Gonna stick. Will also try AT 95 E cartridge - they seem to be legendary VFM on this unit.

Yes, got metal tapes. Loads on eBay, but prices becoming high as they are now sought after as collector's items, rather than for actual use. The great TDK-SA is not made any more. Fortunately, I bought loads over the last couple of years before that happened. If you see them buy them and stash them away - tape heads love them!

Thanks, Supercharged - never giving up on my analogue. Great to see young people getting hooked on vinyl! I suppose with the setup I got for £400 - it would be bonkers to change to new stuff at similar or slightly higher price? I still have the 1st LP I bought in 1964. "Rolling Stones" - mono. Who'd have imagined they'd still be blowing people away after half a century. They gave themselves two years in the business. As I said to Kev, I love the 12" singles I bought in the 1980s/90s. Great idea if you love a track - having it on both sides, extended and instrumental versions.

The guy who built the deck into the wooden plinth removed the lever system that pushes the belt up the pulley to change speed. I had a TD150/2 from new in 1970(!) until a couple of years ago when this item caught my eye with better arm/cartridge. It cost £400. I can change to 45rpm but have to remove heavy platter, mat, etc. Maybe if I get all my 45rpm 12" singles onto tape (I have Nak Dragon and ZX-9 and Revox B-215) I can just forget about 45rpm and use what I have with the 33rpm?

I have Thorens TD150/2 with Linn Basik Plus arm and Ortofon cartridge - all built into handcrafted wooden plinth. 45rpm not available without hassle. Should I stick with this, or can I get a more recent setup (new/second hand) for max £500? Or is this like asking "should I trade in my TR4 for a Ford Focus? - I really do not know enough about the later stuff. Some get great reviews.

Garages / useless mechanics – That old rant

Funnily enough, though I do not normally deal with any "London" garages, my age and cynicism tells me they would be good places to be ripped off. Millions of punters/naivety/cherry-picking/the general hectic pace. However, I bought my replacement CAT-back exhaust from Tuning Werkes (Croydon) and was impressed with my very personal, professional treatment online and by telephone. What a gent! I am sure I reported my experience on here at the time. Find places and people like that - keep 'em if possible - and forget the Russian roulette you risk with others. -

Check appropriate fuses and relays. Look at fuse/relay diagram to identify the 3 or 4 (approx) that you need to check. -
Thinking of buying an MG TF 160, anyone had one ?

Two words - bad & reputation. Never mind, my lad bought a Lancia Y10 about 20 years ago. -
"Folk" got flak - just like the "dinosaurs of rock" Zep, etc. after it had been in everyone's hair and ears for a while in the 1970s. On "Rutland Weekend Television" a great BBC satyrical program then, they took the pi$$ out of it. Also, remember one line from somewhere "...all those flippin' accountants in Aran sweaters down the pub, holding their hands up to their lugs..." Personally, I like a variety of music, and everything owes some of its origin to influences from here and there. That fascinates me. Am regarding "The Sea" more as a sign of "rock" evolving and progressing, as opposed to something more folk clubby. As we can see, in those days, everything was being created at full pelt - so many ideas - so many influences (LedZep bringing in a bit of mandolin and Sandy Denny). Too many great albums coming out all at once. I am still buying ones I missed from that era, having heard recordings I had kept Old Grey WT, etc, on audio tape. These have included "Family" compilation and Modern Music by "Be Bop Deluxe". Will put up 2 links. Repeats of OGWT sometimes show them. ---------- Post added at 2:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 2:18 PM ---------- BeBopDeluxe & Family. "Best of English", by the way - don't forget 'em! Try Terminal Street. Bill Nelson great lyricist, awesome guitarist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQPqiXLaqGE - Family 1 - Absolutely charming, simple, never-dating song from band that could do rough and heavy. - Family 2 - Great electric guitar. Nice walking bass at end. Chapman's voice.................well.

Funnily enough, just played Tam Lin a couple of weeks ago - a peak of achievement in UK folk-rock. It was on a Radio 1 program of circa 1970 ("Sounds of the 70s" IIRC). I have got rid of all my reel to reel decks and tapes on eBay, and was saving items from way back that I did not want to part with forever.

