blown charger help !!!

Recommended Posts

Im a bit new to the world of chargers, Ive bought a g60 rado with a blown charger, no big deal as it came with another charger.

My question is will the charger have thrown any bits through the intercooler and into the engine?

Some folk would tell you to have the head off to make sure. I would defo clean the inlet pipes out and remove the I/C and give that a swill out. Check in the throttle body for any metal bits and make an assessment from there as to whether the head should be removed.

Do you know for sure the replacement charger is any good?

There is a big chance that you might have thrown metal fragments into your head and valves (sometimes depending on engine speed). The safest way to do it is remove your head and clean and inspect everything. Although in alot of the cases we dont find metal fragments or any debris into the head as the intercooler stops a good deal. DO the pipe check first and also have a good look into yout throttle body as you will find oil but keep an eye for any bits, use a flash light to see inside and good luck. Make sure the other charger is up to shape.

Not sure if it' the same as the G60 but on the G40 there is a little siv type grid thing at the bottom of the pipe going into the intercooler, this stops any kind of debris from getting into the engine but of course it won't stop tiny segments of metal.

danny allen, - welcome to the forum m8

Unless the "new" charger has been re-conditioned, I strongly suggest that you have it done before fitting it to the car.

As others have said, you must remove & then meticulously clean all boost pipes, intercooler & throttle body. To be on the safe side, I would also remove & inspect the cylinder head.

If you think about it - the person that you bought the car from would have been able to get more money for the car if he had fitted the "new" charger before selling it !! The fact that he hasn't done this would suggest that he knows more about any potential damage than he has told you.

Yes - much easier with the bumper removed.

Standard 78mm pulley has a metal disc attached to the back of it which covers the internal belt chamber - smaller pulleys do not have this disc & leave the chamber open.

Possibly an RSR outlet ??

if you are having a hard time removing the bumper you can very easily remove the left front mud guard and that will give you easy acces to the intercooelr which has 3 bolts holding it. As for the pulley to be sure you can measure it with a vernier for its diameter or use a ruler but less accurate.

cheers for the welcome :)

yeah i did consider this but the guy i bought the car off was a complete numpty and didnt have a clue what day it was let alone what he actualy had. He had been quoted silly amounts of dosh by various "specialists" to fit the charger and while he was considering what to do the car had run out of mot and tax so he just wanted shot of it.
