Sadly my time with my VR6 has been cut short  My first car, my first performance motor. Test driven a few cars today and none even come close to the VR6. As you might detect im a little sad at this moment. I'll explain the sad tail. 4 weeks ago i bought what i though to be a quality VR6, checked it thoroughly, even had a mechanic look over it. All was good, paper work was in order, price was right, 6 month warranty. Car had a few little niggles, but no more than i read about here. Paid up drove home, huge grin on my face. Later that day the problems started, nasty juddery grinding sound came from the car when pulling away around 10-30mph. Felt a little uneasy over this. Contacted the specialist trader i bought it from. Took it back the following weekend. After a day there they discovered the fault was coming from the rear left brake, cant remember what it was call but a slated cylindrical piece from behind the brake disk that the ABS sensor used was bent out of shape. Replaced the part, all was sorted. Later in the next week, the exhaust started to blow, damn i knew the exhaust had been welded around the seal to the mid box, but didn't expect it to go so soon. Little gum gun and problem temporally sorted. Out at the weekend went shopping, came to leave, click, click. Started motor have seized, luckily had a friend with me, bump started and all was well. After that could start it up no probs. Few days later, loud electrical whine from the rear end, fuel pump I thought. Again that uneasy feeling came back. Decided it was time to get someone to look over it, got in touch with an old school friend who's set up a small garage specialising in VAG. Up on the ramp, looked over it, said it was in good condition. Quoted me for a new exhaust and few other bits, few heat shields were loose and the guard over the Cat needed a little welding to secure it back. Took the paperwork with me, he looked over it said it all looked good. Day later i get the warranty paper work through in the post, read it over turns out to be pretty useless but none the less something to fall back on. One clause in it, car need to be service as per service history and manufactures guidelines. Got the service book out, flicked through to check when it was due 126.6k. For some reason I read the whole book, on one page I found a reg number, wasn't for my car. Slightly shocked i took the book out to the car and compared VIN details. Didn't match, feeling slightly worried look at the book carefully, and notice nearly all the dates had been altered very well i might add. Panic was the best way to describe it. Called the specialist up, asked what was going on with this, said can you get my service book back. They a little shocked floundered on the phone, after a quick discussion i was offered compensation or money back. Tough call really, had fallen for the car, stamped down hard 2k comp, rather stunned wouldn't do that 1.5k best offer. Then i was informed the company was closing down. Had that sinking feeling so out of shock i said id take a refund. After work i drove the car back, uneasy about what id find when i got there. None the less my last 40 miles with the car were the most enjoyable ive had, you'd have never known there was anything in the slightest wrong with it. Got there and was nearly tempted after such an exhilarating drive to take the comp and leave it at that. The sensible side took over and handed the car back. My 4 week rollercoaster ride through Corrado ownership has come to an abrupt end. Guess im lucky, will have to be extra careful in the future. Feel quite a fool after that, something i should have spotted had i taken the time to look carefully. Now im a little lost, do i try my hand again with a Corrado, or move onto something else.

Anyone know where and how to go about getting extra / replacement alarm remotes from for a Sigma system. Car i got only has one remote and its a little tatty, could do with a spare Cheers

Quick question, was unblocking the drain in the rubber seal around the fuel filler. I took the seal out cleaned it up, found a ton of dirt and gunk behind it, cleaned that out. I found a brown cable thats connector has rusted off, it seems to have been connected to the neck of the filler inlet. Whats this cable for ? is it an earth ? should i be concerned that its rusted off ?

Ive used it twice and found it be really good. Cant get it where i live, only pick a tank up when passing through Basingstoke. Personally im not sure about Opitmax car seems a little stodgy when using it. Having said that ive used there Diesel too in the other car, and that too makes the car perform rather poorly. Makes me wonder if the garages storage isnt up to scratch. Sadly no other garages selling quality juice round my part of the world.

How could you tell if its the tranction control. I wasnt aware my VR6 had it, shows im a newb if thats the case. If the wheels are hot after a short period of driving, whats a likely cause ? is it just rubbing brakes or is there something more sinister waiting to empty my wallet. UPDATE:  wheels are warm after a 5mile curise without a great deal of braking

Wondering if anyone might be able to shed a little light on what seems a rather major problem. My Corrado has starting making this really nasty grinding juddery sound when pulling away from a cold start (Left to stand for more than an hour). It only happens when the car is going in a straight line, then this juddering grinding sound comes from the front end. Only happens at low speed 15-30mph sometimes it just a noise and you drive through it. Other times there is a real resistance and the car feels like its braking with a little lurch thrown in for fun. Either way all you can do is keep going, its made me really wary of the car, which sadly is spoiling my fun. Further to this the ABS is on the blink, at start light comes on then goes out as you fire her up. At any point during driving, whether it be braking or cruising the ABS light comes back on randomly. The garage i bought it from are going to diagnose the this and sort it. Can anyone give me any suggestions as to what might cause the juddering grinding sound, or is it that the dodgy ABS is fouling things up. Im inclined at the moment to take the wheels off and change the pads.

Thanks for that, is it easy to get in and change the blub.

