Sunroof - inital clonk/resistance on retraction?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I’ve put a new mech in and the sunroof is operating off of the motor (now I’ve calibrated it).

The only issue I have is there’s a clonk/resistance when I retract it - it drops down fine but then clonks/resistance, then moves all the way back smoothly. It’s all lined up and once it has passed the clonk it goes all the way back.

Could this be a case of the cables needing more lube?

Realise there are many threads and I’ve browsed but haven’t come across my problem. Stumped!

Cheers

Matt

Mine was doing that same thing on the left side, it was catching / pinching slightly,

the metal that arm thing is made of is so weak,

mine snapped in half.

I lubricated mine and it helped for a while,

but like I say it still broke.

VW used to do a repair kit for the sunroof,

the main issue I think is dirt and grime,

gets coated on the carrier where the mechanism slides and over time it causes it to pinch and slows down its operation, which if left can crack or snap like mine did.

I think silicone grease works fairly well,

just be careful when you're opening / closing the sunroof, unfortunately this is one of the weak points with the Corrado.

I've enquired about a repair kit with VW main dealer and VW Heritage, but it's still obsolete for the moment.

I was told though that the MK3 Golf sunroof cables are on the same part numbers as the Corrado.

Thanks. Yes this is a replacement mechanism for one that broke - one of the wheel things came off the hammer thing.

I’ll try grease but seems to be on borrowed time.

I’ve seen an Octavia Mk1 sunroof from the estate will fit with a little trimming of the light surround and a small re wire jobby. They are not scene taxed either!

I believe you can purchase parts of the sunroof from Classic Parts through Heritage, but it's only the roof panel and main carrier unit.

That's all there is available at the moment from VW Classic Parts at the moment, plus one or two other sunroof parts.

These are the parts that VW Classic have for now:

357 877 255 A 4CT £384.20

pastel gray inner frame

357 877 255 A 6YW £191.66

Grey inner panel (1993 to 1995)

357 877 277 £0.43

Small spring (1993 to 1995)

41mm length

10mm width

535 877 071 £121.65

Main sunroof panel (1988 to 1995)

357 877 255 A S02 £331.69

Light beige inner panel

357 877 271 S02 £209.17

Light beige inner panel

357 877 795 £217.92

Sunroof motor (for Corrado)

357 972 851 A £3.05

Thanks for the list of part numbers and prices!

I’ll have a go at extra lubrication. Seems an Octavia roof might be the answer if parts are this hard to come by. Or leave it broken until spare parts are made again/or if not watch the corrado rot into the ground.

Once my sunroof broke back in 2004,

I left it as the parts needed back then I couldn't find.

Blimey that's 14 years :suprised:

VW Classic Parts are reproducing parts for the Corrado, but it's a slow process I think there's now towards 100 pages at Classic under the Corrado section. Some of the sunroof items above that I listed weren't available until recently, so you never know they might do another run of the repair kits or cables.

I was very lucky in 2013 or 2014,

when I obtained a working secondhand unit off a fellow Forum member for £65,

But like I say I was lucky.

And it's still in my parts pile,

until I have the space and time to fit it.

If I see or hear anything from Heritage or Classic, I'll give you a shout.
