Front calipers , recommendations please .

Recommended Posts

Morning all .

I'm still on my original set of calipers . I noticed a lot of squeaking a few days ago . When first driving the car it's fine , after a few miles they sound awful . When I got home the rears were hot which you would expect , but the fronts were too hot in my opinion , not that I'm a brake specialist . They were dangerously hot . Maybe the pistons are sticking ? . The pads are 6 years old. I painted them red years ago , the rears have the Mk 4 conversion and are standard silver , so it looks a bit odd anyway . Seen as I'm doing the underside conversion I thought I would get a new set . As usual they are no longer made by VW . Which after market ones should I go for ?

Kind regards

Rob

Might be worth just stripping them down if you don't want to go mk3/mk4/TT etc bigger brakes Rob. As long as the pistons aren't too pitted, rebuild kits are available all over the place, and you can get the caliper blasted and zinc coated or something for much less than a new set. I think BigRed may do them already refurbished, but they're not too cheap from what I can remember. I think ChrisL had a set done by them iirc.

Thanks Sean I will look into it . After market start around £50.00 and rise to around £100.00 odd .

If you do go down the bigger brakes route Rob, unless you're planing big performance mods, personally I would just go with TT 312s. I must admit the Brembos look great but for the money I spent I can't say the braking performance is massively improved.

288mm calipers are pretty cheap and vw or other places sell rebuild kits. It just a seal round the piston and a dust cover.

I rebuilt mine without any special tools or experience. Never had a brake problem since.

Rob, I've got a set of 288's here in the garage mate, I got them when I bought some drilled discs for Stormy, yours if you want them mate, could also do you a set of discs (my old ones).

I bought 288 callipers and carriers new from VW a few years back, so they should still be available, but unfortunately at a price.
