marks2 0 Posted October 2, 2016 (edited) Well the worst has happened. Went out for a run in the G60 today. The timing belt snapped and my Charger is totaled. Edited October 2, 2016 by marks2
sankysvr6 0 Posted October 3, 2016 Sorry to hear that, when was the last time you had it serviced? and do you use the car everyday. Only reason I ask, is that I had my charger rebuilt about 3 years ago and done about 3000 miles since. So I have been debating if I should have another rebuild done. Jim 2 Posted October 3, 2016 It shouldn't need changing that often so I wouldn't worry. When was your charger last serviced, marks2?

I remember reading on Jabbas website that stage 1 service interval is 60k, stage 2 50k, 3 is 40k and stage 4 30k miles. Pretty sure you've got a while yet! Although time will obviously play a part but there are probably standard ones still going strong 25 years later.
marks2 0 Posted October 3, 2016 (edited) The charger has covered just over 20K miles since it was purchased new from VW (£1500). It has never been serviced but was producing good boost. The timing belt has been replaced and was due another hence my initial diagnosis that it had snapped. I spoke to Troy (JMR) this morning and he suspects metal fatigue which makes sense since at least 1/4 of the timing belt is missing it's teeth before the snap. If anyone has a spare charger i'd love to hear from you... Edited October 3, 2016 by marks2

It's a 2nd car and like yours covers very few miles each year. The fact it may be metal fatigue makes me feel better as i've been kicking myself for not replacing the belt. PaudieG60 0 Posted October 3, 2016 Who's supplying the small belts? Ive run out of spares for the next change

sankysvr6 0 Posted October 3, 2016 Metal fatigue on a brand new charger with 20k miles on it? When did the charger get replaced and was your charger stock? I would have expected the timing belt to degrade before the metal.
marks2 0 Posted October 3, 2016 Metal fatigue on a brand new charger with 20k miles on it? When did the charger get replaced and was your charger stock? I would have expected the timing belt to degrade before the metal. It was purchased new from VW in 2002 and was fitted just over 20K miles ago. The charger and the car are completely stock. I was doing 70 mph in 5th when it let go. The car hi-cupped, there was a bang and then a horrid mechanical clanking noise.
VEEDUBBED 0 Posted October 3, 2016 I've got the two outer halfs of the charger, unfortunatly no displacer.

Jim 2 Posted October 4, 2016 Might be worth getting in touch with JMR / John Mitchell and seeing if they have any rebuilt ones on the shelf. No idea if they keep any spares for customers who have blown a charger. VW Classic Parts used to stock them but they seem to be all gone now :(

Jim 2 Posted October 5, 2016 Seems to be the same with all the specialists; JMR, OCD, Jabbasport all have empty shelves. What a nightmare :( That bahnbrenner is pricey but... looks to be a drop in solution so may really be the only way to go. Footnote mentions it's a fair bit louder than the standard G-lader.. I've heard some horrendous videos of aftermarket chargers on G60's which sound like police sirens... would hope it wasn't anything like as loud as them! marks2 0 Posted October 5, 2016 Thanks guys for the suggestions of the BBM kit but my car is std and I was hoping to keep it that way!
g0ldf1ng3r 15 Posted October 5, 2016 Thanks guys for the suggestions of the BBM kit but my car is std and I was hoping to keep it that way! appreciate your thanks :) i understand the desire for standard but unfortunately in the corrado world it just simply isnt possible with some parts take suspension for example, the majority of the components to build up the standard suspension has been discontinued with VW for many years now i would also suggest looking into the reliability side of BBM as from what i have read on here over the years the G ladder doesnt seem to be very robust & needs regular servicing & rebuilds, which are very costly themselves

Jim 2 Posted October 5, 2016 Ok.. then I reckon the best thing to do is throw the net over to German eBay... something like this: http://www.ebay.de/itm/g60-LADER-gebraucht-golf-gti-corrado-passat-g60-syncro-g-lader-g-lader-/162207195475?hash=item25c44d6153:g:ErYAAOxyF0pTikJY Looks pretty good. Get it shipped here, and get it sent straight for an inspection / rebuild with someone like JMR - then you know you should be in good shape.
