Hey all, I worked for Volkswagen back in the day just as the last Corrados had been sold and released.

Always a car I loved and always hankered for one even.

I’m not at a Stage I own a couple of cars and had been looking for a Grey Corrado for a while and eventually one came up after replying to my wanted add. Only issue it had a blown head gasket and was in the Channel Islands.

I bought the car and got it brought to Stealth Racing and Vince was going to sort that and a couple of other things.

Unfortunately I had been ripped off the head gasket that I was told had just went a couple of months before appears not to have been left like that for a couple of years :(

The car does have some good things going for it, it’s pretty much rust free but has some scuffs and dents, 1 previous owner and 1 trader, only 79k and full service history.

It's a shame the seller couldn't be more honest but at least you have it now and 79k is silly mileage, can't be many of those left.

Stealth is the perfect place for it too!

Could you do the gasket change yourself? It's really not too difficult - the fiddliest bit is timing up the chains but there's plenty of guidance here for that. Parts wont cost more than 500

Unfortunately the cylinder head is knackered and some cylinders had water in them and requires a rebore to sort this so I’m told :( that the big part of the cost.

Ouch, that's a big bill when you haven't even driven 10 yards yet!

 

Trying to be positive, at least you'll have a low mileage, engine rebuilt example in an awesome colour at the end of it.

Yeh true that’s what I keep trying to tell myself, kicking myself I didn’t buy N100VSR for £8000 when on PistonHeads as will still want Leather, VDO gauges and a VSR manifold

Leather recaros are on eBay now but the price is going to sting!

keep an eye out for some 2.8VR6 engines - these can be rebored to 2.9 so if your pistons and rings are ok, it'll be much more cost effective and you'll have a well sorted engine. Just a thought..

Well I now have my heated Recaros just my VDO gauges, bbs lm wheels and vsr manifold to get!! Plus a small fortune on other parts

6k no thank you. I would find myself another engine. That is big bucks. Is that for a brand new one from VW gold plated ??

I only paid 2k for the engine on my Audi to be sorted Including the turbo.

Taking the car to an engine centre definitely worked for me. The choice is yours of course.

I know we all spend over the odds with our Corrado's, but with the purchase price and other bits that must surely outweigh its value.

A big decision for you. ... and good luck, but I would definitely shop around with my alternatives first.

Yip a lot of money this was suppose to be a cheap toy and keep thinking by the time I take into account purchase price, paint that will still need done it will certainly outweigh what it’s worth or do I sell the corrado as is and put an extra £10k to pot and buy a low mileage rs4

 

This is the problem I keep toying with what to buy, I also have a lotus Esprit S1 and if I sold that I could look at an Aston Martin Vantage but think will I keep thinking I still want to own a Corrado

I have a 57k mile VR, but my mate just bought a 911 4s, admittedly 3x the price of my Corrado, but waaayy more than 3x the car. I'll now be getting rid of my Corrado in spring next year and getting something proper :)

The Corrado is definitely 'proper' - and will probably spark more interest than the porker these days as you just don't see them, mine is sat on my mum's driveway until I get the engine back in it, but even so I've had 3 requests to buy it as it sits from passer by's... I'm fortunate enough to have a Porsche specialist best mate so get to go in everything from a Ruf CTR3's to a 1200Bhp Terminal Velocity 911 - but I don't see the Corrado as any lesser of a car. Just different

Fair enough, they're proper for what they are (and I'll definitely be keeping my G60), but bang for your buck, a 911 is a much better car; faster, more comfortable, arguably better looking .. if you have to choose between putting £15+k into a Corrado or buying a Porsche [Aston Martin in this case] then there's just no question about it in my mind.

I suppose each to their own - Porsche are ok, but do nothing for me.

 

There are several other 80s/90s cars that I like, but I’ve been a fan of the Corrado since I saw one in late 80s and nothing else that has the same appeal for me.

 

They will absolutely be a true classic in years to come and those selling now I suspect might kick themselves in 5-10 years?