A 90-minute tribute concert to her on BBC4 the other night. One of my favourite songs of all time done by the band and at least one musician who played with her. (Jerry Donahue, lead electric guitar - beautiful solo.) I heard a concert by Fotheringay - in which she was singer - on the radio in 1970. Immediately bought the album and played "The Sea" until the grooves sounded rough! The reason? - This song, the lyrics, the chords, etc. are so unique and moving. Did my head in trying to copy accoustic guitar part! Never got it. Sea level rise was never mentioned in 1970 - in fact, as the 1960s was a cold decade, a coming ice age was the popular scare story. How prophetic of her to write this haunting song. Sandy Denny died suddenly at the age of 31 IIRC. An incredible, unique talent for someone so young. Hope some of you like this track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gchJNflLoI

Does anyone else feel like rebooting their life?

"People tend to be promoted to their level of incompetence." Our regional manager - who was a barsteward and had worked in HR before he became RM - used to utter that. I have to acknowledge that it is quite a thought-provoking, amusing, saying. I think corrado_sunderland might be ready for the Mad Max world! I wanna be on his side! - Hope he's not a pussy in disguise! -

After 37 years work, including 12 years of shifts of an extremely irregular, unhealthy pattern, we have had some tough times. Mainly due to my health suffering due to the shiftwork. Some completed 40 years of that without a problem. Others are not cut out for it - I wasnt, but didnt find out until my health collapsed. I have been retired for 11 years now, (since I was 57) and latterly decided that the priorities in life for a family man are: 1 - family 2 - your own health 3 - your job One big decision I made (and it was easy) was to make it clear that I did not wish be considered for promotion after I had been working for about 27 years and had moved up two grades (I was on day work by then). My boss said I had the "intellectual ability" in the report (which was nice!) but wrote what my choice was, and I never regretted it. I could see promotion meant more management (which I hated) and felt I was content with my salary - not needing to grasp for more. Maybe even 2 should be top? Without it you may not have 3 and your family will suffer. I know your generation (and our 3 kids) are exposed to a tough world in the workplace despite having a lot more materially than we did. But, unless you are totally blind to it, you should see that material wealth counts for nowt - what we need is spiritual wealth/contentment with less. In the pic, I refer you to one of the happiest periods of my life when we were relatively poor, but as children, did not know it, and had a ball. Supermarket trollies full of jumbo bags of crisps and 3 litre bottles of pop do not seem to make kids of that age happier than us, I have observed. Good luck - and dont feel you are the only one not to have felt your life was not going the way you had hoped. There are millions of you out there, but resolute philosophising about what is most important to YOU - even if your spouse is one of those who needs a new kitchen or redecorating every couple of years for some sad reason (ignore her - be firm! - I was so lucky, there) - can get you on an even keel again. -

Yes paracetamol plus ibuprofen (for inflamation) or sudafed (congestion) are over the counter combinations that may help without going to the doc. I used to worry about the amount of self-medication my mother took - plenty of paracetamol. She is still on the go at 93, so I aint as worried about paracetamol as I used to be and I know my mountaineering/running GP takes it when he has flu. Mind you, we used to be able to buy it in bottles of 500, but it is controlled now as it CAN kill you if you exceed the dose of 2 every four hours, or whatever.

Headaches due to sinus infection are notoriously bad - I have experience! They came after the virus, runny nose stage, and were often worse than the original bug and lasted for ages - "post viral infection" If it is sinusitis, try Sudafed and Paracetamol at the recommended doses. Also facecloth dipped in hot water applied to forehead. That one comes from my grandfather who was in the trenches in WW1 and is still valid today as heat kills bacteria. If you go to the doctor with sinusitis you will have to convince them it is a bacterial infection for antibiotics. For reasons we all know, they dont like giving out antibiotics if at all possible. Two in my health centre will tell you to inhale steam, or steam with Friar's Balsam in it. I remember using that when I was a lad, as my mother had advised it. I had given up on it for 50 years as I thought it was old fashioned - Wrong - My GP recommended it recently and I bought some - 21st century fashion - over the Internet. It is a natural aromatic product - unique but pleasant aroma. Has natural antibacterial properties. Was applied to wounds, too, long ago.

Dave (what a gent!), Many thanks for plastic engine cover bolt. Iain

Remember you can get VR6 Galaxy bits from Ford. (or you used to - I bought some a few years ago when renewing cooling system.)

In our new 1975 Citroen Dyane (sorry!) under the rubber mat - souvenir from the factory - empty Gauloise packet. Fortunately no French letters.

They'll be male. If you dont want to split Ill take them all. If others want them I only need one male.
-
Thanks, Dave, It's the one that has a star shaped indent and would be male. I expect. One or two are externally visible on the top surface of the plastic cover(s).
-
Dave, Do you have one bolt for the plastic VR6 engine cover? Regards Iain (last of the big spenders)
