  1. That's OK dinkus. Just for you and the others who are disappointed at the lack of girls' pictures (not girly pictures! ), here is another - she'll probably kill me if she finds out, though.
  2. Final 2 pics - more recent - Christmas 2003. Sad git with present of Vibratechnics suspension mount from Santa is yours truly. Other pic is of my wife (right) and daughter (23). I also have sons of 32 and 29.
  3. I knew one of you devils     would do that when I had reread it dinkus! :D :D
  4. 2nd and 3rd pics were taken in about 1965, when I was 20. One, taken amid Dundee tenements, proves that Rick Astley stole our look! We never got a penny! The other taken at Warfield, nr Bracknell shows me on an alleged 3rd place Derby horse. However, as my then girlfriend's (now wife's) father, the owner, was an Irishman, and horse trader I'm not totally convinced.
  5. 1st pic is of me and my mum and dad in about 1950  (yes! 1950) We were all born in Dundee, but my father had a job in Leeds at this time. The pub was "The Vespers", Kirkstall, Leeds. Idyllic memories. I havnt been to Leeds for 50 years. Anyone know if its still there?
  6. Tekara said Absolutely everyone is diversifying these days.
  7. Firstly, to eliminate possibility of coolant from matrix, dab finger in it, taste it carefully, spit out well. What is a "polum filter"?
  8. Phil Diment said: Dead right Phil. The covers over our garden furniture  are similar and collect condensation which drips downwards - you have to remove cushions, mattresses, etc, to prevent them being soaked. I only got my Lidl cheapo as a dust cover for in the garage, though. Regards
  9. Have any of you guys removed your rare badges, e.g. "Storm" from your cars lest they get nicked? I suppose it could become a problem. Personally, I havent done it yet, but I think if I took the car out every day and parked it somewhere, say, at a workplace, I reckon I would.
  10. Despite advances in technology, common old squeaks and creaks still plague some brand new VWs, it seems. My son's Lupo GTI is having a new spoiler fitted under warranty  to eliminate about the 3rd or 4th squeak from the car. A neighbour with a new Polo has also, without having hearing about my son's troublesome car, been back to her (different)VW garage with complaints. Mostly, I believe, the noises are due to plastic/rubber/metal materials rubbing together as the cars bounce along the road. Perhaps a dip in a bath of silicon lubricant would help (may cause a problem to brakes?
  11. Chubb said Me too. Never out of the place. What about the combination spanner set (chrom/vanadium) for £1.49 or something - unbelievable.
  12. :D Today, battery started car OK after sitting without boot light bulb since about 1st November and since its last run on the road some time before that. I am now 90% convinced that the boot light circuit was responsible for draining most of the battery's power. Many thanks to dinkus and henny etc. for leading me to this solution. Obviously, I will let the forum know if the problem has not been solved for good.
  13. I think this is usually indicative of an earthing problem somewhere. Experts will probably advise you in more detail later.
  14. Prevention is better than cure. You can keep your battery trays for ever if you cover them with (thick, hard) waxoyl or similar.

    Roof strips

Andy665 said Isn't it preposterous that a piece of trim that has no mechanical/electrical function whatsoever should cost so much? This is a scandalous ripoff. VAG must be ignorant if they do not realise the illwill their policies are generating among their loyal customers. I will almost certainly soon consider ditching VW after 23 years. Honda (Civic Type R) or similar, here I come.
  16. Did someone say leaks! I have just spent about 3 days eliminating leaks in my daughter's £250 1993 Polo. Cougar said Big one! - 11 years of ownership of Polo by 2 lady drivers meant a plug of leaf mush clogged the rubber willy supposed to be draining the plenum. A sinkfull of water collected around the blower motor and poured into the car when it went on an incline. Had also rotted the blower motor resistor. Phil said Membrane in driver's door had been damaged by previous "mechanic" - fixed this one with lashings of evostik and weatherproof adhesive tape. Carpets and other trim put back today. Hope its all ok, but I once had a new Cavalier where I was unable to put the carpets down for 9 months until I found a leak above the pedals which the useless Vaux garage had failed to locate - they got some spotty youth to spray underseal into the wheel arch and said "its fixed"! After over 20 years of experience I would say the keen owner has more chance of fixing leaks than most dealerships. All you need is patience, determination, a logical way of thinking, carpets out for as long as it takes, and a hosepipe.
  17. Stevemac said I did this about a week ago as my battery goes flat enough to fail to start the car in about two weeks. I will see whether this action will allow the car to be started and will let the forum know the outcome.
  18. Thanks Nelson Wilb. Incidentally, using google to look up heater/ blower/resistor, etc, it would appear that owners of nearly every car and truck under the sun seem to be prone to this problem of heaters running on max speed only. Clearly, the technology needs improving. Ford Mondeos and BMWs seem bad for it.
  19. My daughter's 93 Polo's heater blower only worked on high speed (3) when we got it. I found that the drain pipe from the plenum was totally blocked with leaf mush and that a leak in the car was caused by water filling the plenum where the blower sits, and coming down the heater assembly into the car. Based on what I have read here and Haynes I attempted a repair today. Thermal fuse was tested and was sound. However WINDING of series resistor was green with corrosion and broken in several places. I replaced broken sections of windings which appears not to be copper (anyone know what it is?) with copper wire, superglued and soldered alll in place and to my astonishment blower works on 3 speeds. I am still worried, though. 1 - Will the wires overheat and fail? 2 - Can you buy proper resistor wire at Maplins - it seems to be about 0.7mm diameter - I suppose this may be crucial? 3 - How important is the length, diameter and type of metal in the winding (wish Id read more electricity in school physics). 4 - If the thing works fine, should I just leave it and forget about it or will a fuse be blown somewhere or could a fire start? Hope some of you clever electronic guys can help. Car cost me £300 - I do not want to have to buy a complete new blower unit from VAG!
  20. I have heard that Advantage VW in east Stirling (just off A905) gives good customer service. Can any of you guys in central Scotland confirm?
  21. Well done Dave. VAG will not be commissioning a statue of you but we might! Are Corrado handles the same throughout the years? I had a new handle fitted recently (>£100!) but would still buy one or two of your kits if they will fit the 1995 VR6. Regards Iain

    Heater matrix

Be careful tightening in/out coolant hoses onto matrix as its pipes are plastic. My garage man broke mine. Matrix was old, though, plastic will not be as brittle on new matrix but, obviously, still worth being cautious.
  24. Shrewd and honest lady. I agree with her, except about the gear change. Maybe yours is not set right, Louie, or is it not as good as the VR6's? I had rear parking sensors fitted to my C as the rearward visibility is the worst of any car I have owned since Manta nearly 30 years ago. I have had less-exciting ordinary saloons/hatchbacks since then, but at least good driver visibility is designed into them as a priority. The C does have its good points, though!
  25. Sounds even slower when the battery is flat after a fortnight of inactivity by the car.
