  1. That particular race wasn't staged by the way, there was an article in a recent vw mag about a MK4 or MK5 diesel Golf that was competing in the same 24 hr race and the article commented, in particular, about how they had "even beaten the Top-Gear team who were competing in a diesel BMW saloon".

  2. Sorry it's not entirely car related, but it is in a way.......

But just to add to the whole interview theme, I had my first interview in over 6 months today (have applied for loads but never even got acknowledgement....). It was pretty daunting, but the position will be a technical role for which I am reasonable well-versed in but would still have to do a training programme of 2 months (in Houston, Texas I might add) just to get started, IF I got offered the position. The starting salary is NOT great, however, the oppurtunities for the future if I got offered the postion and got the job would be limiled only by my own abilities, drive and desire for success. The potential for high earnings within 1-2 yrears are great and the role would involve working for one of the most important and biggest economically / market share in the industry, worldwide.

I had prepared reasonably well I thought, having learned a bit about the company, what the role involves and what would be expected of me etc. I answered the questions well, I hope, and asked pertinent ones too. I also had to sit a MATHS test (which is standard practice for the role apparently, however, I was not informed of this prior to attending the interview), which I am glad that I passed (not like 2+2 = 4 questions I might add, but things you actually had to manipulate and work out etc.), even though the pass mark was 80% !

I was also told that, if I was succesful I would hear by the end of next week, but probably sooner. I was also told that the actual training, if I was to get offered the job and accept it / have references accepted / pass medical and screens etc., starts on the 21st January 2008 ! Also, that there is only 5 trainee positions, possibly 6 available, and that there was over 140 applicants for the positions and 25 interviewed........!

After those last details I got told, I'm not sure how I feel now after all this today, but here's hoping, as I really need some good luck in my life at the moment....then I might actually be able to get the rado finished and possibly sold on after a while and trade up to something else, however, I will still always have my B19 VWC registration on retention when I get another rado in the future, should I decide to sell !

Hope you two both also get offered /accept the jobs etc guys,

    Cheers

  3. They are nice cars man, that one was registered originally up my way here in Aberdeen city / shire area from the registration. Hope the factory recall Nikasil issue has been done though ? My mate had one in blue with grey leather interior before he got his e36 M3 (he's had a Boxster 3.2 and now has a new 350z now). Twas a nice motor, good luck with it :)

  4. I was actually referring to too hot's post, H8 RRA, so cool the jets :?

I did know about the shipping cost, just wasn't prepared for import duty AND vat AND admin fee, that's all........and it was down to the seller to put down the correct import code as he is a business, so I relied on him to get things right.

  5. Wrong, I got stung on a set of used RECARO subframes I have just shipped over from the states, having won them on eBay. Won them for a respectable price, but the shipping cost was stupid (£80) and had to pay VAT on top of import duty which sucks big-time.

Shouldn't have had to pay VAT either as was under the impression that VAT is not chargeable on USED car-parts ? So what was a reasonable price paid for the subframes, turned out to cost another £160 in shipping and charges, which is more than double I paid for just the subframes alone........

Also got charged £12 admin fee just for the priveledge of Parcelforce passing on the Customs charges to me...........

  6. They do look better than standard Cupra's, and as mentioned previously have the better brakes, seats and suspension as standard, but is this worth the extra £1500-£2000 premium these models seem to command over the Cupra model ? I have seen 2002-2003 Cupra's with 40-60k miles and the optional heated, leather electric seats for around £5000-£6000 (trade). Cupra R's the same age /mileage are going for around £7k.

  7. Cool, cheers for that, I've heard figures of around 250BHP with these mods fitted, so your 242BHP is in the right ball-park. Your right as well, have heard stage 1 remap good for 210-220BHP, but a turbo-back exhaust can add up to 20BHP extra alone !

Once my rado is finished next year, I will be looking for a change, so am considering one of these, a MK4 1.8T / GTTDi 130/150PD or a EP3 Civic Type R. They are all around the same price for 2002/2003 reg (with leather / Recaros in the Cupra / MK4), with the Seat being a bit cheaper to source, so trying to get as much info as possible, before setting heart on what I decide to buy next. The optional heated electric leather seats in the Cupra (if you can find one with them) are really nice too !

That said, I have seen early 210BHP Cupra R's for around £6000-£7000 and this would be my top limit for my next car, but not sure the R's are worth the extra wedge, just for the 30BHP, slightly better seats, brakes and suspension.

  8. to be honest, I don't think it would be a good idea if I opened the ballasts, as this could make them prone to letting in water etc in the future and would void any warranty I would imagine. However, here is a pic of the kit, including the ballasts I purchased on eBay from the same seller a few weeks ago.

  9. bcstudent, what did you spend £1500 on mate, surely a remap is only about £400-£500 ? How was the car fter the remap and what else did you spend on to improve the car ?

Just interested, as have always liked these, but not sure if I could justify spending the extra to get a Cupra R over a standard cupra. I would be tempted to upgrade brakes, suspension and a remap+exhaust for about £1500 on top of the £4000-£4500 of a standard cupra.

  10. When new reg goes on next week hopefully........yep B19 VWC is going on retention for the moment.........will be getting shortened plate for front and either keep it in same location or try and fix using some brackets to elsewhere on the bumper. The wheels do look really good though and yes will look much better when coilovers are on and car settles down on them.

I can't really leave the plate in the middle as that would defeat the purpose of having the bumper cut-out and covered by colour-coded mesh which serves to feed cold air directly into the large FMIC.

  11. So I take it if I unplug the plug / connector at the header tank and bridge the plug/connector with some wire to see if it stops the flashing, and if it does this will tell me that the expansion tank needs replacing, assuming coolant level is good (would tell me that collant level sensor is faulty) ?

If this doesn't work, I could replace the coolant temperature sensor and actual sender itself to see if this fixes the problem ?

  12. So the yellow temp sensor is the coolant temperature sensor and is on the thermostat housing.....uh where is the thermostat located and is it in the same place on G60's as it is on VR6's ?? Therefore this would mean that the sensor inside the coolant header tank is the coolant level sensor, correct or Jim, as you said is there no sensor inside the expansion tank at all?? Is there a sensor as well where the connector plugs into the expansion / header tank or is this just a connector alone ? When should the fan come on (at what temp I guess) and how long should it stay on for ?

Sorry for al lthe questions, just want to get this sorted and cover all possiblities.

So at least I should get a new expansion tank from VAG dealer and replace it (not too exp I think), old one really dirty as well so could do with being replaced anyways, and get the coolant system flushed and new G12/13 coolant put in to the correct mix to see if doing these cheaper thinngs solve the problem first ?
