seanl82 23 Posted December 27, 2017 Hi all, I'm moving house in about 6 weeks and need to get the car back on all fours again. My rear axle is off but I'm struggling to get the new bushes in. I've sheared a threaded bar trying to pull them in, so the correct tool is a must now. VW having just relieved me of over £250 for service items for the Passat want another £102 for the privilege - which is apparently an hours labour. :suprised: has anyone got the tool they would be willing to lend me? I'll obviously pay for delivery to me and back, as well as some beer tokens! Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll pay VW if it comes to it, but I'm a little shocked just how much they want! Cheers all!
Geeba 0 Posted December 27, 2017 I did the rears on my MK2 GTI... From memory we used something along the lines of these, with various sockets, metal plate, and bearings as press tools. https://www.screwfix.com/p/hilka-pro-craft-reversible-gear-puller-4-100mm/12510 But the axle was on the floor and not in the car
Dox 23 Posted December 27, 2017 (edited) I did my mk2 with threaded bar and a piece of 4 inch steam pipe (slightly crushed) too, tensioned followed by a tap with a hammer and repeat x lots. I cleaned out the orifaces and lubed the bushes too to help them home. If the axle is off the car a normal hydraulic press should do the job also? seanl82 23 Posted December 27, 2017 Thanks gents. I've tried a few times and as mentioned, the threaded bar just pinged and snapped in half - twice! I've seen the guides with the bearing pullers but after buying a decent couple and cutting a leg in half it doesn't make much sense financially to me! I'll try a generic garage with a decent press tomorrow and see where I get from there.
