JAM11E 10 Posted August 21, 2015 Hi All, I sold my VR6 around 12 months ago now. To cut a long story short I couldn't live without one. That being said I have just got hold of a Corrado, needs a little work but I love a challenge. The biggest problem is that that head gasket has gone. How much of a big job is this? I understand it will take some time but is it a PITA? Are there any guides available alongside the use of the Bentley manual. Many Thanks Jamie
Jim Bowen 1 Posted August 21, 2015 I reckon in haynes manual terms it would be at least a 4 out of 5 spanner job. Its one of those jobs where you start to think about replacing other bits while your there. Like the timing chains and then the clutch if needed. Agree with jim here as while your doing it make a good inspection of everything else to see if anything else needs doing. The Bentley manual will defo be the guide to all the settings etc I would recommend that if you havent done it before write an order plan of how you are going to tackle it and compare to teh diagrams in teh bentley
fendervg 32 Posted August 22, 2015 Quite a big job - there is a lot to disconnect and mark up with labels etc. so that you can be sure it goes back in the right place. Take plenty of pictures and copious notes! And beware of the famous "refitting is the reverse of removal..."! You'll inevitably find other things that need attention on the way to getting the head off, and then you need to look at the block itself, timing chains etc. It's not worth doing twice - you may as well do what you can while the head is off - and your costs will go up. So it's kind of a decision on labour time (probably your own time) vs the cost of the parts.
Gti_Jamo 10 Posted August 22, 2015 As far as head gaskets go, the vr6 engine in my opinion is fairly straightforward. I wouldn't worry about the chains or the clutch unless engine is coming out. I would recommend having the head rebuilt while it's off though. Valve guides and seals at the very least.
