Heater Matrix - AGAIN!

Recommended Posts

So all the signs that my matrix has gone, had it replaced in 2011 and just dug out my receipt for the work over £500 for a £40 part. My question is, surely it should have lasted more than six years?

Exploded or just no heat coming out? I suspect they are filling with the brown rusty mess that these old engines seem to be chock full of.

just windows steaming up, they get worse when you turn up the heat. It's more than just condensation as it leaves like a greasy element on the window which suggests coolant. I might be wrong, it also has a very broken retro fit air-con system on it which might be something to do with it but I just recognise the signs from the last time it went.

Ah. Yes, that sounds more like it's blown. Mine just stopped producing heat.

Yes, it's hours and hours of work. Labour rates "darn sarf" means it's a lot of cash.

The cheap ones don't last long at all - go for a Valeo as above. One problem that can happen is that if the car overheats or there are other cooling issues, even a relatively new matrix can get damaged and crack.

If you do a search there are people who have managed to change it with the dash in place !

Mines blown but as I only use in the summer no need for heat so I bypassed it.

When I sell the car I will give the new owner the new matrix LoL

Yes I've read about people doing it with the dash intact, but it's quite a juggling act. For what it's worth Stealth Racing have an undeniable pedigree in VW circles and they prefer to take the dash out - or at least drop it away from the bulkhead far enough to get in.