Quick question regarding ABS. When you start the car, the usual dash lights flick on, oil and such. Is the ABS light meant to flick on when starting up too ? Reason i ask is ive come from the Vauxhall and Audi stable and the ABS light flicks on then off as you start. One on my Corrado doesnt come at all, wonder if this is normal

Hi all Yet again i wish to ask for help. One day ill beable to give back Anyway to save me a lot of hassle can any one explain how to fix the folding seat mechanism. No ideas what happened, but the release handle on the side is really floppy and only operates the catch nearest the door. The other catch near the centre console has a rather loose wire, its got about an extra 1-2 inches of slack in it. Not knowing about the internal workings of the seat im guessing its popped off a track or something. Could you possible explain how to get into the seat and if at all possible take a guess at whats wrong. Thanks

Just picked up my lovely 93 Corrado VR6 today. Really pleased with it just a few things im having problems with. Sadly one thing missing from the car is an owners manual which im in the process of getting hold of. Till then i have no answers, these i believe could be answered if i had one. 1. How do you manually raise and lower the spoiler ? 2. What on earth is option 1 maybe 2 on the MFA has a little Clock icon ? These other things more technical 1. Air vents in dash dont seem to produce much in the way of air when set to the main vents. What wrong. All other seem to work feet, and de-misster settings. Rather bad on these summers days. Fan works on all 4 settings just no air on that seting 2. Passengers folding seat handle doesnt work, just loose and floppy, after closer inspection it is only operating one of the catches. The catch closest to the centre console wire is loose. Any ideas how to repair or get into the seat to sort it. 3. The dread sunroof problem. Opened it and played around with it when i test drove it, again play some more today, on the last attempt it struggled to close. Leaving it for a second and starting the engine it seemed to manage to close. Moves very slowly sounds tired. Any suggestions, or just leave alone. 4. Finally how do you get at the rear speakers. They dont seem to be working so i wanted to check them out. 5. Is this a trait or fault, i get very poor radio reception, bugged the hell out of me today, got probably a crappy stereo a Sony jobby, dont now the model off hand. Loose signal really easily Thanks in advance

Thanks for the quick reply, few further things. How are the rear badges attached, are they stuck on or are they clipped on ?. Are they easy ish to remove without paint damage? Could i get a contact number for GPC, are they proper VW badges or replicas

Wasnt sure where best to post this, Anyone know where i would be able to buy new Corrado and VR6 badges for front and rear in chrome (shinny plastic). Cheers

Have I set an official record ... for the most written-off ?

Damn thats a real shame, can get the insurers to re-classify it if you put it in for an MOT and it passes. Thats probably of no real use to you. -
Looking for some fast advice on headunits. Just bought a car from a specialist said they would fit a stereo for me, didnt like the units on offer. Said i could choose my own for a little extra. So looking in the £150-£250 bracket looking for good EQ control, must at least have a black edge if not entire unit. Subwoofer control if they have any, good sound. Thats about it, just looking to save hassle for later, will uprate speakers and add sub soon if they dont already throw that in too. Thanks in Advance

Looking for a little advice regarding Elephant Insurance. Anyone had any dealings with them ? are they a reasonable company to go with ? Reason i ask is they seem to be the cheapest for myself with the interest in buying a Corrado VR6. Weird goings on with there online quote system, my default cost comes in about £1800 comp. If i add my mother as a named driving the price drops to a surprising low £1296. Surely thats not right. Anyway opinions if you please on any dealings you may have had with them. Cheers

Cheers fella's will make a proper check list to take with me

Hi All Yet another advice post probably to add to the hundreds before. After careful consideration ive decided to buy a Corrado VR6, im looking for info regarding purchasing and running one. Seen one locally with 119k on the clock M reg, recently had the timing chain done (dont know exact details) Full VAG history. Looks mint inside and out, havent taken it for a drive yet, and need to look at it more carefully. What should i keep an eye out for before buying, also are there any common faults that might show up in the near future based on its age and mileage. Mileage is a little more than i had thought of buying, generally how far should the car/engine go before major costs are involved. I am speaking in general terms as i dont know the exact history of the vehicle as yet. I have looked over the buyers guide but just wondered if other things tend to pop up. Thanks in advance for bearing with a complete Corrado dunce

Thanks again guys, been a big help so far. Just need to read up on common faults, and go searching for one. Oh and of course how could i forget  hand over my wallet to the insurers.

Didnt realise the 2.0 8v was in a different insurance group, quick quotes online i did seemed to show any difference in price compared to the 16v. Will call some insurers and see what turns up. Sorry to sound dumb but why are the 8v more reliable ? Could understand if they havent been trashed but is there any other reasons

Thanks for the advice so far, Dr Mat I wasnt refering the purchase of a Corrado to be a money making investment, mearly a personal one. I hadnt even thought of making money, just want a nice car, and something uncommon. Looking at what you've all said its probably best going with the 2.0. I have a further question just regarding buying a Corrado. Is there a certain level of millage i should avoid ?. Normally id walk away from a car if its done over a 100k

Hi All New to the forum, looks like a great place and a wealth of info and advice. Glad i found it. Im looking for some advice on buying a Corrado, this would be my first car. Ive taken a look at the buyers guide and its got some good points to look out for. Basically im looking for opinions as to which Corrado is going to be the best buy. The wild child in me says G60 but insurance is fair too steep. Reasonable im considering a 16v either 1.8 or 2.0. Ive had trouble finding details on the net as to performance and such, results see to be conflicting. Which of the two is going to give the the biggest smile factor?. Out of the two is there any real running cost difference?. Finally are Corrados on the whole a reliable car, or do they require a good amount of TLC ? Just looking for a fun every day car that i can tinker with, but wont require my weekends to be taken up with maintenance Thanks in advance
