Good luck with it though!

I thought all late cars had obd connectors as opposed to the 2+2? Obviously the 2.0 16v being a later car.

You need to find someone who understands bosch mechanical fuel injection systems - no doubt like JMR, but bear in mind mechanical fuel injection was used by a lot of different marques (vovo, saab were two) so its a case of finding a 40yo mechanic who has the pressure guages and wit to diagnose it properly.

 

A long time ago i had 2 valvers that constantly had fuel/ sensor issues, i bought and still have a book called 'how to tune and modify bosch fuel injection systems' do a google search for it and you may find some on line copies floating about...

Not sure, my '94 VR has the OBD1 and my crossover '92 2.0 valver has the 2 + 2...

My first Corrado, a 1994 2.0 16V, definitely had an OBD1 connector.

have you done the basic checks, fuel pump and ecu relay, spark/hall sender, fuel delivery?

The engine is basically K-jet (like a mk1 GTI or early 80's ford) but with limited lambda control and providing you have fuel and spark it will run in basic k-jet mode although you may have idling issues.

If it was running but idling badly then I'd look at water temp and lambda sensor etc, but it seems more fundamental than that, if the mechanical timing is OK (not jumped cambelt teeth etc) then find a kjet book and check the basics.

Guess that was updated along with the interior to go on all later models, still, from what I believe had been mentioned before on here what you can read on VAGcom from a valver was quite limited and not as in depth as the VR. Could be wrong

16v doesn't have fault code memory iirc, can be a pain to diagnose, even Stealth hated them, ke-jet was a real stop-gap to allow cats on the 16v engine until vw developed a full efi system

You are right, it was limited on what you could diagnose compared to the VR6.

I had this problem on my 9a 16v and it turned out to be the ISV and a few dodgy wiring issues that needed sorting.
